Today, I want to introduce you to a charming small town near Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital, that's incredibly easy to reach by bus:
a day trip itinerary for Kamnik.
While it might not be as famous a tourist spot as Bled or Piran, Kamnik offers a unique blend of stunning Alpine views stretching along the ridges and the serene charm of medieval alleyways, all in one unforgettable experience.

1. Introduction and History of Kamnik
Kamnik stands as
one of Slovenia's oldest towns, boasting a rich history that stretches back to the 11th century, when it was first documented.
During the Middle Ages, under the rule of the Andechs counts from Bavaria, Kamnik flourished as a vibrant commercial hub and a crucial trading post connecting Puglia with Central Europe.
Its prominence was so significant that it even had its own mint for coining money!
Traces of its thriving craftsmanship, medieval defensive walls, and castle ruins are beautifully preserved throughout the old town, making it a charming small city that feels like an open-air historical museum.

You can travel comfortably in one go by taking an Arriva bus to Kamnik from the main bus terminal, conveniently located right in front of Ljubljana Central Station.
Unlike the train station, the Arriva bus terminal is directly adjacent to the entrance of Kamnik's old town, which is a huge advantage – you can start your exploration as soon as you step off the bus!
Checking the schedule and booking your tickets in advance on the official Arriva website will make your trip much more convenient.
Buses run frequently.

Mali Grad Castle Ruins
Mali Grad
Walk for about 10 minutes towards the old town, and you'll discover Mali Grad, a small hill rising prominently in the center of the village.
Meaning 'Small Castle,' this site was once home to a medieval castle.
Today, parts of the castle walls and a unique two-story Romanesque chapel remain.
Unfortunately, the chapel's interior was not accessible.
Since the hill isn't too steep,
it's perfect for a light, leisurely stroll to the top.
From the summit, you'll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of Kamnik's Old Town, with its charming clusters of red roofs,
and the majestic Kamnik-Savinja Alps rising grandly behind it,
all in one glorious glance.
It's an incredibly refreshing viewpoint that will truly open up your heart, so I highly recommend making the climb!

After descending from Mali Grad,
we took a lovely stroll along
Šutna Street, the vibrant heart of the Old Town.
This historic street, the oldest in Kamnik,
is beautifully lined on both sides with charming, pastel-toned
medieval buildings that stretch out before you.
As this was historically where artisans lived and worked,
each building holds its own unique crest or
distinctive signboard, making it a delightful treasure hunt to explore the alleyways!

Zaprice Castle
Zaprice Castle
If your schedule allows,
definitely make your way to Zaprice Castle,
nestled on the hill opposite the Old Town. It was hands-down our favorite spot!
This Baroque-style castle, built in the 16th century,
now functions as a museum dedicated to showcasing Kamnik's rich history and traditional pastoral culture.
We visited on a Sunday and unfortunately couldn't go inside the museum,
but we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the beautifully kept gardens surrounding the castle and discovering traditional Slovenian pastoral houses.
Being on high ground, this spot also offers truly stunning views looking out towards Mali Grad.
We even spread out a mat here
and sat for a long time, just relaxing and soaking in the atmosphere.

4. Recommended Nearby Destinations
We had really hoped to visit Velika Planina, one of Kamnik's absolute highlights, during our trip,
but regrettably, our time was too short, and we had to turn back.
Velika Planina is
Europe's largest high-altitude pasture, boasting a vast expanse of idyllic traditional wooden huts,
and it's a place where you can truly immerse yourself in serene nature, watching cows graze peacefully against the stunning backdrop of the Alps' eternal snows.
If your itinerary permits,
I highly recommend you don't miss out on experiencing it for yourselves!

Kamnik was
a place where I could truly feel Slovenia's unique warmth and peaceful local atmosphere,
away from the grandeur of big cities
or the hustle and bustle of crowded tourist destinations.
If you're staying in Ljubljana
and looking for a day trip to a nearby small town
that's a bit off the beaten path and full of charm,
I truly recommend a visit to Kamnik!

A one-way Arriva bus ticket from Ljubljana to Kamnik costs €3.50 on weekdays and €2.60 on weekends for adults purchasing online. The bus journey takes approximately 1 hour.
At Mali Grad, you can see parts of the medieval city walls and a unique two-story Romanesque chapel. The interior of the chapel was not accessible.
Zaprice Castle currently serves as a museum showcasing Kamnik's history and traditional pastoral culture. The author visited on a Sunday and was unable to enter the museum.
