After exploring Ho Chi Minh's bustling Aeon Mall, we decided to treat ourselves to a unique dessert experience: rolled ice cream from KEOHOLO Hulu. In Vietnam, this delightful treat is known as Kem Cuộn.

Kem Cuộn, or rolled ice cream, literally translates to 'Kem' (ice cream) and 'Cuộn' (to roll). It's an artisanal dessert made fresh on a super-chilled metal plate, where the liquid base is spread, mixed with ingredients, and then skillfully scraped into rolls.

Initially, we considered trying Tanghulu, a popular candied fruit skewer. But when we saw the hawthorn berry Tanghulu, we worried it might be too sweet (haha!), so we pivoted to ice cream instead.

It seems this Tanghulu spot also offers rolled ice cream! KEOHOLO Hulu is a Vietnamese brand that launched in 2024, but has quickly expanded. By 2026, you can find their franchise stores in food courts across major shopping centers like Aeon Mall and Vincom Mall. There are already about 5-6 locations in Ho Chi Minh City alone.

Since strawberries can be a bit pricier in Vietnam, I opted for the strawberry flavor!

I'd seen this fresh fruit rolled ice cream at the Hoi An night market and frequently on Reels and Shorts, but this was my very first time trying it in Vietnam!

The process is mesmerizing! They pour the ice cream base onto the freezing cold pan, then add fresh fruit ingredients like mango, strawberry, durian, or coconut. Everything is chopped and mixed on the spot, then expertly scraped into delicate rolls with a spatula. Watching them prepare it right in front of you is half the fun!

Once completed, the ice cream rolls are neatly placed into a paper cup. To truly savor Kem Cuộn, or rolled ice cream, you've got to enjoy it quickly, while it's still perfectly rolled and hasn't melted. It's best to slurp it down before it loses its shape!

I loved it so much at Aeon Mall that I tried it twice more at the Phu Quoc Night Market. There, vendors were selling them for 40,000 VND and 30,000 VND respectively. However, they seemed to stretch a single strawberry to make a larger portion, which meant the strawberry flavor wasn't as rich. After those night market attempts, I found myself craving the superior rolled ice cream from KEOHOLO at Aeon Mall even more!

Curious about its origins, I did some digging. Rolled ice cream first appeared as a street food in Thai night markets around 2009. The captivating process—spreading the ice cream base and various ingredients onto a metal plate chilled to below 0°F (approx. -18°C), chopping them up, flattening them, and then rolling them into perfect spirals—quickly made it an SNS sensation. It rapidly spread across Southeast Asia, then to the US and Europe.

In Vietnam, it gained popularity in the early 2010s and has since become a staple dessert at street markets and shopping mall food courts. While the KEOHOLO brand store at Aeon Mall was indeed a bit pricier, costing about 10,000-20,000 VND more than street vendors, the superior hygiene and generous amount of fresh fruit made it far more delicious than the night market Kem Cuộn. I'll definitely be heading back to Aeon Mall for another taste next time!
