When my husband and I were planning our Lisbon trip, finding the perfect accommodation meant prioritizing two things: a fantastic location for sightseeing and a comfortable 4-star experience. After much deliberation, we landed on Hotel Mundial, and we're so glad we did!
To be upfront, while we absolutely loved our stay, the room condition might be a bit polarizing for some. However, for us, the undeniable perks far outweighed any minor drawbacks. Imagine this: being steps away from Rossio Square and major attractions, having easy access to the iconic Tram 28, a convenient supermarket right on the ground floor, surprisingly spacious rooms, and soaking in the breathtaking night views of São Jorge Castle from the rooftop bar. These advantages truly made our experience unforgettable.

Location, Location, Location! |
Without a doubt, Hotel Mundial's greatest asset is its incredible location. We arrived in Lisbon by train from Porto, disembarking at Lisboa-Oriente station, then took the subway. Our initial plan was to go to Martim Moniz station, right by the hotel.
However, we noticed that Martim Moniz Square can be a bit rough around the edges, with some homeless individuals and a noticeable smell. While we never felt unsafe, it wasn't the most welcoming first impression. As we settled in, we realized we rarely had to pass through that specific square. In fact, it's often more convenient to skip Martim Moniz and go one stop further to Rossio (ROSSIO) subway station. From there, it feels even closer to the hotel, and the area is bustling with shops and feels much safer.
(Fun fact: The Zara store near Rossio Square is massive! My husband found some great deals there, haha!)
When it was time to leave, getting to Lisbon Portela Airport from Hotel Mundial took us about 15 minutes by Bolt, covering roughly 4-4.5 miles. The location truly can't be beaten!
On the map, the red boxes indicate major tourist spots. Rossio Square, Figueira Square, and São Domingos Church are all within a 5-10 minute walk. But the real game-changer is its proximity to a Tram 28 stop.
Catching Tram 28 from here (following the arrow towards Alfama) makes exploring landmarks like Lisbon Cathedral, various viewpoints, and São Jorge Castle incredibly easy. Our sightseeing itinerary flowed perfectly, thanks to this strategic spot.
Although not explicitly shown on the map, the Santa Justa Lift is also nearby (it was unfortunately closed during our visit). Another huge plus? There's a large supermarket conveniently located on the ground floor of the hotel!
It was fantastic to grab some local beers or snacks after a long day of exploring and enjoy them comfortably in our room.

Stepping into the hotel, we were impressed by its considerable size. The lobby has clearly undergone a recent renovation, giving it a fresh, modern feel.
Our Classic Room (available with a double bed or two singles) measured a generous ~452 sq ft. This ample space was fantastic for spreading out our luggage and organizing our belongings without feeling cramped. However, it's worth noting that the interior decor and bathroom clearly show the hotel's age, hinting at a more traditional style rather than ultra-modern.
Though not perfectly visible in the photo, the amenities provided were from Castelbel, a lovely Portuguese brand.
If you're expecting a brand-new, sleek hotel room, you might be a little underwhelmed. However, for us, service and cleanliness are paramount, and Hotel Mundial delivered on both fronts without issue. What truly won us over was the captivating view overlooking Martim Moniz Square. While we'd heard it could be noisy, our stay was surprisingly quiet and peaceful, so we experienced no disturbances whatsoever.

Hotel Mundial has an interesting system for breakfast: you pre-select your dining time. We set ours during check-in, as we figured we'd forget to do it later, though you can change it if needed.
The breakfast spread wasn't gourmet, but it was certainly varied and offered a good selection of dishes. You won't leave hungry!
The dining area could get quite busy, but the staff remained incredibly friendly and efficient even during peak hours. My absolute favorite part? Snagging a window seat!
From there, you can watch the iconic Tram 28 rumble by. It truly made us feel immersed in the vibrant energy of Lisbon every morning. Pure bliss!
The Rooftop Bar
The 8th-floor rooftop bar was, surprisingly, one of the most memorable spots at Hotel Mundial. The servers were incredibly cheerful and friendly, striking up natural conversations as they took our orders.
While the hotel facilities aren't exceptionally luxurious, the staff's warmth and attentiveness truly stood out – a refreshing experience compared to some other European establishments. But the real star of the rooftop? The night view! Seriously, you HAVE to go. Go every night if you can! ♥️
You get a direct, stunning view of the illuminated São Jorge Castle, rising majestically above the city's charming red rooftops.
Spending time up here, simply gazing at the cityscape, was truly magical. If you're staying at Hotel Mundial, make sure to carve out an evening to experience this incredible view.

For us, the fantastic advantages more than compensated for the slightly dated feel of the rooms.

✔️ Highly recommended if you value an excellent sightseeing location, reliable 4-star service, and the convenience of a nearby supermarket (who doesn't love that?).
