Ippudo Ramen Osaka Review: Best Tonkotsu in Umeda
Skip the tourist traps and eat like a local in Osaka! Read our review of Ippudo Ramen Umeda, from the rich Tonkotsu broth to the limited-edition menu.

When people think of the ultimate Osaka ramen trio, three names instantly come to mind:
Ichiran Ramen, Ippudo Ramen, and Kinryu Ramen
These are the absolute heavyweights of the local noodle scene.
While Ichiran is incredibly popular with tourists and often has massive lines, I wanted a more authentic vibe with a stronger local presence. That is why I headed to Ippudo Ramen!
Location

While Ippudo has three branches in the bustling Namba area, there is only one branch in Umeda.
It is located just a 5-minute walk (about 0.2 miles) from Umeda Station. Even better, it is right across from the HEP FIVE department store (famous for its red Ferris wheel) and Don Quijote, making it the perfect spot to refuel before or after a shopping spree.
Hours & Wait Times

Sunday to Thursday: 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM
Friday & Saturday: 11:00 AM – 3:00 AM
If you visit during the week, you can usually walk right in. However, expect a short wait of about 15 minutes on Friday and Saturday nights when the post-work and nightlife crowds roll in.
Vibe & Seating

The Umeda branch spans two floors. The first floor is much more spacious with larger tables, making it the ideal choice if you are traveling with a group.

When I visited, a sign directed guests to the second floor, which we happily followed.

They have a comfortable waiting area with chairs if you need to queue.

The second floor is cozy, featuring seating designed primarily for solo diners or pairs.
Interestingly, we were the only international tourists there; the rest of the room was filled with locals quietly enjoying their solo ramen bowls after a long day.

Each table comes fully stocked with tissues, toothpicks, pepper, and utensils.
Menu & Ordering

There is a digital kiosk right at the entrance. While there is an English option, the translation can be a bit clunky. If you find it confusing, don't hesitate to ask the staff for their physical English menu, which has much clearer descriptions.

The menu features three signature bowls, along with various customizable toppings, broth bases, and classic side dishes like gyoza. They even have limited-edition seasonal bowls that might overwhelm you with options!
The Taste Test: Our Honest Review

I ordered the absolute classic: the Shiromaru Motoaji (Tonkotsu Ramen).
This is your traditional creamy pork bone broth topped with tender chashu pork, a soft-boiled egg, nori (seaweed), and fresh green onions.
The noodles were incredibly springy! Personally, I preferred the texture here over Ichiran because they had a perfect al dente bite. The broth was rich but clean, never feeling overly greasy. The chashu was melt-in-your-mouth tender with zero gamey odor.

While Japanese ramen has a reputation for being quite salty to Western palates, the classic Shiromaru was perfectly balanced. If you appreciate a savory broth, this one is spot on.

My dining partner decided to try a limited-edition collaboration bowl called "Jinrui Mina Ippudo".
This bowl features a deep soy sauce (shoyu) broth wrapped in massive slices of roast beef, three sheets of nori, a soft-boiled egg, and green onions.
Ippudo definitely doesn't skimp on portion sizes; the toppings here were huge!

However, when my friend took the first sip, they were shocked by how salty it was. I took a sip to compare, and wow—it was incredibly intense.
It really showed me why some people find traditional Japanese shoyu ramen overwhelming. It was so salty that drinking the broth directly was almost impossible for us.

That being said, if you just eat the noodles, they absorb the rich soy aroma beautifully without being too overpowering.
But if you want a bowl you can easily finish down to the last drop, stick to the classic Tonkotsu.
If you want to skip the tourist-heavy chains and experience a bowl of ramen alongside local Osaka residents, Ippudo Umeda is a must-visit.
Just remember: if you are sensitive to salt, the classic Tonkotsu is your best bet!

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the operating hours and weekend waiting times at Ippudo Ramen Umeda?
It is open from 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM from Sunday to Thursday, and from 11:00 AM to 3:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. There is rarely a wait on weekdays, but you may have to wait up to 15 minutes on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Which floor is better for group customers at Ippudo Umeda?
Ippudo Umeda is divided into a first and second floor. The first floor is much more spacious with more tables, making it better for groups. The second floor is narrow and mainly consists of tables for 1 to 2 people, making it suitable for solo diners or small parties.
Does the ordering kiosk at Ippudo Umeda support Korean?
The kiosk at the entrance does not support Korean and can only be changed to English. Since the English translation can be a bit awkward, we recommend referring to the menu images or asking the staff for a physical menu for foreigners.
Which menu item at Ippudo Ramen suits Korean tastes, and which one should be avoided?
We recommend the 'Shiromaru Motoaji', a classic tonkotsu ramen with a clean and well-balanced flavor that suits Korean tastes. On the other hand, the limited edition 'Jinrui Mina Ippudo' has a rich soy sauce base and can be very salty, so it is best avoided if you are sensitive to salty food.
