Hong Kong to Shenzhen Train 2026: West Kowloon Guide

While most travelers heading out of Hong Kong only think of taking a ferry to Macau, the booming tech metropolis of Shenzhen is actually the perfect destination for an exciting day trip!

Today, I am going to share my complete guide and personal experience on taking the high-speed train from Hong Kong's West Kowloon Station to Shenzhen's Futian Station.

First things first: the train ride from Hong Kong to Shenzhen takes a mere 15 minutes. It is blazingly fast!

Now, let's walk through exactly how to navigate from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station all the way to Futian Station in Shenzhen.

📍 Crucial Tips for Taking the Train to Shenzhen:

✅ West Kowloon Station is unique because it houses both the Hong Kong departure immigration and the China arrival immigration checkpoints under one roof. Because you are crossing an international border, the customs process can take a significant amount of time.

Therefore, I highly recommend arriving at West Kowloon Station at least 1 hour before your scheduled departure time!

We had tickets for the 9:00 AM train, so we caught a taxi and arrived at the station around 8:00 AM. Even though we traveled in early May during a busy holiday weekend, arriving an hour early gave us plenty of breathing room.

If you take a taxi, you will likely be dropped off at level B1. From there, simply follow the overhead signs pointing toward Departures.

As you follow the departure signs, you will eventually see a light blue sign that reads Staff assistance.

Head into this lane and have your passport ready to show the staff!

After completing the real-name verification process on level B1, you will need to head down to level B3 to clear immigration and customs.

International travelers should follow the red line toward the "Visitor counter" to complete the Hong Kong departure process.

Immediately after, you will go through the entry procedures for mainland China. One of the coolest parts of this station is that you can actually see the painted border line separating Hong Kong and China right on the floor! It is definitely a fun photo op.

We found that the lines for locals were quite long, but the queue for international visitors was surprisingly short, so we breezed through much faster than expected.

Once you are through both immigration checkpoints, you will enter the massive departure waiting area. West Kowloon Station's sheer scale is truly impressive.

Keep a close eye on the clock: the boarding gates open exactly 15 minutes before departure and close strictly 5 minutes before. Make sure you are lined up at your gate in time.

Our train was G914, and we were instructed to board through Gate 7B.

Here is a crucial detail for riding Chinese high-speed trains: there are no paper tickets. Your passport acts as your ticket! You simply scan your passport at the turnstiles to enter. Do not pack your passport away!

The high-speed train from Hong Kong to Shenzhen is incredibly modern and comfortable, similar to a bullet train. The economy class features a standard 2x3 seating configuration.

We even spotted a snack cart making the rounds! They sell cold beer, chips, and other light refreshments. If you are taking a longer train journey deeper into China, it is a fun amenity to take advantage of.

Before we knew it, we arrived at Futian Station in Shenzhen in just 15 minutes! It felt slightly surreal to cross an international border and arrive in a totally different mega-city in the time it takes to drink a cup of coffee.
