New Zealand Hobbiton North Island Tour Review

If you're a nature lover, a trip to New Zealand is an absolute must! And if you're wondering where to go on your North Island adventure, I can't recommend the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour enough. This iconic filming location for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series has preserved the actual movie sets, making it a highly sought-after destination for travelers worldwide.

501 Buckland Road, Matamata 3472, New Zealand
The Hobbiton Movie Set is located in Matamata, about a 3-hour drive (roughly 100 miles) from Auckland. While the 6-hour round trip might seem long, the stunning scenery unfolding outside your window makes the journey anything but boring.
Is a Guided Tour Essential for Hobbiton?

You can't explore the Hobbiton Movie Set on your own; individual visits are not permitted. You'll need to join a group and travel by dedicated bus with a guide.
Since I didn't rent a car for my North Island trip, I booked a full-day tour package.

If you plan to drive to Matamata with a rental car, I recommend booking your admission ticket through the official website and then joining the official guided tour bus from there.
Currently, a direct admission ticket from the official website costs 130 New Zealand Dollars (approximately ~$75 USD). However, you can often find better deals through the link below for around ~$74 USD.

New Zealand tours can be quite pricey, so if you're looking for the most budget-friendly option, I'd recommend the English-guided tour. However, if English isn't your strongest suit, or if you're traveling with parents, the Korean-guided tour might be a better fit.
Note that the Korean-guided Hobbiton tour requires a minimum of two participants.
Each Hobbiton tour slot has limited capacity, so it's wise to book at least 2-3 weeks in advance to secure your spot, especially if traveling in late 2026 or early 2027.
You can also combine the Hobbiton tour with a trip to the Waitomo Caves. If you're fascinated by glowworms, this combo tour is highly recommended!
Since I prioritize value, I opted for the English-guided tour.
My New Zealand Hobbiton North Island Tour Experience

I visited New Zealand in August, which is the off-peak season, and ended up having a private tour all to myself! Talk about luck!

After a three-hour drive, we arrived at the Hobbiton Movie Set in Matamata. The tour officially begins by boarding a dedicated Hobbiton tour bus with your guide.

The day I visited was unfortunately overcast, which was a bit of a bummer. But don't worry, if the weather isn't great, they offer free umbrella rentals!

The Hobbiton village was shrouded in a mystical fog. Seeing the scenes from the movie come to life before my eyes was truly incredible! During my visit, there was one guide leading a group of about 15 tourists.

We even got to see the famous Bilbo's house! Our guide shared a fascinating tidbit: the tree above it is actually artificial. Who knew?

If you're a die-hard Lord of the Rings fan, this tour is guaranteed to exceed your expectations. Just being at the filming location fills you with such excitement!

After a delightful stroll through Hobbiton village, we enjoyed a complimentary drink. The tour concludes with a visit to the gift shop, where you can pick up some Middle-earth souvenirs.
