1. Where is the Best Area to Stay in Mexico City?

National Museum of Anthropology on the left, Angel of Independence in the center, Palacio de Bellas Artes and Templo Mayor on the right.
When planning a trip to Mexico City (CDMX), safety is naturally a top priority for most travelers.
For a worry-free experience, there are three primary neighborhoods that are highly recommended for tourists: Polanco, Roma Norte, and Zona Rosa.
Using the iconic Angel of Independence as a central landmark, Polanco sits to the northwest, Zona Rosa is just south of it, and Roma Norte lies further south.

Palacio de Bellas Artes
Further east is the Historic Center (Centro Histórico), where you'll find landmark sights like the Zócalo and Templo Mayor.
Here is a quick breakdown of the safest neighborhoods to help you choose the perfect base for your style:
Neighborhood | Characteristics | Pros & Cons |
Polanco | Home to embassies, luxury high-rises, and Michelin-starred dining. Superb access to Chapultepec Park, the Anthropology Museum, and the Soumaya Museum. Heavy police presence makes it incredibly safe to walk around, even at night. | Unmatched safety and peace of mind with premium hotel options. Dining and accommodations are on the pricier side. |
Roma Norte | The ultimate hub for expats, creatives, and digital nomads. Packed with trendy cafes, local galleries, and incredible brunch spots. | Vibrant, well-lit streets with plenty of foot traffic. Excellent boutique hotels and foodie spots. Hotel rates are rising, and quiet side alleys can feel a bit secluded late at night. |
Zona Rosa | Centrally located with excellent transit connections to explore the entire city. A bustling area filled with shopping, nightlife, and diverse dining. | Highly accessible via metro and bus. Lively, budget-friendly lodging options are plentiful. Can get quite noisy at night. Standard city awareness is required to avoid petty theft like pickpocketing. |
Wanting maximum peace of mind, I decided to base myself in Polanco, which is widely considered the safest and most upscale district in the city.
While it is slightly further from the Historic Center, rideshares and taxis in Mexico City are incredibly affordable, making the commute seamless and comfortable.

Polanco is lined with upscale restaurants like this, reminiscent of Europe.
Mexico City is a sprawling metropolis, meaning you'll likely rely on transit or rideshares regardless of where you stay. Walking everywhere simply isn't an option.
Because transport is so cheap and easy, prioritizing neighborhood safety over proximity to tourist spots is definitely the way to go.

I stayed in a standard room, which was incredibly spacious—perfect for laying out multiple large suitcases without feeling cramped. A huge plus in my book!

The safest areas for tourists to stay in Mexico City are Polanco, Roma Norte, and Zona Rosa. Among them, Polanco is the safest, as it is home to embassies and luxury hotels. Roma Norte has many cafes and restaurants, while Zona Rosa offers excellent access to public transportation.
Based on the standard room type, the space is large enough to comfortably open a suitcase. It includes a closet area, a safe, a capsule coffee machine, and a refrigerator. The bathroom features a single sink and a spacious shower booth stocked with amenities, along with plenty of bottled water for brushing your teeth.
A great value-for-money accommodation in the Polanco area is District Polanco by Lumina. It is a boutique hotel with carefully designed room interiors, and you can stay there for about a half to a third of the price of nearby global chain hotels.
The accommodation recently featured on a variety show is Caliza Roma Residences by Tasman. It is a new property built less than two years ago, offering spacious rooms for the price, and its location right near the Angel of Independence makes it very convenient for getting around.
