Hinoaji Ilsan Lafesta Review: Best Solo Dining Spot
Discover Hinoaji, a hidden Japanese gem in Ilsan Lafesta. From crispy tonkatsu to rich curry udon, it's the ultimate spot for solo diners and casual dates.
I recently visited Hinoaji, a fantastic Japanese comfort food spot located in the heart of Lafesta, Ilsan. Although it opened relatively recently, I had been passing by it constantly, always telling myself I needed to try it. I finally made my way inside to see if it lives up to the neighborhood curiosity.

How to Find Hinoaji

Hinoaji Ilsan Lafesta is about a 10-minute walk (roughly 0.4 miles) from Exit 2 of Jeongbalsan Station. It is situated right in the center of the Lafesta shopping complex. To be honest, Lafesta has seen quieter days lately, with quite a few vacant storefronts nearby. Since the building is over 20 years old, the surrounding area can look a bit dated, which often keeps tourists from exploring deeper.

On top of that, a massive concrete pillar right in front of the restaurant makes it a bit hard to spot at first glance. Operating a business in this spot must be challenging, so I was rooting for them ever since they opened. I always make it a point to support local spots that bring fresh energy to the neighborhood.
The Vibe Inside

Here is a look inside Hinoaji. Even though I visited during an off-peak afternoon hour, there was a decent crowd. Interestingly, a large portion of the customers were dining alone, just like me. It's the perfect casual layout for solo diners or couples looking for a quick, pressure-free meal.

The interior is clean and minimalist, with large, appetizing illustrations of ramen and udon on the walls to get your stomach rumbling. Let's take a look at the menu.
The Menu

The menu kicks off with their signature Tantanmen set. More than half of the options are ramen sets paired with crispy pork cutlets (tonkatsu). For rice lovers, they offer Katsudon, Gyudon, and Kimchi Katsu Nabe. While I usually gravitate toward Kimchi Katsu Nabe, I wanted to try something a little different today, so I opted for the Curry Udon Set.

The Curry Udon Set wasn't on the printed menu, but you can easily order it via the self-service kiosk. They've also upgraded their pork loin from Jeju black pork to premium "Baekdon" white pork loin for an even juicier bite.

It has been years since I last had curry udon. Served alongside a freshly fried tonkatsu, the presentation looked incredibly hearty and filling.

This was an absolute hit! I'm so glad I ordered this. The bowl is massive—much larger than it looks in photos—and the portion size is extremely generous.

The tonkatsu was perfectly crispy and flavorful. While I usually pair ramen with tonkatsu, I was surprised by how incredibly well it pairs with curry udon. The dipping sauce portion was a bit small, but you can always ask the friendly staff for a refill.

Sometimes Japanese curry can feel too salty or heavy on its own, but Hinoaji's curry is perfectly balanced. You can easily eat it like a soup without feeling overwhelmed. The udon noodles were wonderfully springy and chewy. It felt like an incredibly satisfying meal that was worth every penny.

You might occasionally notice a slight pinkish hue in the pork. Don't worry—this is completely normal! It is a natural reaction of myoglobin in high-quality pork when cooked perfectly, meaning it is fully safe, tender, and extra juicy.

Here's a heartwarming touch: every Sunday, they offer a free drink (1 per 2 people) or 2 free croquettes for customers who visit after attending a local church, cathedral, or temple. I love how inclusive they are, welcoming guests of all faiths with open arms.

That wraps up my review of Hinoaji, a fantastic Japanese comfort food spot in Ilsan Lafesta. It is a completely pressure-free environment for solo dining and an easy, delicious choice for a casual date. While the nearby Western Dom area has plenty of famous tonkatsu spots, Lafesta has been lacking in comparison. I am thrilled to see such a quality Japanese eatery holding down the fort here.
