Why is the Octopus Card a Must-Have?

Hong Kong's public transit system is world-class.
Taking the MTR (subway), buses, and iconic double-decker trams
is often much faster—and significantly cheaper—than getting stuck in traffic in a taxi.
But buying single-journey tickets with cash every time is a massive hassle.
That's exactly why virtually every traveler relies on
the Octopus Card.

✔ What can you do with it?
Ride the MTR, buses, and trams
Pay at convenience stores, drugstores, cafes, and bakeries
Cover admission fees at select tourist spots
Similar to London's Oyster card or New York's OMNY,
it seamlessly combines transport and retail payments.
It genuinely made my entire Hong Kong trip incredibly smooth.
How to Buy Your Octopus Card
While you can purchase an Octopus Card
in person when you land at the airport,
pre-booking it online before your trip is a total game-changer.
When you buy it in advance online:
It's ready to use the second you land
You skip the notoriously long ticket queues
It comes pre-loaded with a deposit and starting balance
You can apply online discount codes to save money!

By reserving ahead, you simply walk up to
the designated redemption booth at the airport,
grab your card with the deposit and balance already loaded,
and head straight to the city.
Buying it on-site usually costs a bit more,
and waiting in line just to load cash onto it after a long flight...
is exhausting. Do yourself a favor and book it early.
Octopus Card Prices & Deposit

The standard Octopus Card
includes a basic deposit of HK$50 (approx. $6.50 USD),
and you can top it up with whatever amount you need.
✔ Tourist Card Options
Deposit + HK$50 Pre-loaded Balance
Deposit + HK$50 Pre-loaded Balance + Airport Express (AEL) Ticket
We opted for the standard pre-loaded version.
Since we were traveling as a couple, we made sure to get
two cards—one for each of us.
Trust me, everyone needs their own card.
Trying to share one card by passing it back and forth on a crowded tram or bus is a logistical nightmare!

Over our 4-day, 3-night trip, we used it constantly for the subway, buses, and trams,
grabbed bottled water at 7-Eleven, and paid for our morning coffees.
The starting balance was perfect to get us going.
If you start running low,
you can easily top up at any convenience store or MTR station.
I recommend starting with around HK$150 to HK$200
for a few days of exploring.
How to Use the Octopus Card

Using the card is incredibly intuitive.
✔ Transit Tapping Rules
MTR (Subway): Tap when entering AND exiting
Tram: Tap ONLY when getting off
Bus: Tap ONLY when getting on
Every time you tap, the digital screen will display the fare deducted
and your remaining balance, so you always know
exactly where you stand.
Here's a cool feature: if you accidentally run out of funds,
the card allows you to go into a negative balance once (covered by your deposit).
The negative amount is just deducted the next time you top up. No stress!

When paying at cafes or convenience stores,
just tap the card against the reader,
and the payment processes instantly. It's wildly convenient.
I kept mine tucked in the back of my phone case for the whole trip,
making it super easy to whip out whenever I needed it.

Secret Octopus Discount Hack
Here is an insider tip I absolutely loved!
If you ride the famous Mid-Levels Escalator, keep an eye out for the "Octopus Fare Saver" machine
located about halfway up. Just tap your card against it,
and you'll instantly get a HK$2 discount on your next MTR ride that day.
You'll see all the locals tapping as they walk by,
so we made sure to tap ours every day to score those little savings.
How to Get an Octopus Card Refund

When your trip is over, don't forget to return your card
to get your initial deposit and any leftover balance refunded.
✔ Where to Refund
MTR Train Ticket Booths at Hong Kong International Airport
Since you'll likely use the card right up until you leave,
doing this at the airport before your flight is by far the easiest option!

Just walk up to the Train Ticket booth and say, "Refund, please."
The attendant will take your card, scan it for the balance,
deduct a small HK$11 handling fee,
and hand you the rest back in cold, hard cash.
✔ Refund Math
(HK$50 Deposit + Remaining Balance) - HK$11 Fee
= Total Cash Refund
We actually had quite a bit left over,
so we used our refunded cash to grab some pre-flight coffees at the airport.

Because Hong Kong's transit infrastructure is so phenomenal,
relying on the MTR, buses, and trams is genuinely
the fastest and most budget-friendly way to see the city.
That makes the Octopus Card an undeniable travel essential.
