Even if the weather is warm, exploring a vibrant market like this is an experience you just can't pass up!
As you wander through Gugeong Market, you'll quickly notice a recurring theme: garlic! Danyang is famous for its garlic, and it makes its way into almost every imaginable dish here.
The best part? Many stalls offer generous samples, making your culinary journey even more enjoyable. My travel companions had all the planning sorted, so my only job was to happily taste everything!
Crispy Old-School Fried Chicken with Whole Garlic Fritters
Oseong Chicken

Oseong Chicken seems to be quite famous, especially near the market entrance. While researching for this post, I discovered their main branch is actually in Jecheon!
We placed our order for chicken here and then continued our stroll around the market. The freshly fried samples were absolutely delicious! It's such a treat to enjoy chicken with fried scallions and whole fried garlic.

We opted for the boneless chicken to take back to our accommodation, but I highly recommend enjoying the fried chicken right there at the market. It loses some of its crispy charm once it cools down, and eating it fresh is truly the best way to experience it.

If you're an alcohol enthusiast who loves to pair local drinks with your travel meals, this is a spot you won't want to miss! Sul Market offers an impressive selection of traditional regional liquors.
With kids in tow, we had to reluctantly pass on most of the tempting options and only grabbed some Makgeolli (Korean rice wine). However, if you're looking for the perfect traditional drink to enjoy with your market haul back at your accommodation, this place is definitely worth a visit!
Daesan Wonjo Garlic Sundae (Blood Sausage)

Indeed, when you come to Danyang, garlic finds its way into almost every dish! We had to try the famous Wonjo Garlic Sundae, which has even been featured on TV.
This is the kind of place where you just want to sit down, relax, and enjoy it as a snack with a drink. I actually envied the locals who were leisurely chatting and enjoying their sundae and gukbap (rice soup) with a shot of soju. But, once again, we packed it up and headed back to our accommodation.
We dipped it in a sauce that was somewhat like gochujang (Korean chili paste) and it was truly delicious. My only regret was that by the time we got the kids settled and the food unpacked, it had cooled down. I highly recommend enjoying this dish fresh at the restaurant!
Thanks to my in-laws, we managed to conquer all the market's best eats!
Kkukkodakbal (Spicy Chicken Feet)

To cap off our Gugeong Market culinary tour, we indulged in Kkukkodakbal, or spicy chicken feet!
As a huge fan of chicken feet, I was thrilled to find such an authentic and delicious rendition in Danyang, especially since there isn't a good chicken feet restaurant near my home. I've often had to settle for dry or burnt delivery versions, but this was a revelation! These chicken feet were moist, chewy, and perfectly spicy – a truly delightful experience after so long. The accompanying nurungji (scorched rice soup) was also a wonderful addition!
A Traveler's Respite for When It's Hot

We also stumbled upon a "Traveler's Rest Stop" at Gugeong Market called Gugeongdang. Honestly, it's a bit unclear whether it's a shop or a genuinely free public rest area, so I can't wholeheartedly recommend it as a definitive free spot.
The first floor looks like a cafe, selling drinks and souvenirs, but the second floor has seating, restrooms, and Wi-Fi, making it seem like a rest area. Both inside and out, it's labeled as a "rest stop."
Due to potential issues with smells and ventilation, you can't eat strong-smelling market foods here, but coffee and other beverages are likely fine. It seemed like a good spot to cool off briefly before moving on, but the presence of the 1st-floor cafe owner made the atmosphere feel a bit… monitored? I'm still not entirely sure of its exact nature. The small door we entered through said "Traveler's Rest Stop," but the larger exit sign read "Customer Rest Stop." So, whether it's a cafe's customer lounge or a general public rest stop remains a mystery!

Although I didn't get any photos, I have to give a shout-out to the Danyang Lotteria—it was surprisingly good! To save time and streamline our travel, we ordered Lotteria delivery to our accommodation. I honestly can't recommend the Danyang branch enough.
I didn't place the order myself, so I'm not entirely sure of the exact branch, but I did spot a Lotteria on the way to Gugeong Market, so it was likely that one. I know what you're thinking, "Fast food on a trip?!" but hear me out!
This was hands down the best Teriyaki Burger (my absolute favorite Lotteria burger) I've had in recent memory. Lately, the Lotteria branches near my home seem to have lost their touch—skimping on sauce and serving cold buns. It's been frustrating! But the Danyang Lotteria, which I ordered with no high expectations, brought back memories of when I could devour 4-5 Teriyaki Burgers in one sitting. I almost shed a tear!
Since I was with my in-laws, I maintained my composure, but it had been ages since I'd enjoyed a hot burger with generous sauce. So, if you're traveling through Danyang and still have a little room for some fast food, definitely give Lotteria a try!

It's best to eat Oseong Tongdak's Dakgangjeong freshly fried on-site. If you take it back to your accommodation, it might cool down and lose some of its flavor, so we recommend eating it right away while it's warm.
We recommend sitting comfortably and eating at Daesan Wonjo Maneul Sundae's dining hall. This is because if you take it out to your accommodation, the sundae might cool down and its flavor could diminish. We suggest enjoying it with Gukbap (rice soup) at the restaurant, just like the local adults do.
Due to odor and ventilation issues, you cannot eat smelly market food purchased from the market at the Gu-gyeongdang Traveler's Rest Area. Only coffee or beverages are allowed, and you can use beverages sold at the cafe on the first floor.
At Danyang Lotteria, the Teriyaki Burger is especially recommended. It is said to have plenty of sauce and is served warm, bringing back the original deliciousness of the Teriyaki Burger that might have been lacking at your usual neighborhood branch.
