Goseokjeong Hantangang Geopark: UNESCO Site Near Cheorwon Flower Garden
Don't miss Goseokjeong Hantangang Geopark, a UNESCO-listed natural wonder in Cheorwon. Explore its dramatic basalt cliffs, learn about ancient legends, and enjoy a serene escape from the bustling flower fields.
While visiting the Cheorwon Goseokjeong Flower Garden is wonderful in spring and autumn, the truth is that
Goseokjeong itself, right next to the flower garden, is the original namesake of this place and one of Cheorwon's
Nine Scenic Views, renowned as a UNESCO Global Geopark.

Goseokjeong is also said to have been a base for Im Kkeok-jeong, a righteous outlaw during the Joseon Dynasty.

Since it's a habitat for cranes, I guess that explains the crane fountain.
But seriously, I think I'm starting to understand with age why every region has these huge, slightly kitschy
sculptures.
As I get older, even these sculptures somehow start to feel endearing...?
Perhaps it's because the decision-makers at each institution are middle-aged, which leads to these kinds of sculptures... Heh heh.
When I was younger, seeing these kinds of sculptures made me wonder if they really needed to spend money to create them. But now... it's surprising that a day has come when even these feel charming.
Anyway, Goseokjeong is an older tourist destination, so compared to the Goseokjeong Flower Garden,
it offers more shade, better landscaping, and restaurants are closer.
It would be a shame to just pass by Goseokjeong after visiting the flower garden.

Currently, admission is free, so the ticket office is not in operation.
Next to the ticket office, at the interpreter's house, you'll find a stamp station for your National Heritage Visitor Passport.

If you forgot to bring your passport, don't worry – loose sheets are available on-site.

There are several paths leading down to Goseokjeong,
but the main entrance with its tiled roof offers complete shade, making it pleasant to go up and down.

However, all paths consist of stairs, so comfortable clothing and shoes are
essential.
They say there are about 160-200 stairs.
If you follow the stairs down, a completely different landscape unfolds, unlike the flower garden.

The Hantan River geological landscape around Yeoncheon, Pocheon, and Cheorwon is absolutely
highly recommended!

The Goseokjeong area in Cheorwon is a place where granite and basalt lava plateaus
blend together, creating the stunning Goseok scenic beauty crafted by nature, perfectly complemented by the pavilion (Goseokjeong) overlooking the river.

You can go rafting here, and there were also 'tongtongbaes' (small motorboats).

I thought about taking a tongtongbae, but when I saw it up close, the boat was incredibly shaky...
and since I'm not exactly a water person, I couldn't bring myself to do it. Haha.
Quickly gave up.
At ~$5 for adults and ~$3 for children, it's a relatively affordable price,
and passengers do wear life jackets.
It might be worth giving it a try!

Watching the rafting teams from afar, it certainly looked fun.
Oh my goodness... they even did diving... wild!
No way I could do that. Heh.

For those who prefer not to go down the stairs, there's a pavilion called Sejonggangmujeong
where you can enjoy the view from above.

For those who find stairs challenging, Sejong Gangmujeong is a great option to use!

If you're planning a trip to Cheorwon, make sure to not only explore the Goseokjeong Flower Garden,
but also experience Goseokjeong itself!
