We arrived late in the evening and took advantage of the complimentary taxi service from Gero Station directly to the ryokan! It was incredibly convenient that Bosenkan arranged a taxi for us even after the regular shuttle hours had ended! 👍🏻

We opted for a traditional tatami room, and with three futons laid out side-by-side, the spacious room easily accommodated all three of us with plenty of space to spare! 😆

A quintessential ryokan experience is donning a yukata! We all slipped into ours and, of course, had to snap a group photo in front of the lobby mirror. It was such a charming and memorable moment.

With a light drizzle (or perhaps a hint of snow), we borrowed umbrellas from the ryokan and headed to the outdoor foot bath. The atmosphere was steeped in classic Japanese charm, and it felt incredibly serene.

Soaking our feet in the steaming foot bath on a rainy evening was pure bliss, instantly melting away the fatigue from our day of touring. From here, you can even watch trains pass by!

Gero town itself isn't heavily crowded, which made enjoying this peaceful moment with just our group even more special.

The hallways exude a wonderful retro Japanese vibe, and you'll even find vending machines on the way to the main public bath. Inside the onsen, there's a fantastic open-air bath. Taking a soak during winter was incredibly refreshing and completely washed away my fatigue. I went once in the evening and then again early the next morning – that morning soak even seemed to cure any lingering effects from the night before! 😂
What truly surprised me was the quality of the water: as someone with dry skin, I always need lotion after a shower, but after bathing in Gero Onsen, my skin felt wonderfully hydrated without any lotion at all. Gero Onsen is truly one of Japan's top three onsens, and the water is simply amazing!

After a thorough soak, we spent our last evening with friends in our room, enjoying Suntory whisky and even some Shin Ramyun – a perfect end to our adventure.
We also made sure to have some Ukon no Chikara (a popular Japanese turmeric drink) ready for the next morning!

The next morning, we fueled up with a hearty and authentic Japanese breakfast! Our spread included grilled salmon, tamagoyaki (rolled omelet), tofu, and a small hot pot dish – a truly elegant and satisfying start to the day.

Opting for a breakfast-only plan helped keep the cost down, which was a definite plus! 👍🏻

Looking out the window in the morning, the view was simply stunning: the river, a railway bridge, and a traditional Japanese garden, all framed by misty mountains in the background.
After checking out, we comfortably took the ryokan's shuttle back to Gero Station. 🚐

While exploring Gero town in the evening, we spotted cute pebble art on the ground! 😆
Gero is famous for its charming frog characters hidden throughout the town, as its name sounds like 'gero gero,' the Japanese onomatopoeia for a frog's croak! 🐸

Honestly, my only regret was visiting just one ryokan because the experience was so wonderful!
I'm not one to stay in super hot baths for long, so an onsen with great water quality was more than enough for me, and Bosenkan fit the bill perfectly. 🩵

If you're planning a trip to Nagoya and want to include a relaxing onsen stay, I wholeheartedly recommend Gero Onsen.
It's a quiet town brimming with adorable charm!
