Hotel Moderno Rome Review 2026: Budget Termini Stay
Is it safe to stay near Rome Termini Station? Discover why Hotel Moderno offers the perfect blend of budget-friendly rates, comfort, and convenience.

Budget-Friendly Hotel Near Rome Termini Station
Great Condition & Just a 5-Minute Walk Away!
For the final leg of my trip, I returned to Rome and stayed at Hotel Moderno, located just a 5-minute walk from Termini Station!
Offering fantastic value, a prime location, and solid amenities, it’s a perfect choice for couples or friends exploring the city.
Since it's an adults-only hotel, it might not work for family vacations, but otherwise, it definitely deserves a spot on your Rome accommodation shortlist.
I paid for this stay out of pocket, so here is my completely honest review covering the pros, cons, neighborhood safety, and pricing!

1. Location & Neighborhood Safety
Are you worried about the safety around Termini Station? Many travelers are, but honestly, I felt completely fine during my stay!
There’s a strong military and police presence stationed right near the station.

I had heard rumors that the area to the right of the Basilica Papale di Santa Maria Maggiore (near Termini) can be sketchy.
Because of that, I specifically looked for hotels in the yellow highlighted area on the map above.
Ultimately, I stayed at two different hotels in Rome, and even as two female travelers walking around at night, we never felt unsafe in this specific location!

The building in the photo above is the hotel itself! I snapped this around 9:00 or 10:00 PM, and there were no shady characters around.
To be completely transparent, there were a few alleys nearby that had a bit of an... unpleasant smell.

During the day, the vibe is bright and lively. You can tell there are plenty of tourists around, which adds to the feeling of security.
My Verdict on Safety:
As long as you aren't wandering down dark alleys at 3 AM, the area is safe. Being just a 4-minute walk from the station makes transit incredibly easy!
Would I stay here again? Absolutely.

When checking in, you have to pay Rome's city tax. For Hotel Moderno, it was 30 Euros total for 2 adults for 2 nights.
A fun little touch: they had a random lucky draw at check-in! We ended up winning a free Carbonara dish and an olive oil tasting experience, which we could redeem at their affiliated restaurant.
They offer a few complimentary experiences like this, making it a fun surprise if you have a flexible itinerary!

The hotel has two spacious elevators, and the AC in the room was blasting cold—two major priorities for me when booking European hotels.
The elevators easily fit a person with large luggage, so you won't have to squeeze in or make multiple trips.
2. Room Conditions
Standard Double Room
Since we spent most of our 2-night stay out exploring or on Southern Italy tours, we booked the most affordable option: the Standard Double Room. It exceeded my expectations!

The room is listed as roughly 200 sq ft. We had no problem fully opening two large 28-inch suitcases.
One unique quirk: the toilet and the shower are in two separate spaces on opposite sides of the entryway.

Some might find this layout strange, but when traveling with a friend, it actually cuts down on getting-ready time. I kind of loved it!
Both the toilet and shower areas are surprisingly spacious. The shower room even had a shelf behind it where I could comfortably leave my personal toiletries.

Another thing that impressed me was the service!
We arrived before check-in, dropped off our bags, and came back quite late after dinner. They had already brought our heavy suitcases up to the room. Such a relief!
There’s plenty of space to hang clothes and store luggage, plus a safe for your valuables.

The desk area is wide and clean, perfect for setting out your daily essentials or getting some work done on a laptop. There's a TV too, great for winding down with YouTube or Netflix.

There isn't much of a view—just the building next door—but you can open the window for fresh air.

Most importantly: the bed.
The sheets were crisp and fresh, and the pillows were perfectly low-profile. The mattress was firm enough that I passed out the second my head hit the pillow!
My only minor complaint is that there was only one nightstand, so the person on the other side had to leave their phone on the floor to charge. Not a dealbreaker by any means.
3. Budget Hotel Pricing
As Italy's biggest tourist hub, Rome's hotel prices can be shocking. Honestly, any "decent" hotel starts at around $308 per night!
For example, the highly-rated IQ Hotel (also 4 stars) runs about ~$462 to ~$538 per night during shoulder and peak seasons. If you just need a clean place to sleep, that hurts the wallet.

In contrast, Hotel Moderno can be booked for ~$77 to ~$154 per night in the off-season, and around ~$230 to ~$308 during peak seasons!

I compared a few platforms, and if you're booking for late June, keep an eye on Trip.com.
Until 06/30/2026, there's a 12% discount (up to ~$23) if you use specific regional payment apps like KakaoPay.
The best part is there's no minimum spend, and it can be used once daily!

4. Final Thoughts
I went back and forth on whether to stay near Rome's major historical sites or right by Termini Station.
After lugging around heavy suitcases and taking early morning trains, I am so glad I chose the Termini area!

If you have a packed itinerary with intercity travel or early tour meet-ups, and you want a clean, budget-friendly hotel, I highly recommend Hotel Moderno.
I hope this review helps you plan your 2026 Rome getaway! Let me know in the comments if you have any questions.
