Izumo Unagi
When I was researching amazing places to eat in Osaka,
one spot immediately caught my eye with its incredible visuals:
Izumo Unagi.
But it wasn't just a pretty face; the taste was equally fantastic!
I'm excited to share my detailed review of Izumo Unagi with you!

While planning my trip to Osaka, I instantly fell for the visual appeal of Izumo Unagi. It was one of those 'I have to go there!' moments.
Thanks to its jaw-dropping presentation, it's become quite the sensation on Instagram.
Since I was in Japan, trying some amazing unagi (eel) rice bowl was a must, so this place was a non-negotiable addition to my itinerary from the very beginning.
My husband's eyes lit up the moment I showed him a picture, so there was no way we weren't going! Haha.
You can book in advance via Google Maps, and while I opted for an 'open run' (arriving right at opening without a reservation), I definitely recommend making a reservation if you can.
2. Izumo Unagi: Booking & What to Expect

I arrived right when the restaurant opened for its evening service.
There were already a few people waiting ahead of me, and it seemed like the Instagram buzz was drawing in plenty of international visitors.
Of course, with a stellar 4.7-star rating on Google, it's a place that appeals to just about anyone!

We waited outside, perusing the menu, until exactly 5 PM.
They don't open a minute early; a staff member came out right on the dot and let us in one by one.
A sign prominently stated: NO CASH, CARD ONLY!!!!!! While most travelers carry cards, it was quite surprising to find a card-only establishment in Japan!

We were kindly ushered in as the second group, and right by the entrance, chefs were diligently grilling eel over hot coals. The aroma was incredible!
3. Inside Izumo Unagi: Ambiance & Dishes

The restaurant features a fully open kitchen with a bar-style counter, seating for about 7-8 people.

Each seat has a menu and what looks like a pepper shaker, but it's actually sansho (Japanese pepper). Eel can sometimes feel a bit rich, and a sprinkle of sansho really elevates the flavor! It's a unique spice, so give it a try!
There are also about four table seats further inside, perfect for groups of three or more.

We each ordered a Chuhai, and a complimentary simmered pumpkin dish arrived, almost like a starter.
If you visit after 5 PM, there's a cover charge of ~$2 per person. This includes a small appetizer, and you're also expected to order a drink.
If you prefer not to order drinks, it's best to visit during lunchtime.

Our unagi rice bowls arrived quickly! They were absolutely radiant... this visual is what draws so many people in.
The eel is pre-grilled, so it doesn't take long to serve. The egg underneath is wonderfully thick, and the eel itself is plump and incredibly tender.

One of the portions had a slightly shorter, but noticeably 'fatter' piece of eel, which was a pleasant surprise!
The rice is seasoned, but it's not overpowering. I didn't find it salty at all; if anything, it was subtly flavored.

The eel itself is perfectly cooked with a delightful sweet and savory glaze. When eaten with the rice and egg, it creates a perfectly balanced flavor profile. It's truly delicious!
You can choose your rice portion size, but ordering less rice doesn't actually reduce the price; it's just an option to get a smaller serving.
They offered to make any leftover rice into onigiri (rice balls), so I went with the standard portion. As expected, I had some rice left over.

When I asked for the leftover rice to be made into onigiri, they prepared it immediately and wrapped it neatly.
However, after all the eating we did during our trip, I never actually got around to eating the onigiri. Haha! So, I ended up wishing I had just chosen the smaller rice option after all.
All in all, I had a slight worry that Izumo Unagi might be all hype from Instagram, but it absolutely lived up to its reputation as a recommended restaurant! Haha.
There's a good reason for those excellent Google reviews.
One small note: its location isn't really in a major tourist hub, which might be a slight inconvenience for some visitors. If you're planning your itinerary, it pairs well if you're already exploring the Umeda area.
Wishing you all an incredible Osaka trip!
While walk-ins are possible, it's generally recommended to make a reservation in advance via Google Maps. If you visit after 5 PM, a seating charge of 330 JPY per person will be applied, and a drink order is mandatory.
Izumo Unagi is a 'no cash, card only' establishment, meaning cash payments are not accepted and only card payments are possible. If you have leftover rice after choosing your desired portion size, you can request it to be made into rice balls and wrapped.
The interior of the restaurant features a completely open kitchen, with bar-style seating for about 7-8 people and approximately 4 table seats for parties of 3 or more. To balance the richness of the unadon, we recommend sprinkling sansho pepper on it.
