If you're exploring Austria by rental car, finding the right spot, understanding the fees, and discovering discount hacks for Salzburg's Old Town can save you a lot of hassle and cash. Let's get into it!

Salzburg's Old Town is largely a pedestrian-only zone, meaning you can't drive directly in. The trick is to park nearby and explore on foot. We'll share our top parking recommendations, including the spot we personally used, and compare other convenient options around the Old Town.

1. Salzburg Old Town Parking: Locations & Fees Comparison

First off, while Salzburg's Old Town boasts numerous parking garages, we're focusing on the most popular and conveniently located options that offer easy access to the main attractions.

Many visitors opt for parking garages #1 and #2. It's important to note that these are essentially two sections (A and B) of the same large garage.

We highly recommend this option as it offers the most affordable rates, boasts a generous capacity, and is perfectly situated for exploring the Old Town on foot.

Parking garage #3 is ideal if you're primarily visiting Mirabell Gardens (a famous 'Sound of Music' filming location) before heading into the Old Town.

Garage #4 is perfect for those looking to explore the shops and restaurants on the right bank of the Old Town, particularly around Linzer Gasse.

Its location right at the entrance to the Old Town made exploring incredibly convenient.

As soon as you exit the garage, you're greeted with views of Salzburg Cathedral and Hohensalzburg Fortress. Getreidegasse, the famous shopping street, is also just about a 5-minute walk away.

What truly surprised us was the unique entrance and exit experience. As you can see in the photos above, you navigate through a maze-like tunnel that was once a historic mine!

It's been fascinatingly remodeled, now featuring vibrant advertising displays that make the walk surprisingly entertaining.

Another great perk: there are free restrooms inside the garage, perfect for a quick stop before you head out to explore!

A couple of quick tips: always keep your parking ticket handy, and since the garage is quite large and maze-like, it's a good idea to snap a photo of your parking spot to help you remember where you left your car!

3. Salzburg Old Town Parking Discount Tip

Here's a fantastic money-saving hack! After parking at our recommended garage, make a purchase at any participating restaurant, cafe, or souvenir shop in Salzburg's Old Town. Present your parking ticket, and they'll 'punch' it for you.

Look for signs that say 'Parkschein Lochung' (parking ticket punching) near the entrance of stores. Most establishments in the Old Town are affiliated with this program, so your discount is usually guaranteed.

It might seem too simple – they just punch a small hole in your ticket – but don't doubt it! When you go to the automated payment machine, the discount is automatically applied. We used our travel wallet card without any issues, and it worked perfectly.
