Salzburg isn't a huge city,
so many people visit just for a day trip. But trust me, there is way more to see than you'd think,
and it's incredibly easy to get to St. Gilgen, a gorgeous nearby town where you can experience Lake Wolfgang.
If you want to explore the emerald lakes and wander through every charming corner of Salzburg,
a day trip is definitely not enough time!
We stayed for one night in Salzburg,
but looking back, we really wished we had stayed for two.
So if you’re debating between a day trip and an overnight stay, we highly recommend staying at least one night.

Best Areas to Stay in Salzburg
First off, when traveling around Europe by train,
the absolute best place to stay is near the station.
Our recommended hotel areas in Salzburg are:
✅ Near the Central Station (Hauptbahnhof)
✅ Around Mirabell Palace to Mozart's Birthplace (where the main attractions are concentrated)
Looking at general accommodation costs,
hotels near the main attractions tend to be pricier than those near the Central Station.
And if you're on a short 1 or 2-night trip,
to avoid wasting precious transit time,
it’s best to choose a place right near the Central Station.
Now, in some European cities, the area around the train station can feel a bit sketchy,
so you usually have to be careful when picking a location.
(But don't worry—the area around Salzburg Central Station is very clean, safe, and pleasant!)
Our Salzburg home-away-from-home, Adlerhof,
was just a 6-minute walk from the Central Station, which made life so easy.
Staying near the station is not only convenient
for traveling between cities,
but since the station is also the hub for local transit,
there are tons of transport options for sightseeing,
meaning you won't have to wait long for a tram or bus at all!
This is especially true if you plan on taking day trips to nearby towns like we did.
With a massive bus terminal right in front of the station,
it gives you the ultimate convenience for all three: intercity travel / day trips / Salzburg sightseeing.
It was actually raining and pretty gloomy the day we arrived,
and if our hotel had been far from the station,
it would have been a real struggle dragging our bags through the wet streets.
On the first day of our 2-day Salzburg itinerary,
our plan was to drop our luggage off at the hotel
and head straight to the lakeside town of St. Gilgen.
As soon as we arrived, the hotel’s exterior gave off a beautifully antique, classic vibe.
It also has a parking lot,
which is a huge plus if you're planning a road trip with a rental car!
Stepping into the lobby, we found cozy tables to relax at,
along with a coffee machine and vending machines.
Matching its antique exterior, the check-in process was delightfully analog.
The staff handed us a paper form
where we filled in our name, passport number, and address.
Once checked in, we stored our luggage and headed out.
There was also clear information about the Wi-Fi
displayed right at the front desk.

Rooms and Pricing
When traveling through Europe, you often run into hotels with no elevators
or ones so tiny they can barely fit a single suitcase.
But at Adlerhof, our Salzburg hotel,
the elevator was quite modern and surprisingly spacious!
To get into your room, you use a classic physical key.
Instead of just turning it once like we do back home,
you have to turn it about two to two and a half times to unlock it.
The room we booked was the "Quadruple Room"
Since there were three of us, we originally tried to book a triple room,
but because they were already fully booked,
we ended up choosing a room that could accommodate up to four guests.
It came with one queen bed, one single bed, and one sofa bed,
and since the sofa bed didn't look like the best option for a deep sleep,
we used it as a handy spot to lay out our bags, toiletries, and clothes.
Honestly, booking the quadruple room for the three of us turned out to be a pretty smart move!
The room was actually quite spacious, making it super comfortable for the three of us.
The wardrobe had a wonderfully antique vibe.
Even though we chose this place for its budget-friendly price,
it gave us way more of that cozy, classic European feel than any modern hotel could offer.
Inside the wardrobe, there was a safe and plenty of hangers,
which were perfect for hanging up our jackets and clothes that got a bit damp in the rain.
The room was equipped with a full-length mirror, an electric kettle, and a mini-fridge,
and having power outlets right next to the bed made everything so convenient.
This charming, cozy bed completely stole my heart!
From the warm wooden bed frame to the lush green views right outside the window,
Salzburg has so much to see that we didn't spend
a ton of time in our room,
but the interior felt exactly like the fairytale European dream—so warm and welcoming.
Even the bedside lamp and curtains at Adlerhof,
our lovely stay in Salzburg, were absolutely perfect!
The bathroom has a separate layout for the shower room and toilet.
In the shower room, there's a sink, a hairdryer, rinsing cups,
and basic amenities like hair & body wash, and bar soap.
The showerhead is detachable, so we were able to use our own travel filter,
and they provided one large towel and one small towel per person.
The toilet is located directly across from the shower room.
While it's a tiny bit inconvenient to head over to the shower room just to wash your hands afterwards,
it was a lifesaver in the mornings because one of us could use the toilet
even while another friend was taking a shower.
On top of that, Hotel Adlerhof
offers bicycle rentals!
Half day: €8 / Full day: €12
Since there were three of us and the triple rooms were sold out,
we reserved the quadruple room, which cost us ~$176.
But if you check the rates for their standard Twin Room option
across different booking platforms, they look something like this:

Agoda was the cheapest among the four sites,
and even when I was booking, Agoda offered the best rate!
When planning a trip, I always compare prices
across different platforms before booking,
and Agoda often turns out to be the most budget-friendly.
All four options shown are prices with breakfast included.
While opting out of breakfast makes the room slightly cheaper,
just grabbing a sandwich and coffee at a station cafe
costs around €20 for two people (approx. ~$19),
so paying just ~$8 to $10 more
to enjoy the hotel breakfast is definitely a better deal.

And let's talk about the breakfast, which I absolutely loved!
Breakfast is served from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
I was so glad to see Korean included in the dining hours guide in the lobby.
When you check in, they give you breakfast coins,
which they said to bring with you when heading to the restaurant in the morning.
The vibe of the breakfast restaurant on the 1st floor was totally my style.
It had that classic, antique European restaurant vibe!
The blue velvet sofas and yellow wallpaper paired together beautifully.
The spread is prepared in a classic Western-style breakfast.
Cereal, butter, bread, yogurt, ham, and cheese
And they even have a waffle maker, so you can pour in the batter
and make fresh, warm waffles.
They also have strawberry, apricot, raspberry jams, and honey,
and since they are squeeze tubes, it felt super hygienic.
There are also fresh fruits, bell peppers, and a wide variety of tea bags.
There are also eggs to get your morning protein boost,
and it was so cool that you could boil them or use the scramble machine next to them
to make freshly scrambled eggs!
The coffee machine also has plenty of options, giving you a great selection.

Toasted bread with butter, topped with savory ham and cheese—
it’s such a simple combination, but it tasted absolutely amazing!
The colors in the breakfast room were so incredibly lovely
that I just had to snap a few photos while sipping my morning coffee! haha
Hotel Adlerhof is located a 6-minute walk from Salzburg Central Station. Situated at the hub of the train station and city transportation, it is highly convenient for traveling to nearby towns like St. Gilgen or city attractions.
The toilet and the shower room are separated. The shower room is equipped with a sink, a hairdryer, and amenities like hair and body shampoo, making it great for saving preparation time when multiple people are staying.
Yes, the hotel offers a bicycle rental service. The fee is 8 euros for a half-day and 12 euros for a full day.
Breakfast is available from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM in the dining room on the 1st floor, and you must bring the breakfast coin you received at check-in. It offers Western-style menus such as bread, cereal, ham, and cheese, along with a waffle maker and a scrambled egg machine for you to make your own.
You can book a twin room for its lowest price at ~$95 via Agoda. This price includes breakfast, and it is more cost-effective to book with the hotel breakfast included rather than eating out at an external cafe.
