Uncover the magic of Galway, Ireland! This 2026 guide reveals how to explore its free-spirited charm, enjoy local culture, and find convenient parking.
If you're journeying through the west of Ireland, then
Galway is an absolute must-visit city.
It might not boast the grand scale or dazzling attractions of Dublin,
nor is it as enveloped by nature as Killarney, but
Galway possesses an unmistakable charm all its own.
It's a city brimming with a free-spirited, artistic vibe!
Our First Irish Stay: An Airbnb Near Loughrea

Before kicking off our campervan adventure,
we embarked on a 6-day journey with a rental car.
During the initial part of our trip,
we stayed in a mix of Airbnbs, hostels, and campsites.
Our very first accommodation was an Airbnb near Loughrea.
While driving through the countryside, I always wondered what the inside
of those charming Irish homes, nestled in the fields, looked like.
Our first night's Airbnb was exactly one of those quintessential Irish houses,
and it completely satisfied my curiosity!
A Clear Day in Galway: Bursting with Life!
Galway's city center is compact, making it wonderfully easy to explore on foot.
Our first stop was Eyre Square.
This centrally located square is the perfect place to kick off your Galway adventure.

Just a short stroll from the square, you'll find
Quay Street, Galway's iconic thoroughfare.
Colorful buildings line the street, housing an array of charming shops, lively pubs, and cozy cafes.
Music drifts from every corner, creating an infectious atmosphere.
Galway is especially renowned for its traditional Irish music, so you'll often have the pleasure
of encountering talented musicians performing right outside the pubs.

As you wander through Galway, you'll notice
an abundance of vibrant murals and captivating street performances.
It truly feels less like a city designed solely for tourists and more like
a place where people genuinely live and enjoy themselves.

A Must-Try in Galway: Authentic Irish Chips!

If you're looking for a true culinary delight in Galway,
I highly recommend the chips from Chipeen.
Originally known as ‘Prátaí’ (meaning ‘potato’ in Irish), the establishment changed its name to Chipeen this year, 2026.
But don't worry, only the name has changed; the owners, staff,
and their unwavering philosophy about chips remain exactly the same.
Run by two Galway brothers, they hand-cut fresh Irish potatoes daily
and double-fry them in Irish rapeseed oil.
The result? Perfectly crispy on the outside and wonderfully fluffy on the inside –
these are proper, authentic Irish chips!

What makes this place truly special is how they elevate the humble potato,
a staple Irish ingredient, making chips not just a side dish but the star of the show.

Galway Cathedral and Riverside Walks
Just a short distance from the bustling city center,
the area around Galway Cathedral and the River Corrib offers lovely walking paths.
The blend of historic buildings, the tranquil river, and lush green landscapes
perfectly captures that distinctive Irish ambiance.
