If you're looking for an authentic Shanghai restaurant where locals actually line up to eat, look no further than
Jiajia Tangbao
JIAJIATANGBAO (佳家汤包)
The flavors from my trip last year were so unforgettable that I made it a priority to visit this Shanghai favorite again in 2026.
Why is Jiajia Tangbao considered a must-visit spot near People's Square, and why did I go back? Let's dive into my honest review! ><
1. Location

📍 127 Huang He Lu
127 Huang He Lu, People's Square, Huang Pu Qu, Shang Hai Shi, China 200003
📍 佳家汤包(黄河路店)
Address (via Baidu Maps): 上海市-黄浦区-黄河路127号
(I'll paste the name and address in the comments so you can easily copy it!)
Just a heads up: based on my previous posts and other travel blogs, Google Maps doesn't always show the exact location accurately.
The location pinned in my attached map screenshot is the correct one!

Hours: Daily 07:00 AM - 08:30 PM (No break time)
Ordering & Payment: Alipay
Strollers: Must be parked outside before entering (the interior isn't very spacious)
2. Interior & Atmosphere
The restaurant boasts a clean yet traditional vibe (operating since 1986).

While the seating area isn't massive, it accommodates a decent number of people. Plus, the menu allows for quick table turnover, so the wait time usually isn't long.
(When I visited last year, there was a line, but this year around the same time, I walked right in. It likely depends on the day!)

Please note that they don't provide baby utensils or high chairs, so keep that in mind if you're traveling with little ones. :)

3. Menu
The main specialties here are dim sum (soup dumplings) and noodle dishes. I came specifically for the dumplings and the crab noodles.

Thankfully, they have an English menu! Verbal communication in English is tough, so I used a Chinese translation app for quick interactions.

Crab & Pork Soup Dumplings (蟹粉鲜肉汤包): 38 RMB
Golden Crab Sauce Noodles (黄金蟹粉拌面): 89 RMB
Vegetable & Pork Wontons (蔬菜鲜肉小馄饨): 13 RMB
Coke (可乐): 5 RMB
Since my child fell asleep, three of us (adult women) shared these three dishes. It was the perfect amount to feel comfortably full without overeating.
The total came to 145 RMB, which is roughly ~$22! Such a fantastic price.
Last time, I ordered too much dim sum and had leftovers. This time, I ordered just enough with the mindset that we could always order more, and we cleared every plate!
4. Taste Review
The first time I visited, a friend living in China recommended it. I didn't know about the crab noodles then, so I only ordered the dumplings.
But as I looked around the restaurant, I noticed every single table had a bowl of crab noodles. I only realized what I missed after finishing my meal!
So this time, ordering the crab noodles was my top priority!
The visual presentation alone built up my expectations. After just one bite, my friends and I made eye contact and started nodding with "Mmm!"s of approval.

The crab meat wasn't fishy at all. It had a rich, savory, and perfectly seasoned flavor that coated the noodles beautifully.

I already knew the soup dumplings were fantastic, and they proved once again why they're famous. The thin skins are packed with filling, and they burst with flavorful broth when you bite into them.

Just writing this and thinking about that savory broth is making my mouth water.
The wontons had a mild, comforting broth that was perfect for sipping alongside the richer dishes!

The Coke was served at room temperature, so I asked for ice, but unfortunately, they didn't have any. ㅠㅠ
My friends, who were on their first trip to China, were a little nervous about the food. However, they absolutely loved this first meal in Shanghai and couldn't stop praising it.
It's a flavor profile that easily captivates international palates! It absolutely deserves its title as one of the best restaurants in Shanghai. :)

If you want to eat proper soup dumplings in Shanghai, this is undoubtedly the spot I recommend the most.

Worried about strong spices or unfamiliar Chinese food? This local favorite is completely approachable and delicious for everyone!
It's rare to visit the same restaurant twice while traveling, right?! For me, this place is a true hidden gem that was completely worth the return trip! ><
