Today, I want to introduce a charming and easily accessible
hidden gem located just a short bus ride away
from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.
Get ready for the perfect Kamnik Day Trip Itinerary!
While it might not be as famous as Lake Bled or Piran,
it’s a place where you can experience majestic Alpine views
stretching along the horizon, combined with the peaceful, quiet charm
of medieval alleys all in one go.

1. Introduction & History of Kamnik
Kamnik is
one of the oldest towns in Slovenia,
boasting a rich history that was first recorded
in written documents back in the 11th century.
During the Middle Ages, under the rule of the
Bavarian Counts of Andechs,
it flourished as a vital trading hub connecting
the Adriatic region with Central Europe,
growing into a highly prosperous commercial center.
It was once so powerful and influential
that it even operated its own coin mint!
Traces of its once-thriving craftsmanship,
along with defensive medieval walls and castle ruins,
remain beautifully preserved throughout the Old Town,
making this lovely town feel like an open-air historical museum.

If you hop on the direct Arriva bus bound for Kamnik
from the main bus terminal located right in front
of Ljubljana Central Station,
you'll enjoy a seamless and comfortable journey.
Unlike the train station, the Arriva bus stop
is located right at the entrance
of Kamnik's Old Town.
This means you can start exploring the moment you step off,
which is a massive advantage!
Checking the schedule and booking your tickets in advance
on the official Arriva website
will make your trip go much smoother.
Buses run quite frequently.
3. Must-Visit Spots
1️⃣
Mali Grad Castle Ruins
Mali Grad
After walking for about 10 minutes toward the Old Town,
you'll find a small hill rising right in the center of town:
the historic site of Mali Grad.
Translating to "Little Castle,"
this is the spot where a medieval castle once stood.
Today, only parts of the old defensive walls
and a unique, two-story Romanesque
chapel remain standing.
The interior of the chapel was closed to visitors when I went.
The hill isn’t very steep,
making it perfect for a light, leisurely stroll.
Once you stand at the very top,
Kamnik's Old Town with its cluster of red roofs
and the majestic
Kamnik-Savinja Alps standing behind it
stretch out before your eyes in a single glance.
It's a fantastic, refreshing viewpoint,
so I highly recommend going up.

Old Town
Šutna
After heading down from Mali Grad,
we walked down
Šutna Street, the heart of the Old Town.
As the oldest street in Kamnik,
it's lined with charming, pastel-toned
medieval buildings stretching out on both sides.
Since it was once a place where craftsmen lived,
each building hides its own unique coat of arms
or quirky signs,
making it so much fun to explore the alleyways.

Zaprice Castle
Zaprice Castle
If you have some extra time,
make sure to visit Zaprice Castle,
perched on the hill on the opposite side of the Old Town.
It was actually our favorite spot.
Built in the 16th century in a Baroque style,
it now serves as a museum highlighting
the history of Kamnik and its traditional herding culture.
We visited on a Sunday,
so we couldn't go inside the museum,
but we loved exploring the beautifully manicured gardens
and the traditional, rustic Slovenian
wooden cottages surrounding the castle.
Since it's on high ground,
the view looking back towards Mali Grad is absolutely stunning.
We laid out a picnic blanket here
and just relaxed for a long time.

We really wanted to visit
Velika Planina, one of the main highlights of Kamnik,
during our trip,
but unfortunately, we ran out of time
and had to head back.

Velika Planina is
one of Europe's largest high-altitude alpine pastures,
where pastoral wooden cottages stretch as far as the eye can see.
Against the backdrop of the eternal snows of the Alps,
it's a place where you can fully soak in the peaceful nature
while watching cows graze in the fields.
If your schedule allows,
I highly recommend making sure to visit!

5. Wrapping Up
For us, Kamnik was
a place where we could fully embrace
the warm, peaceful local vibes of Slovenia,
away from the grandeur of big cities
and the crowded bustle of typical tourist traps.
If you're staying in Ljubljana
and want to experience a unique, laid-back
day trip to a charming nearby town,
I highly recommend visiting Kamnik!
