Danyang Gugyeong Market: Top Garlic Eats & Savings for 2026

On a recent three-day, two-night trip to Danyang, we found ourselves visiting Danyang Gugyeong Market (단양 구경 시장) twice, drawn back by its incredible array of garlic-infused delights. This market is a true haven for foodies, and I can't wait to share all the delicious things we tried!

We also spotted many vendors selling pine mushrooms (songyi beoseot) throughout the market. It turns out Danyang is known for cultivating these flavorful mushrooms. We even got to sample some fresh pine mushrooms dipped in sesame oil — no other seasoning needed, it was absolutely delicious! Even my 8-year-old son, who can be a picky eater, enjoyed them.

Savory Vegetable Fried Chicken at Oseong Fried Chicken

This is Oseong Fried Chicken (오성통닭), a place highly recommended by friends who had visited Danyang before. While there are many garlic dakgangjeong (sweet and spicy fried chicken) spots in Gugyeong Market, we went straight here for lunch.

Usually, boneless options are slightly more expensive, but here, both bone-in and boneless fried chicken are ₩19,000 (~$14), and both seasoned dakgangjeong options are ₩20,000 (~$15). We paid with our Danyang Love Gift Certificates. The menu is simple, offering only fried chicken and seasoned dakgangjeong.

They offer samples, so we let my son try it first to make sure the seasoning wasn't too strong for him before ordering.

While it's primarily a takeout spot, the dining area isn't huge, but we opted to eat in.

Oseong Fried Chicken mixes whole garlic and green onions into its batter before frying. Freshly fried, it's incredibly crispy and the vegetables add a delightful savory flavor. It reminded me of a chicken I had years ago in Jeju, called Doldam Chicken, which also incorporated vegetables and seafood into the batter. While this one doesn't have seafood, the savory vegetable flavor made the fried chicken itself delicious. The seasoning isn't too strong, so it's a great option for kids too!

Black Garlic Ice Cream: A Gugyeong Market Exclusive

Near Dodam Gate (도담문) at Gugyeong Market, ice cream vendors were actively promoting their unique offerings. My 8-year-old, an ice cream enthusiast, couldn't just walk past!

We always grab a cute Sangha Farm ice cream whenever we visit.

They offer Black Garlic Ice Cream (흑마늘 아이스크림), topped with fermented and aged black garlic, Honey Garlic Ice Cream (꿀마늘 아이스크림), which contains garlic preserved in honey, and even Mugwort Garlic Ice Cream (쑥마늘 아이스크림) — perhaps an ode to the mythical bear-woman Ungnyeo!

Having experienced my parents making black garlic at home, the taste wasn't entirely new to me. However, if it's your first time trying black garlic, you might be a little surprised. In that case, mixing it with the ice cream helps! There's no pungent garlic bite at all, just a soft, chewy texture. It's definitely a healthy flavor, and worth trying at least once!

Next Time: Garlic Sundae Soup & Ssangori Bread

As a big fan of sundae-gukbap (Korean sausage soup), I was really curious about the Garlic Sundae Soup (마늘순대국밥), made with sundae that has minced garlic mixed in. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and couldn't try it, which was a shame. Danyang is also famous for ssangori (mandarin fish) caught in the Namhangang River (남한강), with a whole street dedicated to ssangori spicy fish stew. I'm also curious about Danyang Ssangori Bread (쏘가리빵), which is shaped like the local specialty fish!

Danppang Bakery (단빵제빵소) is one of the hottest spots in Danyang Gugyeong Market for Black Garlic Salt Bread (흑마늘 소금빵) and Garlic Salt Bread (마늘 소금빵). I've actually written a separate post about it before, but these garlic salt breads are delicious and make fantastic gifts.
