Thao Dien Ho Chi Minh: Authentic Street Food Breakfast Finds
Dive into the vibrant street food scene of Ho Chi Minh's Thao Dien district. Discover delicious, affordable breakfast options like crab soup, banh mi, and sticky rice!

Thao Dien in Ho Chi Minh City is a fantastic place to live. The Masteri Apartments offer great amenities like swimming pools and gyms, and right across the street, Vincom Mall Thao Dien has a WinMart for groceries and a variety of popular brands for convenient shopping.
Just a short bridge crossing from An Phu Station, you'll find Mega Market, often dubbed Vietnam's Costco. It's perfect for stocking up on gifts when friends visit or for buying fresh meat and seafood. Thao Dien also boasts a plethora of trendy cafes and restaurants. However, since it's a popular expat neighborhood, the prices can sometimes feel a bit steep, almost comparable to back home.
This often made me wonder if I was truly experiencing authentic Vietnamese life, as the bustling street stalls and traditional eateries I'd seen in District 1 seemed scarce here.

But then, a revelation! If you venture out in Thao Dien early in the morning, you'll discover a hidden world of street vendors and traditional stalls that pop up for just a few hours before packing away.
From fragrant crab soup and classic Banh Mi to savory chicken rice, sticky rice variations, and even congee (a type of rice porridge) that I just discovered – the options are incredible!
Most of these Thao Dien street food vendors and traditional eateries open bright and early, usually wrapping up by 8 AM or 9 AM. You've got to be an early bird to catch the best bites!
I went out around 7:50 AM today, and sadly, the congee was already sold out. Next time, I'm setting an even earlier alarm!

A Banh Mi for 25,000 VND (~$1) and crab soup for 20,000 VND (~$1).
This, right here, is the real taste of Vietnamese life!
After living in Ho Chi Minh City for a while, I can't believe it took me this long to discover these incredible flavors!

📍 Starbucks Thao Dien Area
21 Thảo Điền, An Khánh, Hồ Chí Minh 70000, Vietnam
You'll find these fantastic street food stalls opposite the Thao Dien Starbucks, near FIDECO Riverview. The wide sidewalk in front of FIDECO Riverview seems to be a popular spot for vendors offering crab soup, Banh Mi, chicken rice, and more.
I first spotted the crab soup stall during an early morning walk. They served it in plastic containers, so I made a mental note to bring my reusable tumbler next time. The second time I tried, it was sold out, as they were serving the last customer. So, today, I finally came prepared with my tumbler!

You can get crab soup for 20,000 VND (~$1) or 25,000 VND (~$1). The basic crab soup is 20,000 VND, while the version with century egg (pidan) added is 25,000 VND!
They also offer freshly squeezed orange juice for 10,000 VND - 20,000 VND (~$1 - ~$1). Small bottles of soy milk are available too, also for 10,000 VND (~$1).
Black coffee is 10,000 VND (~$1) and a latte is 15,000 VND (~$1). I'll definitely be grabbing a coffee with my breakfast tomorrow!

When I handed over my tumbler, the vendor happily filled it up.
The crab soup was piping hot in my stainless steel container, steam wafting out as soon as I opened the lid!
If you're like me and prefer not to eat hot food from plastic, remember to bring your own stainless steel tumbler or container. It's a great way to enjoy your meal sustainably!

This crab soup is truly something special, reminiscent of the delicious crab soups you'd find in high-end Asian restaurants. It's incredibly smooth, packed with mushrooms and egg, and even comes with two quail eggs!

Topped with fresh cilantro and real crab meat, you can also add a spicy chili pepper sauce to your liking. That chili kick is absolutely the secret ingredient! Next time, I'm asking for extra. This spicy crab soup is unbelievably delicious.
I can't wait to share this amazing flavor with family and friends visiting later this year, starting this October 2026!

Just five steps from the crab soup stall, you'll consistently find the Banh Mi and chicken rice vendors. Besides Xoi Ga Cha Xiu (savory sticky rice with chicken and char siu pork barbecue), they also sell sweet sticky rice, corn sticky rice, Bun Thit Nuong (grilled pork with vermicelli), and even vegetarian mixed noodles.

Chicken rice is a steal at 30,000 VND (~$1).

They scoop the sticky rice hot from a large pot, drizzle it with soy sauce, and then pile on the chicken – a whole drumstick, just torn off and added to your plate! I'm definitely going to try this next week and will share another Ho Chi Minh breakfast review.
And don't forget my Banh Mi, lovingly prepared with pâté, fresh vegetables, and savory meats!

Carrying my tumbler full of crab soup and my delicious Banh Mi, I happily made my way back home.

📍 Don Chicken Thao Dien
02 Thảo Điền, An Khánh, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam

In front of Don Chicken Thao Dien, you'll also find vendors selling Bun Thit Nuong and a variety of sticky rice dishes (Xoi).
One stall specializes in Hanoi-style sticky rice (Xoi), which is a traditional Northern Vietnamese dish often wrapped in banana leaves. You can find unique variations like:
- Sticky rice with mung bean paste and fried onions, or corn sticky rice
- Peanut sticky rice, black bean sticky rice
- Lotus seed sticky rice, or sticky rice colored red with Gac fruit

They also offer Bun Thit Nuong, a Vietnamese vermicelli noodle dish topped with charcoal-grilled pork and spring rolls, as well as Banh Duc. Banh Duc is a dish featuring thin, chewy rice flour sheets served with ham (cha lua) or vegetables, dipped in a savory fish sauce.
I'm definitely eager to try Banh Duc next!
I want to taste every single dish from these incredible traditional street stalls in Ho Chi Minh City's Thao Dien – it's a true breakfast feast!
