Beijing Travel Guide: Must-Try Restaurants,
Wangfujing's Northeast Chinese Cuisine at Jinzhangshao

Are you looking for a great Northeast Chinese restaurant
on your Beijing trip?
Besides Grandma's Home (Waipojia), Wangfujing has
many fantastic Northeast Chinese restaurants.
Today, I'll introduce you to one I visited with my parents,
Jinzhangshao (金掌勺)!

Jinzhangshao 金掌勺 (Wangfujing Branch) jīnzhǎngsháo |
Operating Hours: 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM Closed: None Location: Wangfujing Department Store (百货大楼), 6th Floor |
Jinzhangshao operates daily from 11 AM
until 10 PM.
It's a perfect spot for either lunch or dinner.

📍 Jinzhangshao is located on the 6th floor of Wangfujing Department Store.
Wangfujing Department Store (百货大楼) is famous for
its iconic clock tower!
You can take the elevator straight up to the 6th floor.

Jinzhangshao seems to have quite a wait during peak hours,
as they provide snacks
and even special events for waiting customers.
Luckily, I was able to get in
without any wait.

The interior of the restaurant was quite spacious,
and most tables seated four people.
A staff member greeted us at the entrance and guided us
to our table.

As a renowned Northeast Chinese restaurant, Jinzhangshao offers
a variety of dishes that appeal to many palates, like
the popular Guo Bao Rou (sweet and sour pork).
Beyond Guo Bao Rou, you'll find other delights such as stir-fried glass noodles with shrimp, Di San Xian (stir-fried potato, green pepper, and eggplant),
and various stir-fried meat and vegetable dishes – all perfect with rice!

Here's what I ordered:
📌 What I Ordered
(In the order they appear on the receipt in the photo above.)
Stir-fried Shredded Potatoes 29.9 CNY
Stir-fried Pork with Bell Peppers 39.9 CNY
Steamed Rice 4 CNY
Kao Leng Mian (Grilled Cold Noodles) 15 CNY
Naengmyeon (Cold Noodles) 29.9 CNY
Teacher's Beer 12 CNY
Sprite 6 CNY

Interestingly, at Jinzhangshao, as soon as you order,
they bring out an hourglass.
They have a unique policy: if your food isn't served by the time the hourglass runs out,
it's on the house!
It's a testament to their commitment to fast service,
and I found this customer-first approach truly refreshing!

First, before the other dishes came out,
beer, cider, and Kaolengmian (grilled cold noodles) arrived.
Seonsaeng Beer is so refreshing that every time I go to China,
it's the beer I always end up ordering.
I think it's the beer that pairs best with the food!

Kaolengmian, or grilled cold noodles, is exactly as it sounds:
a dish made by grilling cold noodles and adding various toppings.
It had sausage, enoki mushrooms, and onions, and
it was absolutely delicious, seasoned with Kaolengmian's unique savory sauce.
The grilled cold noodles themselves were wonderfully chewy, making it an incredibly tasty treat!

After enjoying the grilled cold noodles as an appetizer,
the other dishes started to arrive.
We had cold noodles, stir-fried pork with bell peppers, and stir-fried shredded potatoes!

The stir-fried shredded potatoes had a slightly different texture and flavor compared to Korean-style stir-fried potatoes.
Chinese-style shredded potatoes really highlight the potato's characteristic crispness,
giving it an incredible texture.

Plus, it's stir-fried in a savory sauce,
making it a total 'rice thief'!
Especially Jinjiangxiao's rice – it had no unpleasant rice smell at all,
and the grains were perfectly firm, making it truly delicious!

Next up was the stir-fried pork with bell peppers.
This dish is also famous at places like Nokcha Restaurant and Feidachu,
so I figured it would be delicious at Jinjiangxiao too, and ordered it.
It was a total success!

To keep the food warm throughout the meal,
it was served with a candle underneath,
which was great because it never got cold.

The stir-fried pork with bell peppers was savory and
had a slight kick of spice, making it perfect as a side dish for rice.
The pork itself was tender,
and had no peculiar smell, making it a dish you just couldn't stop eating!

A little tip: since it keeps simmering,
I recommend eating the bell peppers while they still have their crisp texture.

Finally, the dish I'll introduce is cold noodles.
On the surface, it looks similar to Korean Naengmyeon,
but it's topped with egg, cucumber, tomato, meat, and kimchi.

However, I'd actually recommend skipping the cold noodles at Jinjiangxiao.
The noodles weren't very springy,
and the broth was bland, so I didn't find myself reaching for it often...!
If you're looking for the taste of Korean Naengmyeon,
Honestly, you'd be pretty disappointed if you ordered it!

Jinjiangshao is conveniently located right in Wangfujing,
making it a fantastic spot to visit during your travels.
The prices are super affordable, the restaurant is clean, and the service was excellent.
The stir-fried potato shreds and stir-fried pork with bell peppers I ordered are
highly recommended! And instead of cold noodles (naengmyeon), I’d suggest pairing them with Guobarou or
trying Kaoliangmian!
So, I hope you have an absolutely delicious and amazing trip to Beijing, China!

Jinzhangshao operates daily from 11 AM to 10 PM, without any holidays. During peak hours, there might be a waiting line, so snacks and events are prepared for guests to enjoy while waiting.
The article recommends Stir-fried Shredded Potatoes (29.9 yuan), Stir-fried Pork with Green Peppers (39.9 yuan), Kao Leng Mian (15 yuan), and Guobaorou. It specifically mentioned that the Stir-fried Shredded Potatoes and Stir-fried Pork with Green Peppers pair well with rice.
