Ilima Hotel Honolulu Review 2026: Budget Waikiki Stay
Looking for an affordable family stay in Hawaii? Here's my 2026 review of the Ilima Hotel in Honolulu, featuring full kitchens, free parking, and great value.

When planning my second trip to Hawaii, I made a promise to myself: this time, we are maximizing our budget.
· Ilima Hotel : ~$150 to ~$230 per night
(Includes resort fee, NO parking fees!)
· 4 to 5-star hotels : ~$380 to ~$460+ per night
(Plus a ~$60 resort fee and ~$50 daily parking fee)
Staying at what many call the ultimate budget-friendly hotel in Hawaii saved us a massive amount of money every single day.
Plus, it's a residence-style hotel complete with a full kitchen, making it highly recommended for family trips to Honolulu!
1. Why I Recommend the Ilima Hotel in Honolulu

📌 Ilima Hotel Location Highlights
· 8-minute walk to Waikiki Beach
· 3-minute walk to Kona Coffee Purveyors
· 2-minute walk to Marugame Udon
While it's not sitting directly on the sand,
being tucked slightly inland actually meant we were much closer to the main shopping streets and restaurants!
Many 2- or 3-star accommodations in Hawaii show their age, but
this property was renovated in 2022,
so it’s incredibly clean and well-maintained. A huge plus!

In Hawaii, grabbing a simple meal out can easily cost ~$23 to ~$38 per person.
Having a full kitchen in your Honolulu hotel is an absolute game-changer.
You can pick up some steaks from Costco to grill, or
easily whip up instant curries and ramen.
It takes away all the stress of dining out, especially if you're traveling with kids or older parents.

But the absolute biggest reason I booked the Ilima Hotel?
Free parking!
(Most other Waikiki hotels charge $30-$50 a day just for parking.
Add the hefty resort fees on top of that, and it's just too much.)
Finding a spot with low resort fees and free parking
is the ultimate hack to save big on your Hawaiian vacation.
With base rates around ~$150+, a resort fee of just $45 per night,
and zero parking fees, you can easily stay here for around ~$230+ a night total.
📌 Price Comparison

~$205 | ~$211 |
The $45/night resort fee is paid directly at the property,
and including that, our total came out to about ~$254 per night.
(Pro tip: Agoda often applies automatic discount coupons.
Rooms for the peak late-summer/fall season are filling up fast, so don't wait!)

2. Inside the Ilima Hotel Rooms

I stayed in the Standard Studio room.
At 527 sq ft, it felt incredibly spacious and comfortable.
The room tiers go from Standard to Superior to Deluxe,
which is primarily just a difference in floor level.
Since I didn't care much for a high-floor view, I saved some cash
and booked the Standard Studio on the 4th floor.

The kitchen area is surprisingly large, making meal prep a breeze.
Because of the recent remodel,
the room felt very fresh and, most importantly, totally bug-free!

The refrigerator is quite large, too.
🍯 Tip: On your first day, hit up Costco or Walmart to
stock up on meats, fresh fruit, yogurt, drinks, and bottled water.
Costco is the cheapest, followed by Walmart, then ABC Stores.
Just remember Costco means buying in bulk.
(If it's just two of you, Walmart is the sweet spot!)

The kitchen comes with a two-burner induction stove.

It’s fully stocked with utensils, plates, bowls, knives, pots, and pans—
everything you need to cook a proper meal.

We grilled steaks from Costco, snacked on fresh fruit and yogurt,
and usually relied on delivery or a quick run for Iyasume Musubi or cup noodles
for at least one meal a day to keep things easy!

The bathroom features a standard bathtub,
and I was personally just thrilled that it had a regular handheld showerhead!
(Many US hotels only have those fixed rainfall showerheads,
which can be frustrating, so this was a nice little bonus.)
Honestly, the provided toiletries weren't my favorite,
so I'd recommend bringing your own.
The hairdryer is wall-mounted, which isn't ideal,
but the airflow was strong enough to get the job done.
3. Ilima Hotel Amenities & Facilities

We mostly just spread out our gear and made ourselves at home haha.
After staying for 6 nights, it truly felt like our own little apartment.

After a long day of swimming, we'd hang our swimsuits in the closet
and leave our snorkeling gear and water shoes
out on the balcony to dry.

There's also a coin laundry room on-site,
which I highly recommend using to wash your swimsuits before packing them for the flight home!
Nobody wants to pack a sandy, damp swimsuit,
so throwing them in the wash first is a lifesaver.
(And they even provide free laundry detergent!)

There is a small hotel pool on the first floor,
but to be honest, we never used it.
Between swimming at Waikiki Beach and
snorkeling at Hanauma Bay and the North Shore,
we were too busy enjoying the real ocean!
(If you're traveling with little ones, I'd suggest hitting the nearby Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon over the hotel pool anyway.)
In a destination where dropping $400+ a night is the norm,
securing a stay for around ~$230+ a night is a massive win.
After spending 6 nights here, between the fantastic location
and the convenience of a full kitchen,
I completely understand why the Ilima Hotel is a cult favorite among budget-savvy travelers.
(I'm already dreaming of going back...)
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a cost-effective hotel near Waikiki!
