Planning a Tokyo getaway in 2026? If you venture to the charming coastal towns of Kamakura and Enoshima, just an hour's ride from the bustling capital, there's one dish you absolutely cannot miss.
It's called Shirasu-don (しらす丼), a delightful rice bowl topped with fresh whitebait, also known as sardine fry.

Imagine a steaming bowl of rice, generously topped with delicate whitebait, often accompanied by other fresh sashimi. It's typically served with a side of soy sauce, grated ginger, and a dollop of wasabi – a quintessential Japanese seafood rice bowl experience.

Kamakura and Enoshima are just about an hour's journey from Tokyo, making them perfect for a day trip or an overnight escape. For ultimate convenience, grab a "Kamakura Free Pass." This pass covers your round-trip journey from Tokyo and offers unlimited rides on the scenic Enoden train for the entire day, making it an incredibly popular choice for independent travelers exploring Tokyo's surroundings.

Strolling through the charming alleys near Katase Enoshima Beach, we noticed a lively mix of locals and tourists, just like us. It was quite interesting to see a good number of Western visitors enjoying the atmosphere!
Given that Shirasu-don is *the* must-eat dish here, we made sure to enjoy it for both lunch and dinner during our Tokyo free travel adventure in Enoshima.

For our lunchtime Shirasu-don fix, we headed to "WATATSUMI," a restaurant boasting lovely Enoshima beach views.

It was located a little off the main street of Enoshima, offering a more relaxed vibe. The menu featured a wide variety of dishes beyond just Shirasu-don, but naturally, that was our main target!
We opted for the restaurant's signature Shirasu-don, which came with a mix of various sashimi, and a Flounder Shirasu-don. To complete our meal, we ordered some Akaboshi beer and a local Enoshima side dish.

For first-timers, the sight of a mound of tiny whitebait on rice might be a little polarizing, but don't let that deter you! Once you mix it with the soy sauce, wasabi, and a touch of ginger, you'll discover a wonderfully savory and fluffy texture that's truly unique.

Unlike the salty, stir-fried anchovies you might find in some Asian cuisines, this whitebait is served lightly seasoned, making it perfect for blending with the accompanying sauces. The addition of other sashimi also provided a fantastic texture and elevated the overall flavor profile. It was absolutely delicious!

Both the beer and cider paired perfectly with our Shirasu-don, making for a truly enjoyable lunch by the sea.

And for those who aren't keen on seafood, this Shirasu-don restaurant also offered excellent alternative dishes like Butadon (pork rice bowl), ensuring everyone can find something delicious to enjoy.

After a relaxing afternoon exploring Enoshima Beach, we decided to indulge in Shirasu-don once again for dinner.

The restaurant for the evening was a quaint spot, recommended by our accommodation, a small eatery located right next to Kinokuniya Ryokan.

This place had a distinctly more local, authentic ambiance compared to our lunchtime spot. It felt like a true hidden gem!
Here, we ordered a Shirasu-don featuring horse mackerel sashimi, along with a full set meal that included assorted sashimi, tempura, and a delectable simmered splendid alfonsino (Kinmedai Nitsuke).

Even after having it for lunch, the Shirasu-don for dinner was just as satisfying and delicious. We definitely preferred the style with added sashimi, as it provided a richer flavor and texture.

The tempura and sashimi included in the set meal were also incredibly fresh and delicious. Each bite made us want another sip of beer – a perfect pairing!

While the Shirasu-don was fantastic, the real showstopper of the set meal was the "Kinmedai Nitsuke" – simmered splendid alfonsino. This fish, named for its distinctive golden eyes, was cooked in a perfectly balanced sweet and savory sauce. It was so incredibly flavorful, it truly was a "rice thief" – meaning it made us want to eat endless bowls of rice!

The area around Kamakura and Enoshima is renowned for its Shirasu because it's sourced directly from Sagami Bay. This means you'll find fresh Shirasu-don available at most restaurants throughout the region.

This dish is clean, savory, and most importantly, an authentic local delicacy you can truly savor only here. So, if you're planning a Tokyo free travel itinerary that includes Kamakura and Enoshima in 2026, I wholeheartedly recommend making Shirasu-don a priority on your foodie list!
