Guam Car Rental Guide 2026: Tips, Insurance & Discounts

Planning a trip to Guam soon?

I initially wondered if renting a car was truly necessary,

but after my experience, the answer is a resounding yes!

Especially if you plan on exploring the South Island or going snorkeling.

Public transportation in Guam is quite limited, so relying solely on taxis or guided tours can quickly add up and become far more expensive.

I booked my rental for 4 nights at around ~$140-$170, and the best part? Parking is free everywhere in Guam, unlike my previous trip to Hawaii where parking fees were a constant worry!

Booking Your Rental Car

Don't waste precious vacation planning time sifting through individual rental car company websites to compare prices.

Using a comparison site like MyRealTrip made the process so much easier.

It allowed me to compare insurance conditions and total costs on a single page, which was incredibly convenient.

Based on my search (as of August 2026, for a 4-night rental from December 24-28, 2026),

the lowest price I found for a Kia Soul equivalent was a total of ~$153.

This price included insurance, which is fantastic as it means no unexpected extra charges when you pick up the car.

⚠️Always double-check the total cost and ensure insurance conditions are included. Some companies might show a lower initial price that doesn't cover full insurance, leading to surprises at the counter.

Choosing the Right Car Class

There can be a noticeable price difference between vehicle classes.

I opted for a Nissan Versa, which is comparable to a Kia Soul.

Guam's roads aren't heavily trafficked and generally feel relaxed, so I didn't see a strong need for anything larger than a compact or mid-size car.

Unless you're traveling with a lot of luggage, a compact SUV or mid-size vehicle should be perfectly adequate.

A crucial tip: if your trunk has a window where valuables can be seen, it's safer to choose a model with an opaque trunk or ensure no items are visible, as break-ins can occur.

Understanding Rental Car Insurance

Choosing the right insurance can be one of the most confusing parts of renting a car.

Generally, options are divided into basic coverage, full coverage (often called Collision Damage Waiver or CDW with zero deductible), and premium coverage.

I opted for full coverage, and I highly recommend choosing at least this level, especially if you're an inexperienced driver or navigating unfamiliar overseas roads.

It offers invaluable peace of mind.

Guam Airport: Pickup to Drop-off

Upon arrival at the airport, I was able to pick up my rental car immediately after exiting the terminal.

Three Essential Documents for Car Rental:

You absolutely need to have these three items ready:

1. Your valid driver's license from your home country.

2. An International Driving Permit (IDP).

3. A major credit card in the primary driver's name.

I rented from Nissan, and there was an airport facility usage fee of $0.50 per day, totaling $2.00 for my 4-day rental, which was paid directly at pickup.

It's good to know about these small additional charges beforehand so you're not caught off guard.

They also allowed one additional driver to be registered for free, which was great for sharing driving duties with my husband.

We even got complimentary beach chairs, though we never actually used them!

Returning the car was straightforward: just park it and hand over the keys. There wasn't a separate vehicle inspection.

With light traffic, even less experienced drivers will find navigating Guam's roads stress-free.

Plus, it’s wonderful to be able to pull over spontaneously and soak in the stunning ocean views whenever you like.

If your itinerary includes exploring the South Island or enjoying some snorkeling, I can't recommend renting a car enough.

Trying to get around on foot or relying on limited options will turn your transportation into a chore rather than part of the adventure.
