Elk Island National Park Day Trip 2026: Family Fall Fun Near Edmonton
Planning a fall adventure near Edmonton? Join us for a memorable family day trip to Elk Island National Park, complete with wildlife sightings and lake fun!

Hey there, fellow adventurers! It's Dori here. 😊
When the weather is absolutely perfect, it feels like a waste to stay indoors, doesn't it?
With a clear sky and a refreshing breeze, my family and I recently embarked on a fantastic fall outing to Elk Island National Park. 🍁🌲
It's a spot just a short, easy drive from Edmonton that I'd been meaning to visit for ages, and this time, we finally made it!
Before heading out, we even picked up some burgers from Five Guys in Sherwood Park.
Watching my little one happily munch on warm fries in the car, I knew our adventure had already begun. 😂
The weather was so glorious that the drive itself was incredibly relaxing.
Tips for Visiting Elk Island National Park & Entrance Fees

Since it was our first time, we initially set our GPS for the Visitor Centre.
However, once we arrived, we realized that our actual destination, the Astotin Lake Recreation Area, was quite a bit further inside the park.
So, if you're visiting for the first time and Astotin Lake is your main goal, you probably don't need to stop at the Visitor Centre first; you can head straight in.

And about the entrance fee!
During our visit, the summer free admission period had ended, so we paid the regular entrance fee.
For our Family/Group, it was $19.50.
In 2026, free admission under the Canada Strong Pass was valid until September 7th, with regular fees applying from September 8th onwards.
Keep in mind that children 17 and under are free.
Fees and free admission policies can change depending on the season, so I highly recommend checking the official website before you go.
Bison Sighting Right at the Entrance!
The most astonishing thing right after entering Elk Island was encountering a herd of bison! 🦬
They appeared just a short drive from the entrance.
The problem was...
It wasn't a great spot to pull over immediately. 😭
'Oh well, we'll probably see more on the way,' I thought, driving slowly...
We didn't see a single bison after that.
Hahaha!
Folks, if you see a bison, snap a picture right away!
Don't be like me and think 'I'll see another one,' only to miss out on any photos. 😂
Elk Island is indeed a place where you can spot bison and various other wildlife, but since they are wild animals, where and when you'll encounter them is really a matter of luck.
So, if you spot bison near the road, observe them safely from your car and make sure to capture some photos.
No Beavers, But Plenty of Evidence

I might not have gotten a picture of the bison, but I did find some interesting sights along the road instead.
Around the puddles and waterfronts, we spotted several piles of sticks that looked like they were built by beavers. 🪵
While we didn't see any actual beavers,
'Are there beavers living around here?'
I found myself looking around curiously. 😂
If you're visiting with kids, searching for these little traces can be a fun activity.
Finally, Arriving at Astotin Lake!

And finally, we arrived at Astotin Lake, our intended destination. 🌊
Wow...
The lake was much wider and more open than I expected.
Stepping out of the car, the expansive scenery unfolded, and I immediately thought, 'This trip was absolutely worth it.'
Instead of a strenuous trek, we spent several hours relaxing by the lake, playing with our child, having snacks, and taking leisurely strolls.
Astotin Lake offers picnic areas, a playground, and walking paths, making it a great spot to spend half a day with kids.
We saw many people enjoying barbecues and relaxing in camping chairs, soaking up the atmosphere.
It truly felt like a typical Canadian weekend, with people enjoying nature at a relaxed pace. 😊
The Lake's Condition Was a Bit Disappointing That Day

One minor disappointment was seeing quite a bit of greenish substance along the lake's edge.
To me, it looked like algae, but my child saw it as exciting green slime.
Armed with a stick, they peered into the water and exclaimed,
"Mom! It's green slime!"
Haha!
Kids, right?
They have a knack for turning anything into a toy. 🤣
Meanwhile, I was constantly reminding them,
"Let's not touch that, sweetie!"
Parks Canada actually advises that blue-green algae blooms can occur in Astotin Lake, and when visible algae are present, visitors should avoid entering or touching the water, and keep pets out as well.
So, if you're visiting with children, it's best to check the lake conditions on the day of your visit and avoid contact if you see any algae, rather than planning for water play.
It felt like a day where I went to enjoy nature with my child, but ended up getting a proper safety lesson myself! 😂
Gulls and Geese: Even More Relaxed Than People

There were also plenty of gulls and geese around the lake.
It seemed like they weren't afraid of people at all...
They just walked alongside us, almost as if we were friends.
Especially when we were eating our Five Guys, they'd nonchalantly wander nearby.
'Did they smell it?'
I wondered. 😂
It felt like they were threatening us to leave some Five Guys burgers for them, having caught a whiff of the delicious scent.
Of course, we didn't leave any. Sorry, guys! 😎
A Great Playground for Kids, Too!

Surprisingly, the place my child enjoyed most at Astotin Lake wasn't the lake itself or even the bison...
It was the playground!
Hahaha!
We came all the way to the lake, only for them to spend ages playing at the playground.
Still, it was nice for us to enjoy the surrounding scenery and take a short break while our child played energetically.
With picnic tables and barbecue facilities available, it would be perfect to pack a lunch or some simple food and spend a whole leisurely day there on a nice day.
Canoeing is Also an Option!

As we explored the lake, we noticed people paddling their own canoes on the water.
It turns out there's a place where you can rent canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards on-site.
However, the rental office was closed during our visit, so we couldn't try it this time.
I imagine it gets quite busy with water activities during the summer months.
I'd love to try canoeing with my child another time.
I even snapped a photo of the canoe rental price list that was there, so if you're planning to use it, you can refer to the picture below.
An Alberta Cowboy Vibe on the Way Home

After a few hours of fun at Astotin Lake, we headed back home.
The atmosphere on the drive back was just as lovely.
We saw horses and cattle leisurely grazing in the fields along the road. 🐴🐄
Seeing this kind of scenery always makes me feel like,
'Ah, this is truly Alberta.'
I even pulled over briefly to take a few photos of the cows.
I wanted to photograph the horses too, but the timing wasn't right, which was a little disappointing. 🥹
Elk Island: A Great Fall Outing Near Edmonton

Having visited, I truly feel that Elk Island is an excellent nearby getaway for those in Edmonton who want to experience nature without traveling too far.
Especially with kids, it's great because you can enjoy:
Wildlife viewing, like bison
Beautiful lake scenery
A fun playground
Picnicking
Easy walks
And simply relaxing in nature on a beautiful day
Of course, wildlife sightings are unpredictable, and it's always good to check the lake conditions on the day of your visit.
But for a light day trip of just a few hours, like ours, it was absolutely wonderful.
Most importantly, my child, who started munching on Five Guys fries from the moment we left home, had a blast all day long...
From a mom's perspective, that alone made it a successful fall outing! 😂❤️
Next time, I'm determined to get that bison photo!
