Step into Half Coffee, a charming Beijing cafe blending traditional Siheyuan architecture with modern vibes. Discover why local Gen Z loves this hidden gem for its unique ambiance and signature brews.
When you're planning a trip to Beijing and looking up cafes,
familiar names like Starbucks or Blue Bottle
are usually the first to catch your eye.
But for this trip, I wanted to find somewhere a little different.
Curious about where the locals hang out,
I spent hours searching on Xiaohongshu,
often called China's version of Instagram.
And that's how I stumbled upon Half Coffee.
Half Coffee is nestled inside a Siheyuan (traditional courtyard house),
which has lately become one of the trendiest styles of space in China.
It was incredibly impressive to see how they preserved the charm of historic Beijing architecture
while adding a chic, modern cafe vibe.
It was packed with trendy young locals rather than tourists.
I headed over to see exactly why Beijing's youth are so obsessed with this spot.

Why Beijing's Youth Flock to Half Coffee
Traveling around China, you start to spot some fascinating trends
that are quite different from back home.
While massive franchise cafes or minimalist "aesthetic" cafes dominate elsewhere,
recently in China, spaces that breathe new life into traditional heritage buildings
are having a massive moment.
The prime example of this is the Siheyuan.
A Siheyuan is a historical Chinese courtyard residence,
characterized by a central courtyard surrounded by buildings on all four sides.
While they once had a reputation for being outdated,
they've recently been reborn as trendy cafes, restaurants, and galleries—
making them the ultimate hotspots
for the younger generation.
Half Coffee is a brilliant example of this exciting cultural revival.
When I stepped inside, it was almost entirely local residents.
Some had their laptops open, working away,
while others were busy snapping aesthetic photos with friends.
I even saw people recreating those exact photo angles
I'd seen all over Xiaohongshu! 😆
It really felt like people were coming to experience the space itself,
rather than just grab a quick caffeine fix.
Even as someone who has traveled to China multiple times,
I felt this cafe was one of the best representations of what Beijing's youth culture is all about today.
The Courtyard Cafe in Nanluoguxiang
Half Coffee: Essential Info
Located in Nanluoguxiang (南锣鼓巷), Half Coffee is nestled
in one of Beijing's most iconic Hutong (traditional alleyway) districts.
Steeped in over 700 years of history,
this neighborhood is a fascinating blend of ancient architecture and modern shops.
As you wander down the narrow lanes, you'll pass souvenir shops, local eateries,
and cafes, making it a must-visit spot on any Beijing itinerary.
If there’s one app I highly recommend downloading for your trip to China,
it’s Amap (Gaode Maps / 高德地图).
Just like how travelers rely on local navigation apps in other countries,
locals in China live by Amap.
It is incredibly accurate, especially in winding, maze-like areas like the Hutongs where Google Maps often struggles.
I used Amap to track down Half Coffee, and even though it was tucked deep inside a complex alley, I found it without a hitch.
The moment I arrived,
the unique atmosphere of the traditional courtyard immediately stole my breath away.
With its striking red pillars and beautifully preserved historic architecture,
There were tables set up in the central courtyard.
If you're looking for a cafe where you can experience traditional architecture up close during your Beijing trip, you're going to absolutely love this space.
To be honest, I fell completely in love with the vibe even before ordering my coffee.
Reviewing Half Coffee's Signature Menu
On top of the usual Americanos and lattes, Half Coffee serves up some really unique signature drinks.
Even the names of the drinks on the menu were quite unique!
The menu items themselves had very distinct names.
For this visit, I decided to try their signature drink, 'Northern Island' (北岛), along with a pistachio latte.
First up, 'Northern Island' (北岛) is a signature creation made with Yunnan coffee beans.
The presentation was incredibly striking, served in a sleek wine glass.
When it first arrived, it felt less like a coffee and more like a fancy cocktail or a gourmet dessert drink.
When I took my first sip, it tasted quite different from the coffee flavor I had anticipated.
It wasn't a drink with a heavy, punchy coffee aroma; instead, it leaned heavily into fruity notes and a smooth, delicate flavor profile.
I feel like people who love trying unique specialty drinks will appreciate this much more than hardcore espresso purists.
It was a similar story with the pistachio latte I ordered alongside it.
It didn't have that strong, bold espresso kick you get with a standard latte.
The nutty, rich pistachio flavor took center stage, with the coffee flavor playing a relatively subtle supporting role.
Because of this, I'd personally describe Half Coffee as an "experiential cafe" rather than just a spot with amazing coffee.
It's a place where the fun lies in the unique presentation and adventurous flavor combinations.
There are plenty of options on the menu to enjoy even if you aren't a big coffee drinker.
Why You Absolutely Must Visit During Your Beijing Trip
(+ Essential Info You Need to Know Before You Go! ...The Restroom Situation)
Half Coffee is so much more than just a place to grab a cup of coffee.
It's a space where you can experience a traditional Beijing courtyard home (Siheyuan) while soaking in the latest cafe trends loved by local Chinese youth.
Plus, it pairs perfectly with a stroll through Nanluoguxiang, making it incredibly easy to fit into your travel itinerary.
If you want to experience a cafe where local Beijingers actually hang out during your trip, this spot is absolutely worth a visit.
⚠️
However, there is one important thing to keep in mind.
Due to its location in a historic Hutong alleyway, the cafe doesn't have its own private restroom inside.
You have to use the public restroom outside.
And here's the catch: the nearest public restroom is a
traditional-style public toilet, which might come as a bit of a shock to many international travelers.
While these are incredibly rare to find in major Chinese cities nowadays,
a few still remain in the historic Hutong districts.
When you walk into this public restroom,
there are no doors or even walls between stalls...
so if it's your first time encountering this, you might be quite startled! 😆
Even though I've traveled to China multiple times,
seeing it again after a while still gave me a little surprise.
So, if you're planning to visit Half Coffee,
I highly recommend using a modern restroom before you head into the area.
Even so, when it comes to the atmosphere alone...
I absolutely loved my time here.
It's a stunning space where traditional Beijing architecture meets modern cafe culture.
Once I visited in person, I completely understood
why it’s so highly recommended on Xiaohongshu.
If you're planning a trip to Beijing and exploring Nanluoguxiang,
Half Coffee is definitely a spot you should check out.
