1. Danyang Gugyeong Market: A Must-Visit in Chungbuk

I recently visited Danyang in Chungbuk province for a 2-day, 1-night trip with my parents and child.
After thoroughly enjoying the breathtaking scenery of Danyang's Eight Scenic Views, we wrapped up our fulfilling and heartwarming Chungbuk journey with a visit to Danyang Market, a true feast for the senses.

As it was a multi-generational trip with three generations, we also wanted to cater to everyone's tastes and pick up a variety of local specialties and snacks to conclude our itinerary.

It was a traditional market brimming with delightful sights and flavors, offering a variety of Danyang delicacies made with the local specialty, six-clove garlic.
Danyang Gugyeong Market holds the history of Old Danyang being submerged and New Danyang's relocation due to the construction of Chungju Dam in 1985. It's a significant traditional market that has preserved the livelihoods of its merchants amidst significant regional changes.

I'll guide you through the location, parking, diverse culinary delights, and picturesque views of Gugyeong Market, a top destination in Danyang, Chungbuk.
2. Location and Parking

Danyang Gugyeong Market is conveniently connected to the Danyang Danuri Aquarium and a lovely riverside promenade along the Namhangang River, making it easy to visit as part of your itinerary before or after your market stroll.
Situated in the heart of the region, the market is just about a 10-minute drive from major attractions like Gosu Cave, Mancheonha Skywalk, Moss Tunnel, Dodam Sambong, and Cafe San. Its excellent accessibility from any tourist spot makes it perfect for planning a scenic drive.

From the parking lot, you're treated to beautiful river and mountain views, and you can easily access the market alley directly via a riverside elevator or stairs, making it convenient for everyone, regardless of age, to move around comfortably.
3. Recommended Danyang Market Delicacies

During my trip to Chungbuk, I found so many garlic-themed restaurants in Danyang it almost made me laugh!

I heard that this area is ideal for growing garlic, thanks to its well-drained loess soil over limestone bedrock and significant daily temperature fluctuations.

This six-clove garlic, grown under such optimal climate conditions, is firm-textured with large cloves, meaning it doesn't spoil easily even with long-term storage. That's why my mother and I often visit Danyang once or twice a year just to buy garlic!
Thanks to its distinct spicy and sweet flavor, along with its rich allicin content, it truly elevates the taste of any dish.
I felt like I was completely revitalized.
Locally, you can buy them at a better value,
making them perfect for gifts.

Plus, there's the delightful fun of enjoying countless Danyang treats infused with garlic.
Near the entrance, the black garlic bread is
~$4 for 8 pieces (snack size)
For gifts, ~$7 for 15 pieces / ~$11 for 24 pieces
It's delicious and neatly packaged, making it a unique gift.

Right by the entrance, there's a black garlic ice cream made with Sangha Farm milk ice cream
drizzled with black garlic extract. The aged black garlic on top tastes like caramel,
creating a captivating harmony of savory milk flavor with deep, sweet black garlic.
It's ~$4 per serving, and since there are so many other snacks in the market,
it's perfect for two people to share.

There were so many different foods like dakgangjeong (sweet and spicy fried chicken) with garlic, garlic salt bread, and garlic dumplings,
but my absolute favorite among them is garlic tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties).

Within Danyang Market, a must-visit spot in Chungbuk,
there are several famous tteokgalbi restaurants.
I've visited multiple times and tried tteokgalbi from various shops,
and they all tasted pretty similarly delicious!

This time, we visited 'Two Men's Handmade Garlic Tteokgalbi,'
and they generously cut us plenty of samples,
so we could

taste and choose what we liked.

Beyond that, Danyang is also famous for Korean pine mushrooms (chamsongi beoseot), so I bought a box of these firm, rich, and chewy mushrooms that grow in the clean air of the Sobaeksan foothills.
It's a wonderful place to experience a traditional market properly in Danyang, Chungbuk.
If you're exploring Danyang Market, enjoying various snacks, and planning a meal,

there are many highly-rated *Sso-gari Maeuntang* (spicy freshwater fish stew) restaurants nearby,
like the Blue Ribbon acclaimed 'Park Sso-gari' and 'Danyang Freshwater Spicy Sso-gari Stew,'
which are perfect for a family trip.
This Chungbuk destination offers a rich culinary journey, with many famous spots where you can savor a hearty tteokgalbi meal at places like
Dadamsukgalbi and Baekhyangdam, or enjoy wholesome set meals like 'Comfortable Black Garlic Barley Rice' and 'Black Garlic Ssam-bap.'
Plus, there are numerous renowned garlic sundae-guk (blood sausage soup) restaurants!
4. Recommended Signature Foods of Danyang Market

I've introduced you to Danyang Gyeong Market,
where three generations, from parents to children, can all happily enjoy Danyang's food and shopping.

We fully indulged in delicious garlic-infused foods amidst the charming atmosphere of a traditional market,
and since you can also find clothing and fruits, just like in any traditional market, it's a great place to do your grocery shopping too.

True to being genuine tourists, we returned with both hands full of local specialties,
and it truly filled our hearts with satisfaction.
As a popular tourist market attracting many visitors,
Danyang Market in Chungbuk is a Danyang travel destination that welcomes you with abundant culinary delights and warm hospitality.
I hope you all visit Gyeong Market and create plenty of delicious memories!
