Preparing for Your Ireland Adventure
As we prepared for our Northwest Europe campervan trip this year (2026),
the two items I focused most on were
quality rain gear (poncho/rainwear) and waterproof shoes (like Gore-Tex).
The weather in Northwest Europe, especially Ireland and Iceland,
is famously unpredictable. It's often said you can
"experience all four seasons in one day." One minute it's sunny,
then suddenly it's pouring rain, and a little while later,
the sun reappears as if nothing happened.
Just a few days into our journey,
we'd already encountered rain multiple times a day.
This is why good rainwear and waterproof shoes
are far more crucial here than an umbrella.
Strong winds are common, which can quickly invert an umbrella,
and once your clothes and shoes get soaked, your body temperature can drop quickly.
We purchased our rain gear for this trip from Travelaid
Since this was going to be an essential piece of equipment throughout our journey,
we carefully considered its features before making our selection.
Sudden Downpour? Impressed from First Use!
Upon arriving at the campsite and attempting to pitch our tent,
a sudden downpour began. We quickly grabbed our ponchos,
and successfully pitched the tent!
My husband, who's quite a big guy, commented that
most rain gear tends to be restrictive or uncomfortable when moving your arms.
But this product, being a poncho style,
allowed for much easier movement.
The length was generous, covering his thighs and legs sufficiently,
and the hood was deep enough that
it didn't easily blow off even in strong winds.
I particularly loved the sleeves. They feature a
double-cuff structure with an inner elastic band,
which did an excellent job of preventing rainwater from seeping in at the wrists.
Even while pitching the tent in the rain,
my inner arms stayed almost completely dry, which was quite satisfying.

After using it for several days during our trip,
the most impressive feature was its portability.
In Ireland, where rain often stops as quickly as it starts,
you'll find yourself frequently stowing your rainwear in your bag
and pulling it out again as needed.

Its compact size also makes it easy to slip into a backpack,
making it incredibly convenient to carry.
The fabric quality also felt well-considered.
Raindrops beaded up and rolled right off the surface,
and there was no sense of moisture easily seeping through.
An Excellent Choice, Even Early in the Trip!
The true value of travel gear is often only revealed
when you put it to the test in the field.
While preparing for our Northwest Europe trip,
I compared several rainwear products. Seeing this poncho perform its job
so well right from the start of our journey confirmed it was an excellent choice.
In places like Ireland, where rain can suddenly start
and then clear up just as quickly,
you'll frequently be taking your rainwear on and off.
Therefore, while waterproofing is crucial,
how easily you can carry it and
store it without fuss, even when wet, becomes equally important.
Thanks to this poncho and our waterproof shoes,
we haven't been caught off guard by any sudden downpours on this trip.
Our journey still has many miles to go, but
based on our experience so far,
