Yeonhwaji (연화지) is a place often talked about when spring arrives.
Cherry blossoms surround the pond,
and at night, lights create a special atmosphere.
During that season, when it's bustling with people,
I can't always bring myself to go,
but it was a place I truly wanted to visit if I ever got the chance.

On the morning of October 4th,
under a clear, high autumn sky,
I found my first travel destination in Gimcheon (김천).
It was a place I'd wanted to visit for a long time,
but was afraid of the crowds, so I hadn't gone until I took a stroll around
Yeonhwaji.
Having been there myself, I finally understood why Yeonhwaji appears so frequently on social media every spring as a cherry blossom hotspot.
Basic Information for Gimcheon Yeonhwaji

Originally, it was a reservoir that collected water for agricultural use during the Joseon Dynasty.
Even back then, it was so beautiful that an island was created in the middle, and a pavilion called Bonghwangdae (봉황대) was built, where people would gather to enjoy the scenic beauty and leisurely pursuits.

Now, it has become a beautiful waterfront park,
perfect for walks throughout all four seasons.
820-1 Gyodong (교동), Gimcheon-si (김천시), Gyeongbuk (경북)
Open 24 hours, Free Admission
(Bonghwangdae: 09:00 ~ 17:00)
It's convenient to use the roadside parking areas around Yeonhwaji or the nearby Gimcheon Hodong Citizen Park (김천호동시민공원) parking lot.
It's a wonderful pavilion, floating like an island in the middle of the pond.
You can cross a bridge to enter.

I arrived about 1-2 minutes before 9 AM.
There were parking areas all around Yeonhwaji, and perhaps because it wasn't a busy time or season, I parked without any inconvenience, right near the entrance to Bonghwangdae.
(On my way out, I noticed a separate Yeonhwaji parking lot off to the side.)
As soon as 9 AM hit, they opened the gates to Bonghwangdae, and I entered as the first visitor of the day.
The Charms of Yeonhwaji in Autumn

The pond was covered with large lotus leaves, and under the clear autumn sky, the tree leaves were just beginning to show hints of autumn foliage, creating a wonderfully pleasant atmosphere.
In particular, after crossing the bridge to the middle of the pond (Bonghwangdae), you'll find benches placed throughout.

Sitting quietly on a bench and looking around, the scenery in every direction felt like a painting in a frame. I spent such a peaceful time that I didn't want to leave.

Yeonhwaji on a weekend morning was so quiet, making it a perfect spot for a stroll or for quiet contemplation.
If I hadn't had my child with me, and if I hadn't had a schedule to keep afterwards, I could have easily spent about an hour occupying a bench on the Bonghwangdae island.
See You Next Year When the Cherry Blossoms Are in Full Bloom!

If just the gentle ripples and lotus leaves can be so healing, imagine how fantastic it would be when the trees fully lining this wide pond are completely dyed in pink cherry blossoms!
Sitting on a bench, taking in the beautiful scenery, I made a promise with my child: "Let's definitely come back next spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom!" I highly recommend this as a Gimcheon travel course where you can stroll and chat quietly with your child.

Yeonhwaji (연화지)
I visited without much expectation.
Honestly, I love ponds,
but I thought it wouldn't be much fun for a child,
and I didn't have much prior information about it.
It just kept popping up on social media every spring,
so I thought it would be wonderful to visit now.
That's how I ended up visiting this place.

In spring, the cherry blossoms are beautiful,
in summer, the lotus flowers are in full bloom,
and in autumn, not only are the lotus leaves covering the clear sky stunning,
but the fallen autumn foliage makes it incredibly picturesque.
Even in winter, with a touch of melancholy,
its poignant beauty makes it even more appealing.
It's beautiful in all four seasons.
Personally, I love Seochulji (서출지) in Gyeongju (경주),
and Yeonhwaji gave me a similar vibe.

While Seochulji is a place to enjoy by strolling around the pond,
Yeonhwaji allows you to enjoy it right from the center of the pond,
and that's what I found so charming.
For those who used to sit in the pavilion and enjoy the elegant natural beauty,
there would have been no tall buildings obstructing the view back then.
With an unobstructed view and a gentle breeze,
it must have felt like paradise, right?
I had that thought for a moment.
It was full of trees that showcase all four seasons, so you didn't have to worry about finding shade,
and it was so quiet that all your senses could truly rest.

Cafes and restaurants were well-developed around Yeonhwaji,
and the parking facilities were also convenient, so unless it's a peak season,
parking wouldn't be a concern.
Right next to it is the Kim Hojoong Sori-gil (김호중 소리길),
welcoming visitors with beautiful murals, so if you have time,
it would be great to visit.
We couldn't go because we had other plans.

I had been wondering where to go in Gimcheon (김천).
But wherever I go, there are so many places to explore,
I just can't stay home every weekend! ^^;;
So, this weekend, too, I'm heading out!
