A must-visit spot on any Hanoi trip,

Bun Cha Huong Lien.

After former U.S. President Obama's visit in 2016,

it skyrocketed in popularity, even earning a spot in the 2023 Michelin Guide.

It has since become a bustling eatery with a constant stream of tourists.

Location

It's about a 20-minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, so accessibility is pretty good.

There are plenty of cafes nearby, and a leisurely stroll to the lake or St. Joseph's Cathedral

after your meal is a great way to digest.

You can easily find it by searching for 'Obama Bun Cha' on Google Maps,

so taking a taxi is also a convenient option if your accommodation is further away.

Inside the Restaurant

In the past, there were often long queues during peak dinner hours,

but it seems they've expanded, as we were seated immediately without any wait.

The interior is actually quite compact.

It gets incredibly busy and loud with a huge number of tourists

(I'd estimate about 80% tourists, 20% locals).

Fortunately, each floor is equipped with powerful air conditioning,

so you won't have to worry about the heat.

Pictures of Obama are literally everywhere! You can't escape them, haha.

The restaurant has five floors, and we were guided to a table on the second floor via elevator.

The second floor is where former President Obama actually dined!

His exact tableware and table are preserved and displayed as an exhibit.

While the restaurant has been famous for a while, its recognition in the Michelin Guide in 2023 is quite recent,

a testament to its consistent quality and enduring flavor.

The Bun Cha that Obama ate costs 50,000 dong for a single serving,

which is approximately ~$2.

A set including Obama Bun Cha, Nem (fried seafood spring rolls), and Hanoi Beer

is priced at 120,000 dong, which is about ~$4.

Compared to other local Vietnamese eateries, it might seem a tad pricier,

but considering it's a major tourist attraction, I still think it's incredibly affordable.

The Obama Bun Cha Set

Since we were on a family trip,

we all ordered Hanoi Beer to start.

Honestly, I couldn't distinguish its taste from regular beer, but it was perfectly cold and delicious! Haha.

The Obama Bun Cha set arrived, featuring special Bun Cha, Nem (fried seafood spring rolls), a fresh assortment of greens (cilantro, various herbs, lettuce),

and Hanoi Beer.

Typically, Bun Cha is served with the meat and broth separately,

but here, the grilled pork comes already submerged in the broth.

While Bun Cha at most other Vietnamese restaurants serves cold broth and noodles, Huong Lien's Bun Cha was uniquely warm –

almost like a comforting noodle soup.

It definitely tasted different from the Bun Cha I'd had back home. The broth was incredibly deep, tangy, and flavorful, yet not overly strong, making it suitable even for children.

The grilled pork had a subtle smoky aroma, and the sauce was beautifully infused,

creating a harmonious blend when eaten with the noodles.

Personally, it was the best Bun Cha I tasted during my entire trip to Vietnam.

It's clear this restaurant wasn't just featured in the Michelin Guide simply because it was Obama's pick; the taste truly speaks for itself.

However, the Nem included in the set wasn't really to my liking.

Described as a fried seafood patty primarily made with crab, it had an ambiguous flavor – neither fully meaty nor truly seafood-like.

I wasn't the only one; my family members who tried it also found it unremarkable and didn't eat much of it.

It was somewhat more palatable when dipped in the nuoc cham sauce, though.

While it's undoubtedly a busy and chaotic restaurant,

you don't come here expecting a luxurious or sophisticated interior,

so it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

In fact, I appreciated that its simple interior has retained the authentic feel of a local Vietnamese eatery,

even after achieving such global fame.

Though made famous by President Obama's visit,

its flavor truly lives up to its reputation.

If you're planning a trip to Hanoi,

I highly recommend Bun Cha Huong Lien as a must-try restaurant!
