Today, I'm thrilled to introduce you to

Yeonhwaji Pond and Hwanggeum Market, both nestled in Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province.

Gimcheon Local's Travel Itinerary

Both places are located right in the heart of Gimcheon city,

making them accessible by both public transportation and private car.

If you're using KTX Gimcheon (Gumi) Station,

it's convenient to travel in the order of Jikjisa Temple → Yeonhwaji Pond → Hwanggeum Market.

And if you're taking the Mugunghwa train to Gimcheon Station,

you can even walk to Hwanggeum Market from there.

If you're driving, Gimcheon IC is quite close,

and parking spaces are available at each location.

Since exact real-time routes and travel times can vary depending on your visit date,

I recommend double-checking before you go.

Gimcheon Yeonhwaji Pond: A City Oasis Famous for Cherry Blossoms and Lotus Flowers

Right beside the pedestrian path circling Yeonhwaji Pond,

you'll find free street parking available.

When I visited on a weekday afternoon, it was incredibly peaceful,

so finding a parking spot was a breeze.

However, it's famous as a cherry blossom hotspot in spring,

so parking might be challenging during the festival period.

Right next door, there's a Gimcheon Tourist Information Center,

ready to introduce you to all the must-see spots in Gimcheon.

They also offer cultural commentary,

so if you're exploring culture and history with your kids,

Be sure to drop by and explore what it has to offer!

Yeonhwaji is a reservoir that was built during the Joseon Dynasty

to supply water for agriculture.

Today, it's a peaceful urban retreat and a wonderful spot for a stroll,

having been transformed into a public park.

While Yeonhwaji is famous as a cherry blossom hotspot in spring,

with its banks full of cherry trees, the pond itself blossoms with lotus flowers,

making summer a fantastic time to visit and admire them.

On a small island within Yeonhwaji,

you'll find a pavilion known as Bonghwangdae.

This spot is designated as a cultural heritage site of Gimcheon City,

and had specific opening hours.

You can step inside through its beautiful tiled gate.

Bonghwangdae, perched atop the stairs,

was quite grand — larger than your average pavilion.

However, visitors aren't allowed to go all the way inside.

It seems to be a measure to protect this precious cultural heritage,

so while it was a shame, I explored it from the outside.

Beyond Bonghwangdae, you'll come across a charming small stone bridge called Bonghwanggyo,

Cross it, and you can explore the inner island!

The inner island boasts a lovely small walking path and tranquil resting spots,

perfect for relaxing in the shade and soaking in the beautiful scenery.

The lotus flowers on Yeonhwaji were incredibly close,

and watching the fountain in the center was truly delightful.

While it's said that the lotus flowers are at their peak from July to early August,

perhaps because I visited as late August was approaching,

some of them were already beginning to fade.

Nevertheless, seeing the beautifully blooming lotus flowers scattered throughout,

I felt it was definitely worth the visit, even outside of cherry blossom season.

Yeonhwaji is especially renowned for the cherry trees encircling its banks.

When spring arrives and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, a stunning floral tunnel unfurls along the walking path,

And after sunset, the waterfront lights create a magical ambiance,

making it a popular spot for night cherry blossom viewing too!

But remember, even outside of cherry blossom season,

it's an impeccable spot for a leisurely stroll.

It's highly recommended as a wonderful date spot for couples or a lovely outing for families with children.

After enjoying the serene Yeonhwaji Pond, we made our way to the market.

Kimcheon Hwanggeum Market boasts excellent parking facilities,

making it super convenient to visit by car.

There were on-street parking spots right next to the market entrance,

and a spacious public parking lot just a short distance away,

making it incredibly easy to find a spot.

Kimcheon Hwanggeum Market was established in 1953 as a public market.

It's renowned for carrying on the legacy of 'Gimcheonjang,'

which was once considered one of the five greatest markets of the Joseon Dynasty.

Today, it's a vibrant hub selling agricultural products, fruits, vegetables,

a variety of delicious foods, and everyday necessities.

It's especially famous for its sundae (Korean blood sausage) and jokbal (pig's trotters)!

Hwanggeum Market typically operates as a permanent market,

but it truly comes alive on dates ending in 5 or 0 each month,

when a special five-day market (Oiljang) is held alongside it.

So, if you're keen on experiencing the full market atmosphere,

I highly recommend planning your visit to coincide with one of these market days.

I visited on a regular afternoon, not a market day, and while the permanent shops were open,

it felt quite quiet and uncrowded.

There were notably many specialty stores for sundae and jokbal,

but many had already closed early,

so the market wasn't as lively or enjoyable to explore.

Wandering further inside, I stumbled upon Hwanggeumal Park (Golden Egg Park)

and decided to pop in while I was there.

It's home to a 'Golden Egg' said to grant wishes,

so I made sure to touch it and make a wish!

If you're visiting Gimcheon on an Oiljang day,

I highly recommend stopping by the historic Hwanggeum Market as well.
