Jingshan Park Beijing 2026: Forbidden City Night View Worth It?

Jingshan Park is fantastic for seeing the entire Forbidden City,

which is why I visit every time I'm in Beijing.

However, if you're expecting a dazzling night view of the Forbidden City,

you might find it a little different from what you imagined.

I'll share my real experience from daytime until sunset,

along with the latest operating hours and entrance fees.

1. Why Visit Beijing Jingshan Park

The biggest reason to visit Jingshan Park

is, of course, the Forbidden City view.

It's located directly north of the Forbidden City,

so when you climb up to the observatory at the summit,

the sprawling roofs of the Forbidden City unfold before you.

Inside the Forbidden City itself, the scale is so immense

that it's hard to grasp its full grandeur all at once.

It was only after ascending Jingshan Park

that I truly realized 'I walked through all of that!'

The sheer size of the Forbidden City truly hit me.

If you turn your gaze in the opposite direction,

Beijing's cityscape spreads out in every direction,

offering a different experience from simply viewing the Forbidden City.

It's this expansive, open view

that draws me back every time I visit Beijing.

2. Is Jingshan Park's Night View Truly Recommended?

To get straight to the point,

if you're going there expecting a spectacular night view,

you might be a little disappointed.

That's because it's not lit up in a way

where the entire Forbidden City glows brightly.

It wasn't the 'sparkling Forbidden City night view'

I initially had in mind.

Still, as the sun went down,

the scene of the red roofs and Beijing's cityscape

slowly fading into darkness was beautiful.

More than anything, the experience itself of gazing down

at the entire Forbidden City from such an unobstructed high vantage point

is, I believe, Jingshan Park's greatest charm.

So, there's no need to specially time your visit for a late hour

solely for the night view.

I recommend going up gradually from the daytime,

first seeing the Forbidden City in daylight,

and if time allows, continuing to watch

until sunset.

3. Jingshan Park Information

Jingshan Park is located

directly opposite the Forbidden City's North Gate, Shenwu Gate.

If you've just finished exploring the Forbidden City,

it's perfect to visit right after exiting through the North Gate.

The entrance fee is 2 Yuan for adults,

and 1 Yuan for concession tickets.

Prices may vary during cultural event periods.

It was easy to purchase tickets on-site,

and when I paid with Alipay, I received a paper ticket.

As you enter, just scan the QR code on your ticket – it's that easy to get in!

The 'hike' (it's more of a gentle ascent!) takes just about 10 minutes – you'll be at the top in no time!

And on the way up, I even spotted some scenery that felt perfectly fitting for the Year of the Red Horse!

The path was clearly marked with directions like these at various points,

making it super easy to find my way around.

Jingshan Park Beijing: Operating Hours

From April 1st to October 31st,

it's open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM,

while from November 1st to March 31st,

the hours are 6:30 AM to 8:00 PM.

Last admission is always 30 minutes before closing.

I was diligently making my way up around 7:30 AM!

4. Jingshan Park Night Views: What to Expect

During seasons with longer daylight, like summer,

even if you time your visit for when the lights are supposed to come on,

the surroundings might still be quite bright,

so you might not get that immediate 'night view' vibe.

I also tried waiting for the lights to come on,

and while the crowds definitely grew, I didn't experience the dramatic change I was anticipating.

The photo on the left shows how it looked normally,

and the one on the right is what it looked like when the lights turned on (with a slightly dimmed exposure for the photo)!

Can you even tell the difference? Haha!

Plus, the lights only shine on the Shenwumen (Gate of Divine Might) side, not across the entire Forbidden City,

so, honestly, the night view is a bit… underwhelming (?).

I visited in early June, so do keep the longer daylight hours of that season in mind!

So for Jingshan Park,

instead of trying to perfectly time your visit for 'when the lights turn on',

it's actually better to head up leisurely before sunset.

Imagine seeing the entire Forbidden City from the summit,

then taking in the sweeping Beijing landscape stretching out in all directions.

If you then get a night view as a bonus when the sun sets,

you'll feel much more satisfied.

If this is your first time visiting the Forbidden City,

I highly recommend combining your visit with Jingshan Park on the same day,

after you've finished exploring the Forbidden City.

The perspective you get from inside the Forbidden City

and the panoramic view looking down from Jingshan Park are completely different,

and I personally love seeing both perspectives together.

Pro Tip!

When you descend and exit, make sure to leave through Shenwumen (the south gate of Jingshan Park).

That way, you'll be greeted with this stunning view!
