Why Jerónimos Monastery is a Must-See

Construction on Jerónimos Monastery began in 1502 and took a staggering 170 years to complete! It was built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's successful voyage to India, a pivotal moment in Portuguese history.
The monastery is a prime example of Manueline architecture, named after King Manuel I of Portugal. It's widely regarded as one of the finest and most representative buildings of this distinctive Portuguese Gothic style in the world.

Remarkably, it survived the devastating Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755, which means its preservation is exceptional. The interior is incredibly grand and beautiful, offering so much to admire.
And for travelers, one of its biggest draws is how photogenic it is – every angle seems to be a perfect shot!

How to Get There from Lisbon City Center

Jerónimos Monastery is located in Lisbon's charming Belém district. While it's a bit outside the city center, it's easily accessible by public transport.
The most popular option is taking the tram. A quick check on Google Maps will show you that it's often the fastest and most direct route, usually without any transfers.
✔ Tram 15E
Board in the city center and get off at the Centro Cultural de Belém stop.
It's about a 4-minute walk from there.
✔ Bus
Take bus routes 201, 714, 727, 728, or 751.
Get off at the Centro Cultural de Belém stop.
It's also about a 4-minute walk from there.

With your Lisboa Card, you can ride trains, trams, and buses all for free! This means your journey to the monastery itself is completely free.
The Belém district offers more than just the monastery; you'll also find the Monument to the Discoveries and Belém Tower. We highly recommend dedicating a full day to explore this historic area.
Jerónimos Monastery Entry & Best Photo Spots

If you're visiting the monastery with a Lisboa Card, your queuing method will be different from general admission. Look for the dedicated Lisboa Card line; presenting your card there will grant you immediate entry.
This special line is usually *much* shorter than the regular one, so definitely take advantage of it!

What if you don't have a Lisboa Card? There's one more way to get in for free:
✔ Free Admission: First Sunday of every month
However, be warned that these days are incredibly crowded. Using your Lisboa Card on a slightly less busy day will likely give you a much more enjoyable experience.

The interior of Jerónimos Monastery is packed with photo opportunities. While you can usually explore the main areas in about an hour, taking your time to discover these photo zones will make your visit even more memorable. Here are our top picks!

📌 Photo Zone 1: The Cloister Courtyard
Once inside, you'll enter a stunning two-story cloister courtyard with long, intricately carved corridors.
Snapping photos through the arched columns will give you that quintessential European vibe. Aim for the morning when the light streams in – the interplay of light and shadow is absolutely magical!

📌 Photo Zone 2: Overlooking from the Second-Floor Corridor
The view of the courtyard from the second-floor corridor is unrealistically beautiful.
Try both a shot looking down into the courtyard and one using the columns as a backdrop. You won't regret it!

📌 Photo Zone 3: With the Central Garden as Your Backdrop
This was a spot I stumbled upon because others were gathering there. While you can't actually enter the garden, you can find certain vantage points that make it look like you're right in it!
Head to the opposite diagonal corner from the 1st-floor entrance. This sweet spot allows you to capture the entire Jerónimos Monastery in the background, along with the beautiful garden. It's truly a prime photo location!

As mentioned, understanding the monastery's historical significance can make your visit even more rewarding. The interior is so grand and beautiful, though it can get quite busy with many visitors.
And the most important tip? Sunlight!

If it's cloudy, you'll miss out on those stunning sunbeam and shadow effects, which would be a shame. So, we highly recommend visiting on a clear, sunny day. Go early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds and get plenty of amazing photos!

Don't forget, the surrounding Belém district also has other viewpoints and attractions offering free entry with the Lisboa Card. We suggest a perfect day trip: enjoy some delicious Belém custard tarts, then head to the Monument to the Discoveries viewpoint, and finally climb up Belém Tower for an unforgettable experience!
