My Honest Review, Paid by Me!
Hey there, fellow foodies and travel enthusiasts!
Today, I'm thrilled to share one of my absolute favorite takoyaki spots in Osaka, a place I return to again and again:
Umeda Hanatako
While it's already a well-known haunt for many international visitors, I truly believe Hanatako serves up some of the best takoyaki in Osaka. Seriously, it's a game-changer!
Traditional Osaka takoyaki is often characterized by its famously soft, almost gooey batter. If you've tried takoyaki in areas like Namba or Dotonbori, you might have experienced this melt-in-your-mouth texture. Personally, I prefer a bit more bite, something that holds its shape a little better while still being deliciously tender. That's where Hanatako shines!
What sets Hanatako apart? Their octopus pieces are incredibly generous, and I always go for the Negi-tako, which comes piled high with fresh green onions. It's a combination that keeps me coming back!

You'll find Hanatako conveniently located in Umeda. While takoyaki shops seem to pop up everywhere in Namba and Dotonbori, they're a bit rarer in Umeda. That's why Hanatako stands out as a famous must-try!
Umeda can be a bit of a maze, so finding your way might seem tricky at first. Here’s a simple trick: cross the street from Daimaru Department Store towards Hankyu Department Store. On your left, you'll spot an entrance marked "新梅田食堂街" (Shin-Umeda Shokudogai). This is your gateway to Hanatako!

When you arrive, you’ll notice the queue forms around a pillar, so don't just line up directly in front of the shop. Follow the line around the pillar!
A staff member will ask if you're taking out (take-out) or dining in (eat-in), as the lines are different. Just let them know your preference. I highly recommend dining in, even if the queue looks long! Many tourists, especially from Korea, often opt for take-out to avoid waiting, but trust me, the taste is noticeably better when enjoyed fresh in the shop!

While you're in line, a friendly staff member will hand you a menu. Take your time to decide before it's your turn to order. Good news: they have an English menu!
My go-to order is always the Negimayo (ネギマヨ) from the top right, with the classic Sauce (ソース) flavor. If you prefer something lighter, many people opt for the standard Takoyaki (たこ焼き) from the top left, with Shio (塩), or salt, for a clean taste!
For me, the authentic takoyaki experience means plenty of sauce and mayonnaise! But to cut through the richness, those generous heaps of green onions are absolutely divine!
Oh, and I always add a soda to my order. While the regular takoyaki and drink set offers a discount, the Negimayo option has a small additional charge. Still, it’s worth it – a cold drink just completes the meal!

Here’s what I ordered! The 'table' is more of a small shelf, but it's clever – there are hooks underneath where you can hang your bag.
And here’s a crucial tip: **Hanatako is cash only!** Make sure you have enough Japanese Yen on hand, as cards are not accepted.
Another helpful note: water is self-service. If you don't choose a drink set, they'll provide a paper cup, and you can help yourself to water.
It seems like lately, perhaps to speed up service, they don't serve the takoyaki piping hot straight off the grill like they used to. They let it cool down just enough so you won't scorch your mouth, but it's still deliciously warm. Even so, be careful – it's still quite hot!
Normally, I order the 10-piece option as a full meal, but on this particular day, I'd already had lunch and was just feeling a bit peckish, so I went for the 6-piece. It disappeared in a flash!
I had this just a couple of weeks ago (around early August 2026), and seeing these photos makes me want to go back tomorrow!
If your travels take you to Umeda, Osaka, you absolutely have to try Hanatako. You won't regret it!

Hanatako is located on the 1st floor of Shin-Umeda Shokudogai (新梅田食堂街), which you'll see on your left after crossing the street from Umeda Daimaru Department Store towards Hankyu Department Store. This entrance is Hanatako, and you should queue along the pillars.
Hanatako accepts cash payments only; cards cannot be used. Please make sure to bring cash when you visit.
The staff will ask if you prefer takeout or eat-in, so please inform them accordingly. Even if the line is long, we recommend eating in for the best taste. Water is self-service, and you will receive a paper cup if you don't choose a drink set.
