Haenam Daeheungsa Patrol 2026: A Family Temple Adventure
Our family's National Heritage Patrol at Haenam's Daeheungsa Temple in September 2026 blended cultural discovery with environmental stewardship.
I recently shared the exciting news that our family was selected for the "September Temple Exploration with Le Mouton" event, part of the National Heritage Patrol program.

On our way back from a trip to Jindo Island, we made a special stop at Daeheungsa Temple in Haenam to participate in this event.
This experiential program, supported by Le Mouton, takes place at major temples across South Korea. Participants patrol the grounds, reflecting on the importance of environmental cleanup and cultural heritage preservation. We opted for the self-guided participation and visited Haenam Daeheungsa with our family on 09/07/2026.

The "Mountain Temple Trail" event in September 2026 had a few key missions: wearing comfortable Le Mouton shoes, completing a patrol log, and participating in environmental cleanup of the national heritage site. I thought it would be a meaningful activity for the kids, so I applied, and fortunately, we were selected!

True to its name, the "Mountain Temple Trail" leading into Daeheungsa Temple was impressive, with its serene temple atmosphere and a forest path bearing the marks of time.

After parking, we started our walk towards Haenam Daeheungsa Temple.

We began our environmental cleanup with the kids right from the parking lot.

At first, the kids grumbled a bit, asking, "Why are *we* picking up trash, and Mom and Dad get the Le Mouton shoes?" But when Mom told them, "It's for Daddy's birthday!" they quickly got excited and enthusiastically joined in the activity.

These are the Le Mouton shoes we received as a prize for being selected for the event.

This was my second time visiting Haenam Daeheungsa Temple, and it felt like the grounds were gradually expanding with ongoing construction, making it even grander.

Though not immediately obvious, we still found quite a bit of trash scattered around.

It was a day with light drizzle, which, surprisingly, felt refreshing during the warm summer. It was perfect weather for exploring.

Here's my second child, delighted to have discovered a sizable piece of trash!

We explored various parts of Daeheungsa Temple.

We collected quite a substantial amount.

I also took a moment to read a passage from the Avatamsaka Sutra (Hwaeomgyeong), reflecting on its wisdom.

Gazing at the small candles, each holding someone's heartfelt wishes, offered a moment for quiet contemplation.

To conclude our visit, we stepped into a small cafe within Daeheungsa Temple, enjoying a cup of tea with the family to cool down from the summer heat.

This is also where we diligently filled out our National Heritage Patrol logbook.

We also made sure to get our visit certified with a stamp in our visitor's passport.
