This is an informative guide researched and compiled just for you. (As of July 2026)
Let's dive into Japan's tripled departure tax starting July 1st,
and why you should still buy your plane tickets now.

🔎 Japan's Departure Tax (International Tourist Tax) is a tax included in your airline ticket price and applied to all travelers leaving Japan. As of July 1, 2026, it has been increased from 1,000 JPY to 3,000 JPY per person.
⭐️ Today's Travel Difficulty: ★☆☆
You can still travel without knowing this, but knowing it will save you money!
Since the departure tax is automatically included in your ticket, there's nothing extra you need to prepare.
Instead, timing your flight purchase is where the real strategy lies!

1. What is Japan's Departure Tax?

Its official name is the "International Tourist Tax."
Introduced in January 2019,
it applies to everyone leaving Japan by flight or ship,
regardless of nationality or age.
You don't pay it separately at the airport;
it is automatically bundled into your flight ticket price.
Children under the age of 2 are exempt.
You can check the official Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) website for more details.

2. How Much is the Departure Tax Increase?

Category | Previous | From July 2026 |
Departure Tax | 1,000 JPY (~$6) | 3,000 JPY (~$17) |
Family of 4 | ~$24 | ~$70 |
✅ Applies to travelers departing on or after July 1, 2026.
Tickets issued up to June 30th were charged the old rate,
but that window has now closed.
The increased revenue is said to be used to ease airport congestion
and manage waste caused by the massive influx of tourists.
3. Why You Should Book Your Japan Flights Right Now?

"Should I skip Japan because the departure tax went up?"
You might be thinking this, but putting it off might actually cost you more!
✔️ International fuel surcharges are down starting in July!
Flight prices themselves are currently at a low point.
✔️ Local accommodation taxes are rising across various regions in Japan,
so hotel costs are likely to go up soon as well.
✔️ The planned introduction of JESTA (Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization) in 2028
could bring additional processing fees.

In short, the fixed costs of traveling to Japan are set to keep climbing.
The 2,000 JPY tax increase can easily be offset by scoring a good flight deal!
🚨 Quick Travel Tip! |
Fuel surcharges change every month. Since July falls in a lower-charge period, the total cost might actually be cheaper than booking back in June. Make sure to check real-time flight prices today! |
