Planning a trip to Hiroshima and
wondering if you should get a Tabipass?
If you've been looking into tourist pass prices or how to save money,
then this post is for you!
To give you the answer upfront:
if you're planning to visit Miyajima,
getting a Tabipass is definitely worth it.
The cost of the pass almost pays for itself
with just the round-trip transportation to Miyajima.

I'm Daisyha, your travel blogger!
I personally used the 1-day pass
and I'll break down exactly how much I saved
with a detailed calculation for you.
What exactly is the Tabipass?

The Hiroshima Tabipass is
a pass that allows you unlimited rides on
the Hiroden streetcars and
the ferry to Miyajima.
Item | Details |
Coverage | Hiroden Tram + Miyajima Ferry |
Types | 1-day, 2-day, 3-day |
Price (1-day pass) | Airport: ~$7 / Online: ~$6 |
Where to Buy | Airport Tourist Information Center / Online |

I used the 1-day pass,
and since I only used it on the day I went to Miyajima,
it was perfectly sufficient.
Buying Online Saves You Money

If you buy the Tabipass at the airport,
it's around ~$7.
However, if you book it online in advance,
it's in the early ~$6 range,
allowing you to buy it at a cheaper price.

Buy it online before you depart,
and then once you land at Hiroshima Airport
and clear immigration,
you can exchange it at the Tourist Information Center.
The Tourist Information Center is located inside Hiroshima Airport,
and since Hiroshima Airport is quite small,
you'll find it right as you exit the arrival gate.
Just show them the QR code from your online booking,
and they'll exchange it for your ticket right away.

Exchanging it right at the airport
makes your travel smoother, as you can start using it
immediately for your journey into the city.

I Calculated How Much You Can Save

This is what you're most curious about, right?
Here's how much it costs to go
round-trip to Miyajima without the Tabipass.
Segment | Cost (1 person round trip) |
Hiroden (City Center~Miyajimaguchi) | 480 JPY |
Ferry (Round trip) | 400 JPY |
Miyajima Island Entry Fee | 100 JPY |
Total | About 980 JPY |
Just one round trip to Miyajima alone
costs about 980 JPY.
But a 1-day Tabipass online is in the low ~$7 range,
so just one round trip to Miyajima
almost covers the cost of the pass.

If you take the Hiroden a few more times in the city center,
everything after that is pure profit.
I combined the Miyajima round trip
with city travel,
so I **saved about ~$4**.

Just one thing to note: the Miyajima Island Entry Fee of 100 JPY
still needs to be paid separately, even with the Tabipass.
A parasol is a must on your Miyajima day

If you're going to Miyajima with the Tabipass,
there's one thing you absolutely must bring:
**a parasol.**
Miyajima is an island,
so the sun beats down with direct sunlight.

As you walk around to see the Torii gate
and explore the Omotesando shopping street,
there's hardly any shade,
so without a parasol, you'll be completely exposed to the scorching sun.

I brought an ultra-light parasol,
which also doubled as an umbrella,
preparing me for the island's fickle weather.
When you head to Miyajima,
definitely pack a parasol that can also be used as an umbrella.
But it depends on your accommodation location

Here's a really honest tip:
the Tabipass isn't always the best deal.
My accommodation was right in front of Peace Memorial Park,
so I walked everywhere in the city
except for the day I went to Miyajima.

That's why I only bought the Tabipass
for the day I visited Miyajima.
On all other days,
I didn't spend anything on transportation.
If your accommodation is well-located,
walking around the city and only using a 1-day pass
for your Miyajima trip is the most economical approach.
That's why accommodation matters

If you want to save on transportation,
choosing accommodation in the city center
makes a bigger difference than you might think.

I stayed at the Livemax Hiroshima Peace Park-mae,
which was a 1-minute walk from Peace Memorial Park
and close to the Hondori shopping street.

Thanks to its location, I walked all over the city,
and my transportation costs were covered entirely by one Tabipass
on the day I went to Miyajima.
With its great location and excellent value for money,
it was perfect for a solo or duo traveler.

Who This Pass Is For

If you're planning a trip to Miyajima,
getting the Tabippass is definitely a smart move.
Just the round trip to Miyajima alone
covers the cost of the pass,
and if you include city travel,
you'll save even more!
Things to Keep in Mind

If your accommodation is far from the city center
or if you're not visiting Miyajima,
the pass might actually cost you more than it saves.
Be sure to check your itinerary before deciding!
The Miyajima entry tax of 100 JPY
is separate from the pass.
Booking online is cheaper,
so make sure to buy it in advance before you leave!

Based on my personal experience using the Hiroshima Tabippass,
I've even calculated the potential savings for you.

Even if you only use it for one day to go to Miyajima,
you'll save around ~$4,
so if Miyajima is on your itinerary,
buy it online in advance.
Oh, and don't forget to pack a parasol!
