As a global travel blogger, I'm always on the hunt for authentic culinary experiences, and when in China, lamb skewers are an absolute must-try. My love affair with Henjiuyiqian (很久以前羊肉串) began during my trip to Shanghai last year (2025).

The flavors exceeded all my expectations, leaving such a lasting impression that I vowed to revisit on my next journey to China.

So, during my recent Beijing adventure, discovering a Henjiuyiqian branch in the bustling Wangfujing APM Mall was a sign! I didn't hesitate and made a beeline straight for it.

1. Location & Waiting

The specific Henjiuyiqian location I visited is nestled inside Wangfujing APM Mall.

It's perfectly situated for a post-stroll meal after exploring Wangfujing Street, making it a convenient addition to any sightseeing itinerary. I arrived right at opening time, 11 AM, and was seated immediately with no wait.

However, by around noon, the lunch rush began, and a line quickly formed, so consider arriving early if you want to avoid a queue.

The restaurant interior was clean, modern, and spacious, with tables comfortably spaced out for a pleasant dining experience. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, adding to the overall positive atmosphere!

2. Menu & Prices

Henjiuyiqian offers a wide array of options beyond just lamb skewers, including lamb ribs, beef skewers, various vegetables, and delicious side dishes.

My dining companion and I focused on lamb skewers, ordering several along with a variety of tempting side dishes. For two people, we ate our fill, and the total bill came to 268.3 CNY (approximately ~$44).

While this might be a bit pricier than your average street-side lamb skewer stall, the clean, modern ambiance of a branded restaurant and the high quality of the food made it absolutely worth it. I left feeling completely satisfied with the value!

Personally, my absolute favorite dishes were the unmarinated, original lamb skewers and the grilled eggplant (烤去皮茄子).

The original lamb skewers truly allowed the natural flavor of the lamb to shine. There was virtually no gamey taste, and the meat was incredibly juicy. They were so delicious, they didn't even need extra seasoning!

The grilled eggplant was also a delightful surprise. The eggplant was perfectly tender, and the savory seasoning complemented it beautifully. Paired with the lamb skewers, it was a fantastic combination.

The Chinese cucumber salad (拍黄瓜) also played its part, offering a refreshing, clean palate cleanser that cut through the richness of the lamb perfectly.

If I visit again, these dishes will definitely be on my order without a second thought!

3. Honest Review

Having had such a memorable experience in Shanghai last year (2025), I arrived in Beijing with high expectations, and I'm thrilled to report that the taste remained consistently excellent!

The lamb skewers were tender, incredibly juicy, and perfectly grilled – crispy on the outside, succulent on the inside, with no unpleasant gamey flavor. It was immediately clear why this spot is so highly recommended by so many.

What truly impressed me was the consistent quality across different branches. Knowing that I can enjoy the same fantastic taste, no matter which Henjiuyiqian I visit, is a huge plus.

My positive experience in Shanghai was beautifully echoed in Beijing, and I wouldn't hesitate to visit Henjiuyiqian again on future trips to China.
