Planning a trip to Japan in 2026? Find out how an eSIM provides effortless internet access in Osaka, Nara, and Kobe, and why it's my top choice over a physical SIM card.
Ever since I discovered the magic of eSIMs, or more accurately, realized my phone supported them, they've been my go-to for every trip to Japan. When you compare an eSIM to a traditional physical SIM card for Japan, the convenience is undeniable. There's no fumbling with tiny cards on the plane, and crucially, you don't have to swap out your home SIM if you need your original number.

When you're abroad, sometimes you need to receive a text for verification or take a call on your home number. If you're using a local physical SIM, that means the hassle of swapping cards again. With an eSIM, those worries are gone. Your home number remains active for calls and texts, while your eSIM handles your data connection.
My Japan eSIM Review
My latest adventure took me to Osaka. Upon landing at Kansai International Airport, I simply activated my Japan eSIM for Osaka. That was it! My phone instantly connected to LTE, and I had perfect internet access. If you ever run into a snag, a quick toggle of airplane mode or a phone restart usually fixes it.
Being a major city, Osaka naturally had flawless coverage. But I also took day trips to Nara and Kobe, and my connection was strong and reliable there too. No complaints whatsoever!

I tend to use a lot of data while traveling, constantly working and updating my blog. In the past, I'd often cut it too close with my data plan, leading to constant anxiety. I even had to top up once towards the end of a trip. This time, I opted for a generous 20GB plan, and it was such a relief to use data freely without a second thought!
How to Set Up Your Japan eSIM

It really couldn't be simpler.
>> Japan eSIM | SoftBank 5G / DOCOMO 4G LTE
>> Japan eSIM Unlimited Data | Softbank / KDDI
Just click one of the links above, select your desired country (Japan, in my case for Osaka), choose your data plan, and you're done! I went with a generous 20GB to ensure I had plenty of data for my trip.
I used a second phone to set mine up, which is convenient because you'll need to scan a QR code. Normally, I'd use my PC and scan the QR code displayed on the monitor, but this time I was in a hurry and did it on the bus to the airport!
After payment, simply navigate to 'View eSIM Details' and then 'View Instructions'.

This will display your QR code. Just scan it with the phone you want to use the eSIM on, and you're all set! See? Using a Japan eSIM is truly straightforward.

It's as easy as pointing and scanning!
Tips for First-Time eSIM Users
This guide covered my experience and how to use an eSIM for Japan travel, but remember, eSIMs are available for many other countries too. Just choose your destination!
One final tip: while you can use both your eSIM and your physical SIM simultaneously (dual SIM mode), keeping both active can drain your phone's battery quite quickly. I recommend turning off your physical SIM when you don't need it and only activating it briefly for specific purposes, like receiving a verification code.
After arriving at Kansai Airport, simply turn on your Japan Osaka eSIM, and you should get an immediate LTE connection. If the connection isn't smooth, try toggling airplane mode off and on, or restarting your phone.
The author tended to use a lot of data for work and blogging during the trip. This time, I used a generous 20GB without any issues. The internet connection was good not only in Osaka but also during tours in Nara and Kobe.
To install the eSIM, simply scan the QR code provided after payment with the phone you intend to use it on. The author quickly completed the installation by scanning the QR code with a second phone while on the bus to the airport.
