1. Our Visit to Gyukatsu Tomita: The Restaurant Worth the Wait

I often travel to Japan for both leisure and business,
but this time, my husband and I really dedicated ourselves to
savoring a true foodie adventure in Osaka, Japan!

My husband isn't a fan of seafood at all, and he's incredibly serious about meat.
As a true carnivore, he'd always wanted to try authentic gyukatsu in Japan.
So, after it received high praise from Park Myung-soo on the recent YouTube show 'Hwalmyeongsu',
and already gaining serious popularity among Korean travelers,
we decided to visit the famous Japanese eatery, Gyukatsu Tomita.

To give you the conclusion upfront:
as rumored, we certainly enjoyed delicious gyukatsu.
However, with so many incredible eateries across Japan,
if you asked if it was truly worth sacrificing one or two precious hours from your Osaka independent travel itinerary to wait,
I'd have a hard time giving a definitive 'yes'.

Its immense popularity means that while waiting, expectations for the taste naturally soar,
and it seems many people share my sentiment.
I'll share all the details about 'Gyukatsu Tomita,' currently one of Osaka's hottest dining spots,
including its location, the waiting situation,
the restaurant's atmosphere, and, of course, the taste.
2. Gyukatsu Tomita: Location and Waiting Information

Opening Hours
11:00 AM - 9:00 PM
Located on the second floor of a building near Namba Station and Denden Town intersection,
it's perfectly situated for a leisurely walk from Dotonbori or Namba during your travels.

While it already had some word-of-mouth fame as a beef cutlet spot,
it truly soared to prominence, joining the ranks of famous gyukatsu establishments like Tokyo's 'Motomura',
thanks to its signature cooking method – crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside – combined with the charming personal mini grill system.
It's now firmly established as a premier gyukatsu restaurant in the Namba area of Osaka.

On top of that, its popularity has skyrocketed since the 'Hwalmyeongsu' broadcast,
and now, waiting 1-2 hours around meal times is standard.
While some reviews mentioned that you might avoid long waits if you visit during off-peak hours on weekdays,
I visited just outside the peak season, and since my accommodation was nearby,
I observed the restaurant daily throughout my trip.
The waiting line was consistently long at all hours, for an entire week!

There's no separate reservation system or kiosk available,
meaning you simply have to walk in and join the queue on site.
Given its popularity, if your Japan Osaka travel itinerary
is tight, it might be hard to carve out the time
to visit this restaurant, I believe.
We kept an eye on things, and despite doing an "open run" on a weekday,
dozens of people were already waiting in line ahead of us.
We started waiting at 10:40 AM
and queued for over an hour before we finally got in.
When the line gets too long, they can't block the front of other stores,
so they actually extend the queue to the front of the TENGA store building
a block away, which felt a little awkward!

The restaurant is located on the second floor, so even after getting inside the building and onto the stairs,
we still had quite a wait.
The interior is quite intimate, with just a few counter seats and tables,
which made the queue feel even longer.
3. Gyukatsu Menu

To speed up the ordering process,
they show you the menu in advance while you're waiting in line.
There's even a Korean menu available, so ordering is a breeze!
You have to order one Gyukatsu menu per person,
but don't worry, the portions are quite manageable, so you'll be able to enjoy it all!

My husband, who isn't a fan of grated yam and prefers a larger portion, chose No. 2,
while I, who loves grated yam and wanted a lighter meal,
ordered No. 3.

🍺
The sets come with cabbage, miso soup, and potato salad.
Additional servings of each side were
100 yen, and you get one free rice refill!
Since the meat can be a bit rich, a crisp draft beer sounded incredibly appealing.
A draft beer is 600 yen, and a cola is 400 yen.
4. A Flavor Bursting with Rich Beef Aroma

Considering we dedicated part of our precious Japan Osaka free-and-easy itinerary to this place,
and waited for over an hour with rumbling stomachs,
you can imagine just how hungry we were upon entering!
And it was, as expected, absolutely delicious.

Once they lit the personal grill placed at each seat,
we meticulously grilled each piece of gyukatsu, whose beautiful reddish-pink cross-section was truly a work of art.

The thin yet incredibly crispy breading encased the meat,
and after just a quick sear on the grill,
a single bite unleashed a burst of rich beef juices and a wonderfully savory aroma.

After enjoying a piece or two of the meat on its own, it started to feel a touch rich,
so we savored the fantastic combination with the special soy sauce
and pungent wasabi provided.
Since my set included the grated yam sauce,
I mixed it into my rice, topped it with a slice of meat, and thoroughly enjoyed every delicious bite.

Having traveled to Japan quite frequently, I'm pretty familiar with grated yam sauce.
Its slightly tangy, salty, and viscous texture
means it's definitely a flavor that can be a hit or miss for some.
More than any other sauce, I found that just a touch of salt with wasabi
perfectly enhanced the rich beef flavor and paired wonderfully.

Personally, I'm a big fan of starchy root vegetables,
The potato salad, with its delightfully chunky texture, was incredibly tasty and complemented the meat wonderfully.
The crisp cabbage salad was also wonderfully refreshing.
We were seated at a corner of the counter, and since it was an open kitchen, we had a front-row view of the cabbage shredding machine endlessly whirring away – it was quite entertaining to watch!
4. Concluding Our Osaka Culinary Journey

Located in Namba, the vibrant heart of Osaka travel, this gyukatsu restaurant is incredibly famous, so my husband and I visited it, brimming with curiosity.

With its crispy exterior and tender interior, plus the fun of grilling each piece individually on a personal mini-grill, the gyukatsu itself boasted superb perfection and flavor, truly making it an outstanding Japanese culinary spot. Even my husband, a dedicated meat-lover, heartily finished his plate!
However, for those on a tight schedule enjoying a free and easy trip to Osaka, Japan, you might want to consider if enduring the long 1-2 hour waits is truly worth it for this particular spot.

After all, there are plenty of alternative amazing eateries all over Japan's travel destinations!
Nevertheless, if you're determined to experience this popular gyukatsu set, I highly recommend trying to visit during off-peak dining hours!
I hope your next Japanese food adventure is a resounding success!
