There are tours departing from Seoul!
Getting There
Since the DMZ Peace (Security) Tour requires on-site registration,
you'll need to arrive early to register.
Even though we went on a weekday,
and left early,
we just made it on time!

Luckily, as soon as we got out, they called us right in,
so we quickly entered.

(Snapping photos while running)

Once you enter the registration office,
you'll need to fill out the personal details for all passengers.

You'll also fill out the Cheorwon DMZ Peace (Security) Tour Entry Application.
(Representative's name, vehicle number, contact details)
After completing the application,
you'll pay the tour fees.
Oh, there's also a Crane Watching Tour (starting from November)!

Once you pay the fee, you'll receive your tickets!

Now, after a quick restroom break, only the designated representatives (drivers) are asked to gather.

It looks like these warning lights are meant to be attached to your vehicles.

With some time to spare, I decided to explore Durumi Town for a bit.

There are also some taxidermied animals to see.

Only the representatives are gathered, listening intently to the guide's instructions.

They're receiving all the details about the DMZ Peace Tour, including the route and crucial precautions.

Once all instructions are received, it's time to head back to your own cars.

With the warning lights attached to your car, you simply fall in line and follow the vehicle ahead.

Since you're driving your own car,
it's super convenient – kids can enjoy snacks and
listen to music, making for a truly comfortable journey!

The 2nd Infiltration Tunnel
The 2nd Tunnel is a tunnel that North Korean forces dug to invade South Korea, and it was reportedly discovered on March 19, 1975.
The 2nd Tunnel
is located 50~160m underground,
and has a total length of 3.5 km.
Inside the tunnel, there's a plaza
large enough for a massive force to gather,
and its exit splits into three branches.
Cheorwon County
operates the 2nd Tunnel as part of its DMZ Peace Tour course.
Cheorwon County Culture & Tourism Homepage
The 2nd Tunnel course was definitely the most exciting part for me!

After putting on our safety helmets,
we listened to the explanation and entered!

Since the tunnel is low (especially for taller visitors),
safety helmets are a must to avoid hitting your head!
It's not extremely low, but even at my height of about 165 cm,
there were quite a few sections where I had to duck a little.
The tunnel was incredibly cool, like air conditioning was on.
There was a thermometer showing 21 degrees Celsius, haha!
Inside the tunnel, they mentioned that there are pieces of evidence along the way
that support the claim this tunnel was dug by the North Korean military
for the purpose of invading South Korea,
and encouraged us to look out for them.
When you see a soldier like this,
you've reached the end of the tunnel.
You can't go any further.

You can see a mine cart.
There's a 'Unification Wish and Achievement Well.'
The kids wanted to throw coins,
so Mom gave them ~$0 each, haha!
On the way back,
three pieces of evidence proving North Korea dug the tunnel are displayed.

Next, we entered the 2nd Tunnel Exhibition Hall.

North Korean tools discovered in the tunnel.

Cheorwon Peace Observatory
We've arrived at the Peace Observatory!

To get to the Peace Observatory, you have to take the monorail.
You could walk,
but I highly recommend taking the monorail because it's affordable.
It's hot! ;;

They said we should each get our own monorail tickets.
Monorail Fares

Adults ~$1, Children ~$1
(Round-trip fare)
After getting our monorail tickets,

We rode the monorail up.

The monorail moves quite slowly,
so it's not scary at all.

Cheorwon Peace Observatory
is a place where you can see towards North Korea,

so photography is prohibited
from the moment you enter.

Inside, you can use binoculars to observe the border area
between North and South.
We listened to the explanations,
but all the mountain ridges looked similar,
and with so many trees, it was hard to distinguish anything ;;;.
Afterwards, we took the monorail back down.

The kids had a lot of fun!
Woljeong-ri Station History
Our final stop was Woljeong-ri Station History.

Woljeong-ri Station is the northernmost point,
and we were told absolutely not to photograph the right side, as it faces North Korea.

Woljeong-ri Station was once a flag stop on the Gyeongwon Line (Seoul-Wonsan),
located just after Sintan-ri Station and close to the Southern Limit Line,
making it the northernmost station.
It's said that the station, destroyed during the Korean War, has been restored.

The existing station building and all its auxiliary facilities
were moved to their current location and restored after being destroyed during the Korean War.
The wreckage of a derailed train from the Korean War
and Diesel Locomotive No. 4001 are said to be preserved within the station grounds.

The Iron Horse Wants to Run

They say that train still bears bullet marks from the Korean War.
It used to stand upright,
but now it has completely collapsed.....
(I heard it, but what exactly did I hear...?)

The weather was beautiful, so the photos turned out great,
and we took some pictures.
We took our time exploring.
The kids found the train tracks exciting,
and walked along them.

Concluding our visit at Woljeong-ri Station,
we retrieved our representative's ID
and our group disbanded.
Currently, the Workers' Party Headquarters is closed for viewing until November due to renovation work.
So, they recommended Cheorwon History Park, a place I had visited before.

Since they mentioned it would be a 3-hour trip,
I packed plenty of water, snacks, and other essentials.
However, we traveled by car, which was super comfortable,
and they thoughtfully arranged for frequent restroom breaks,
so it was a really relaxing experience!
If you're traveling with kids, remember it's a 3-hour journey, so
definitely pack some easy snacks and bottled water!
I originally came for the tunnel tour today,
but I had no idea it would be such a packed and fun experience!
If you have children, I highly, highly recommend it!
Stepping into the cool tunnel on a hot day just
inexplicably made my heart flutter with excitement!
Thanks to my amazing mom, I got to have such a new and wonderful experience!
Paid for out of my own pocket!
