Just yesterday, while browsing the aisles of Don Quijote, a product caught my eye. It was the Pyuora (ピュオーラ) Carbonated Hamigaki!
If you're into Japanese lifestyle products or love hunting for unique finds in drugstores, this is definitely something to check out. For those of you searching for a fantastic Japanese toothpaste recommendation, let me introduce you to Pyuora Carbonated Hamigaki.
ピュオーラ 炭酸ハミガキ
Pyuora Carbonated Hamigaki
🫧 The name itself, "Carbonated Hamigaki," is quite intriguing. First off, 'Hamigaki (歯みがき)' simply means toothpaste or brushing teeth in Japanese. As the name suggests, Pyuora Carbonated Hamigaki stands out from conventional toothpastes with its "carbonated" concept.
The word "carbonated" just gives you that feeling it's going to clean your teeth extra thoroughly, right? That's what convinced me to pick one up!

The Carbonated Hamigaki comes in two varieties:
One is the Original Formula, and the other is the Whitening Formula.
Original Formula — Crystal Soda Flavor / 3.35 ounces (95g)
This formula generates foam through the reaction of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and citric acid. It's blended with CPC, BGA, and fluoride, aiming to prevent periodontal disease, cavities, and bad breath.

✔ Prevents Cavities
✔ Prevents Bad Breath
Whitening Formula — White Sparkling Flavor / 3.35 ounces (95g)
In addition to the basic prevention of periodontal disease, cavities, and bad breath, this version offers whitening care by cleaning stains accumulated on the tooth surface. It contains a high concentration of fluoride (1450ppm) and the cleaning ingredient sodium polyphosphate. It's described as having approximately five times the foaming power of the original formula.

✨ Ideal for anyone concerned about tooth discoloration
✨ Perfect for those seeking a whitening toothpaste
✨ A must-try for foam lovers!
Product Features
🫧 To quickly summarize its core benefits:
1. Gum Disease Prevention
It contains the sterilizing ingredient CPC (Cetylpyridinium Chloride) and the anti-inflammatory ingredient BGA (β-Glycyrrhetinic Acid). This is a medicated toothpaste designed to prevent gingivitis and periodontitis.
2. Cavity Prevention
With fluoride (Sodium Monofluorophosphate) as an active ingredient, it aims to prevent tooth decay.
3. Bad Breath Prevention
Through the antiseptic action of CPC, it targets the prevention of bad breath and gingivitis.
4. Carbonated Foam Cleans Between Teeth and Gumline
When it comes into contact with water, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) reacts with citric acid to create a unique foam. This fine, bubbly foam penetrates between your teeth and along the gumline during brushing, providing a thorough clean.
In short, it’s:
“A Japanese medicated toothpaste known for its distinctive foam, designed for gum, cavity, and bad breath prevention.”
Where to Buy
I personally bought mine at Don Quijote, but you'll also find it in most Japanese drugstores. So, if you're planning a trip to Japan, just head to your nearest drugstore or Don Quijote, and you should be able to pick one up!

My Experience

Since it was my first time trying it, I opted for the Original Formula. And wow! Honestly, the toothpaste I usually use doesn't foam up much, so I was genuinely surprised by how much foam this Carbonated Hamigaki produced!
If you're accustomed to regular foaming toothpastes, you might not notice as big a difference. But there was definitely a rich, full feeling in my mouth. And knowing that these tiny bubbles are working to clean between my teeth and gums just made my teeth feel even cleaner, almost psychologically!
Regarding bad breath prevention, I personally found that my mouth felt incredibly clean and fresh for a long time after brushing. I brushed at night, and even when I woke up in the morning, that fresh feeling was still there.
To be frank, the Original Formula has a "Crystal Soda" flavor, and I'm not a big fan of soda flavors, so the taste itself wasn't my favorite. However, the incredible cleanliness I experienced after using it makes me want to keep using it. It's truly that clean!
I've tried many popular Japanese toothpastes before, but none have left my mouth feeling as thoroughly clean as Pyuora Carbonated Hamigaki.
While I can't speak to gum disease or cavity prevention after just one use, the bad breath prevention, especially the clean and refreshing feeling after brushing, really impressed me. I genuinely highly recommend it!
I found the carbonated foam quite abundant. The first time, I squeezed out a regular amount like I would with any other toothpaste, but the second time, I used just a small amount, and it was still more than enough!

Final Thoughts
A toothpaste unlike anything you've tried before?! Brushing with the carbonated foam that forms when it meets water offers a truly unique experience, all while preventing periodontal disease, cavities, and bad breath. The fact that it comes in two types is another major plus, allowing you to choose based on your preference!
🫧 The Original Formula is perfect for those looking for fundamental oral care, focusing on gums, bad breath, and cavity prevention.
✨ The Whitening Formula, with its "floating whitening" action, is ideal for anyone concerned about surface stains on their teeth or who wants to combine whitening care with their daily routine.
👉 If you're wondering, "What should I buy when I go to Japan?", definitely add "Pyuora Carbonated Hamigaki" to your shopping list!
