When planning a trip to Hong Kong,
one of the first things you'll need to figure out
is how to get from the airport to the city center!
If you're traveling with heavy luggage
or have kids in tow,
a fast and comfortable transfer is an absolute must.
That's exactly why so many travelers choose the
Hong Kong Airport Express Line (AEL).
Got questions about taking the AEL?
We've got all the answers right here :)
1. What is the Hong Kong Airport Express (AEL)?
The Hong Kong AEL is a high-speed train
connecting Hong Kong International Airport directly to the downtown area.

Zooming at top speeds of up to 84 mph,
this train gets you from the Airport to Hong Kong Station
in just 24 minutes!!
(Airport → Kowloon Station: 22 mins / Airport → Tsing Yi Station: 14 mins)
The seats are spacious and comfortable,
free Wi-Fi is provided on board,
and you can even charge your phone.
It's the perfect way to relax
and recharge right after a long flight.
By taking the Airport Express,
you can reach the city quickly and reliably.
And of course, it's just as convenient for your return trip.

2. AEL Route & Stations
The train stops at the following stations:
Airport Station
Tsing Yi Station
Kowloon Station
Hong Kong Station

Each station seamlessly connects to the MTR, buses, and taxis,
making it the ultimate starting point
for your Hong Kong adventure.
3. Hong Kong AEL Ticket Prices
If you buy your tickets
on-site at the counter,
the standard fare is HKD 205 (Round-trip) / HKD 115 (One-way).
(Based on Hong Kong Station)
Octopus Card VS. On-Site Purchase
Item | Pros | Cons |
Octopus Card | Usable for transit & convenience stores citywide | Initial deposit required, manual refund needed at end of trip |
On-site Purchase | Ready for immediate use | No discounts, potential long queues |
Hong Kong's essential transit pass,
the Octopus Card, can also be used
to ride the AEL.
You can easily use it just like a regular subway card
by tapping it at the turnstiles.
However, this only works
if you have enough balance loaded onto the card.
If your Octopus Card balance is low,
you'll need to top it up before you can ride.
Since an Octopus Card is a must-have for Hong Kong anyway,
it's definitely worth looking into.
Buying tickets on-site offers zero discounts,
and you'll have to wait in line to purchase them,
which can eat up precious vacation time if it's crowded.
That's why the smarter and more convenient move
is to buy your tickets online in advance.
✅ It's significantly cheaper than on-site prices
✅ Just scan your digital voucher at the gate and you're in
There's really no reason not to book ahead!
Here is a quick price comparison across different platforms
when booking your AEL tickets online.

it's definitely worth checking out.

4. My AEL Experience
I used a one-way AEL ticket
to get from Kowloon Station to the Airport.

The train cars are so spacious
that I didn't even need to take my toddler
out of the travel stroller.
Plus, the dedicated luggage racks made things super easy.
Boarding was an absolute breeze—
I just scanned the mobile voucher QR code
I received after booking directly at the turnstile.

When you arrive at the Airport Station,
it connects directly into the terminal.
Even while juggling a kid and all our bags,
getting to the departure hall was completely stress-free.

Trains run frequently,
about every 10 minutes,
so you don't have to panic if you miss one.
After dealing with heavy traffic
in a taxi on the way to Kowloon Station earlier,
I was *so* relieved
I chose the AEL for the airport run.
It was incredibly convenient.
5. Why the AEL is Essential for Hong Kong

When planning a Hong Kong itinerary,
airport transfers are
so easy to overlook.
Getting off a flight exhausted,
only to wait in a massive taxi line,
figure out directions, or fumble with ticket machines
is the last thing you want.
By booking your AEL ticket in advance,
you save money
and skip the lines with a quick QR scan,
ensuring the start and end of your trip
are completely relaxed.

Especially if you're traveling with kids, have heavy luggage,
or are a business traveler on a tight schedule,
there is simply no better transit option than the AEL.
Get your AEL tickets sorted early,
and your entire Hong Kong trip
will kick off smoothly and stress-free!
