🔎 Japan's Departure Tax (International Tourist Tax) is a tax included in your airline ticket price and applied to all travelers leaving Japan. As of July 1, 2026, it has been increased from 1,000 JPY to 3,000 JPY per person.

Since the departure tax is automatically included in your ticket, there's nothing extra you need to prepare.

1. What is Japan's Departure Tax?

Its official name is the "International Tourist Tax."

Introduced in January 2019,

it applies to everyone leaving Japan by flight or ship,

regardless of nationality or age.

You don't pay it separately at the airport;

it is automatically bundled into your flight ticket price.

Children under the age of 2 are exempt.

2. How Much is the Departure Tax Increase?

Tickets issued up to June 30th were charged the old rate,

but that window has now closed.

The increased revenue is said to be used to ease airport congestion

and manage waste caused by the massive influx of tourists.
