When you're planning a trip to Shanghai and looking for a hotel,

you probably have a checklist that looks a bit like this:

"Is there a spacious room that won't break the bank?"

"How about a safe, 5-star hotel in a prime location?"

"I hope it's popular and trusted by fellow travelers..."

Today, I'm excited to introduce a 5-star hotel in East Nanjing Road, Shanghai,

that ticks all of these boxes:

The Grand Central Hotel Shanghai is located just

one block away from East Nanjing Road.

It is immensely popular among Korean travelers,

meaning you'll see many fellow tourists staying here,

and despite being a 5-star hotel, the room rates start around ~$115,

making it an incredibly budget-friendly luxury option.

Another huge perk is the generous stay window (check-in at 2:00 PM to check-out at 12:00 PM the next day),

so you won't have to rush through your morning

on checkout day.

Now, let's dive into more details about its

prime location, budget-friendly pricing, and other great perks.

First, looking at the map above, I've marked the Grand Central Hotel

and its key surrounding attractions.

As you can see, it is practically right next to East Nanjing Road.

Walk just 15 minutes to the east, and you'll reach The Bund,

making it perfect for a breezy evening stroll to soak in those iconic night views.

Plus, People's Square Station is only a 10-minute walk to the west,

making it super convenient to hop on the metro and explore other parts of the city.

The absolute best part is definitely its proximity to East Nanjing Road.

East Nanjing Road is often compared to Seoul's Myeongdong—

it's a bustling pedestrian street packed with fantastic restaurants, cafes, and shops.

Since it's always lively and well-lit with high foot traffic,

the area is incredibly safe, even for late-night walks.

And right across the street from the hotel, there's a Lawson convenience store!

You might be surprised to find that it's not always easy to find a spot to grab

late-night snacks or a cold beer in Shanghai.

Having a convenience store right at your doorstep is a massive lifesaver!

are surprisingly affordable.

Usually, Trip.com offers the best rates for hotels in China,

but for the Grand Central Hotel Shanghai, Agoda was actually cheaper.

(In fact, I booked my stay through Agoda too!)

However, pricing can always fluctuate depending on current promotions,

so I highly recommend checking both platforms before making your final booking!

Next up, let me share my step-by-step review of my actual stay

at the Grand Central Hotel Shanghai!

The literal translation of this hotel's Chinese name is

'Shanghai Grand Hotel,'

and once you step inside, the massive and grand atmosphere

makes it easy to see why!

The lobby has a classic Western hotel vibe,

but you can definitely catch hints of traditional Chinese elegance here and there.

They offer luggage storage right near the hotel entrance.

We arrived around 12:00 PM—well before the official check-in time—

so we dropped off our bags first,

and then came back around 3:00 PM to complete our check-in.

There were about four staff members at the front desk,

so we were able to check in immediately without any waiting.

Plus, their English was excellent, making communication a breeze!

Interestingly, we spotted a couple of other Korean travelers

during check-in, which really proved just how popular

this spot is with international visitors.

While checking in, they handed us some bathroom amenities.

Since basic items like a toothbrush and toothpaste are included,

you don't really need to pack your own!

Check-in took about 5 minutes.

Just a heads up, there's a security deposit of 500 RMB (approx. $70) required,

so I highly recommend bringing a credit card along.

(Don't worry, it's fully refundable upon checkout!)

After that, we took the elevator up

to head to our assigned room.

We booked the Courtyard Room, which was the most budget-friendly option,

and were assigned to Room 803.

The room was laid out with a clear separation between the bathroom and bedroom,

and it felt incredibly spacious the moment we walked in.

The bedroom featured a massive bed, a cozy sofa, and a table.

Honestly, all the furniture felt about 1.2 times larger

than what you'd typically find in standard hotel rooms.

The bed, in particular, was so plush and cozy.

It was incredibly spacious—large enough to lie across sideways—which I absolutely loved!

Right by the sofa and table, there's a window

where you can enjoy the hotel view.

Even though it's technically a courtyard view, it felt open and airy,

and I actually found it quite lovely!

Complimentary amenities in the room include two bottles of mineral water,

along with a selection of coffee and tea.

Aside from that, the minibar is fully stocked with light snacks,

soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages.

It was pretty amusing to see Chamisul Soju among the drink options!

Just a quick reminder: everything in the minibar comes with an extra charge, so

Just keep in mind that if you consume them, the cost will be deducted from your deposit!

Other than that, there were room slippers, a wardrobe, and hangers.

It was quite unique to find an iron and an ironing board here!

If you're visiting Shanghai on business,

amenities like these would be incredibly useful.

Next up, the bathroom has a great layout where the bathtub, sink, shower room, and toilet

are all separated.

When you open the door, you'll see the bathtub and sink right in front of you, as shown in the photo.

The toilet is on the right, and the shower booth is on the left.

The bathtub was spacious enough for one person to have a relaxing soak,

and since the shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and towels were placed right by the faucet,

it was super easy to rinse off right after taking a bath.

The shower room was also very spacious—even with your arms stretched wide, there's plenty of room!

This area just had the showerhead and bath products.

They provided shampoo, conditioner, and body wash here as well,

so it was incredibly convenient not having to pack your own!

By the vanity sink, there was a hair dryer,

along with other amenities like a shower cap and a sewing kit.

The hair dryer had great airflow, which made drying my hair a breeze!

Lastly, here are some of the on-site amenities

available for guests to use during their stay.

There was a long, indoor swimming pool on the 5th floor.

It didn't seem to have too many users,

making it a perfect spot to enjoy a spacious, relaxing swim.

There was also a gym located on the 5th floor.

While there weren't many weight-training machines,

there were plenty of treadmills and stationary bikes,

making it a great setup for a solid cardio workout!

Today, I introduced the Grand Central Hotel, a 5-star hotel

located right near Nanjing Road in Shanghai.

The location is incredible since it's surrounded by shopping spots and amazing restaurants,

it's highly popular among international travelers which makes it feel safe and secure,

and the rooms are exceptionally spacious, ensuring a very comfortable stay.

On top of satisfying all these great conditions,

the fact that you can book a room for around ~$115 to ~$120

is definitely its biggest selling point.

Since most of the rooms are designed for up to two guests,

I highly recommend it for couples, solo travelers, or those

traveling with family!

That being said, I know many travelers might still prefer a slightly smaller,

even more budget-friendly accommodation.
