Half a Day at Hase Station: A Memoir

Hopping on the retro green 'Enoden' train,
I embarked on a Kamakura, Tokyo adventure, freely exploring
by stopping at each charming station along the way.
My absolute favorite spot turned out to be <Hase Station>!
With its many alleys offering stunning ocean views,
quaint cafes tucked away in every charming corner,
and iconic spots like Kotoku-in and Hasedera,
I'm excited to share the half-day itinerary I absolutely adored!

1. Morning at Kamakura's Hase Station
While all the neighborhoods in Kamakura, like Enoshima and Kamakurakokomae,
are undeniably captivating, Hase Station truly captured my heart as my top favorite.
That's why I chose to spend an unforgettable night right in Hase Station.
Even my accommodation had such a wonderful, soulful vibe, don't you think?
The very first place I stopped by was an iconic spot
featured in the Netflix show <Isa-tong> – remember that poignant scene
where characters part ways with the train between them? It's a hair salon
right in front of Hase Station! It tends to get quite busy during the day,
so I made sure to visit early in the morning to capture some perfect souvenir shots.
Next, I embraced the tranquil morning by the sea,
enjoying a refreshing stroll along the coastline, with the gentle sea breeze as my companion.
I stumbled upon a charming, tiny neighborhood bakery.
And let me tell you, their classic breads are absolutely divine!
There weren't any seats inside, so I grabbed a freshly baked pastry
and savored it while gazing at the ocean – what an absolutely blissful memory!
Hase Station is also home to numerous serene temples,
nestled charmingly along the Enoden train lines. Since I'd enjoyed a light breakfast,
it was the perfect time to explore these captivating sights before the day got too warm!
2. Must-Visit Places & Fun Things to Do at Hase Station
The primary attractions that draw visitors to Hase Station
are the magnificent Hasedera Temple and Kotoku-in Temple.
And the best part? Both are incredibly convenient to explore,
as they're just a pleasant stroll away from Hase Station!
✔️ Hasedera Temple is renowned for its immaculately kept, beautiful gardens,
creating a tranquil and exquisite walking path! It's especially famous as a hydrangea spot,
plus it offers breathtaking ocean views from its temple grounds.
✔️ Following that, Kotoku-in Temple, which I'll introduce next,
is a truly iconic temple, immediately recognizable thanks to its awe-inspiring Great Buddha statue!

Still, compared to other tourist attractions in Japan,
at just 300 yen or 400 yen,
it's so affordable you can visit both!
Allow about 30 minutes for each, and you'll have plenty of time!
This is Kotoku-in.
Since Hasedera Temple is closer to Hase Station,
I went Hase Station -> Hasedera Temple -> Kotoku-in,
but it's perfectly fine to swap the order of the two.
After seeing this magnificent Great Buddha,
I sat in the shade for a bit, and that was the end of this attraction.
Oh, and I lit an incense stick too!

Lastly, a must-visit spot near Hase Station is
the Music Box Museum.
If you've been to Sapporo, you're probably familiar with the Otaru Music Box Museum, but you might be a little disappointed if you expect the same here.
It's a cozy space where you can enjoy the charming Japanese music box aesthetic on a smaller scale.
It's just a 2-minute walk from Hasedera Temple, so a quick stop is all you need.
Hasedera Temple: 30 minutes
Music Box Museum: 10 minutes
Kotoku-in: 30 minutes
That's how long the sightseeing took.
3. Kamakura Hase is a Cafe Paradise
If I had stayed in Hase Station for about 2 nights and 3 days,
I would have wanted to explore three cafes a day, that's how many unique cafes there were on every alley!
After touring the sights,
I rounded off my half-day at Hase Station by enjoying some coffee and relaxation.
This cafe was converted from an old Japanese traditional house.
If you're a cafe lover, you might even want to visit two cafes here.
This was the most delicious drip coffee I had
throughout my entire Tokyo and Kamakura trip.
I think I enjoyed about two hours of quiet time, reading a book and writing in my diary.
If you're heading to Kamakura during your trip to Tokyo,
please don't just snap a "Slam Dunk" photo and move on!
Make sure to ride the Enoden, get off at each station, and truly soak in the charm of this seaside town!!!🌊

The admission fee for adults at Hasedera Temple is 400 yen, and it operates from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Kotoku-in Temple costs 300 yen for adults and operates from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, but from October to March, it closes at 5:00 PM.
Hasedera Temple takes approximately 30 minutes, the Music Box Museum about 10 minutes, and Kotoku-in Temple about 30 minutes. You can expect to spend a total of about 1 hour and 10 minutes visiting these three locations combined.
The filming location for the scene in Netflix's 'Isatong' where the characters parted ways with a train between them is a hair salon directly in front of Hase Station. Since it gets crowded during the day, it's recommended to visit early in the morning to take a commemorative photo.
A local bakery near Hase Station doesn't have seating, but you can buy freshly baked bread and enjoy it while watching the sea. It's especially noted that their basic bread is particularly delicious.
