Vietnam, a beloved destination for travelers worldwide, experiences its distinct rainy season during June and July. While incredibly hot, the frequent downpours mean it's not always considered the ideal time for a visit.

However, I once traveled to Hanoi during this exact period due to scheduling constraints. And while it was undeniably scorching, I found that the rain often cleared quickly. After a downpour, there would be a temporary refreshing coolness, and the air would feel wonderfully clear, making it quite manageable to explore.

Below, I'll dive deeper into Hanoi's weather patterns for June and July, along with essential packing advice!

Dry Season: November - April / This period offers more pleasant weather with less rain, making it an ideal time for travel.

Rainy Season: May - October / Expect hot, humid conditions with frequent rainfall.

As you can see, June and July fall squarely within Vietnam's rainy season. While rain is common, it rarely lasts all day. Instead, you'll typically experience intense, short-lived downpours or tropical squalls.

In June, Hanoi typically sees average daytime high temperatures soar to 90-95°F (32-35°C) and often higher.

The frequent rainfall also means high humidity, making the "real feel" temperature significantly hotter than the actual reading. It can feel much more intense than a typical summer day in many Western countries.

The blue areas on the chart indicate days with a higher chance of rain, and you'll notice July generally has more rainy days than June. However, the average temperatures aren't dramatically different between the two months.

Of course, these are just predictions, and the weather can be unpredictable. Rain can start or stop suddenly. The good news is that these are typically quick tropical downpours, often lasting around an hour or less before clearing up.

What to Wear in Hanoi

Given Hanoi's hot and humid climate, especially compared to many Western regions, your wardrobe should focus on thin, breathable fabrics that wick away sweat and allow for maximum airflow.

For footwear, ditch the sneakers. Opt for sandals or Crocs that can handle sudden downpours and quickly dry, keeping your feet comfortable.

Even with light and minimal clothing, sunscreen is an absolute must. A wide-brimmed hat is also highly recommended to protect yourself from the intense sun.

If you're planning extensive outdoor activities, always carry a bottle of water to stay hydrated.

Essential Items to Pack

Since rain can strike at any moment, a portable umbrella and a lightweight raincoat are absolute must-haves for your Hanoi trip.

During my trip, we spent the first couple of days exploring indoor attractions and local eateries. On our last day, we embarked on a cruise tour, and wouldn't you know it, that's when we encountered the rain!

Luckily, the rain only fell while we were boarding the cruise. By the time we arrived at Sung Sot Cave and Titop Island Beach, it had cleared up completely, allowing us to enjoy our activities without any hindrance.

While visiting Hanoi during the dry season (November to April) is generally recommended, if June or July are your only options, I suggest aiming for early June before the peak heat and rain truly set in.

My personal takeaway from traveling during this period was that despite the rain, heat, and humidity, once the skies cleared, the vibrant green landscapes and fresh air were truly breathtaking. It's a city that reveals its unique charm even in its wetter months.
