Family Trip Review During Typhoon Season & Wet Season

With many holidays falling in September and October this year,
many of you might be planning a family trip to Da Nang around this time.
Last year, I stayed there during the period when a typhoon was passing through,
from September to October.
My flight was even at risk of cancellation back then,
but honestly, typhoons are unpredictable weather phenomena beyond our control.
I arrived right after the typhoon had passed, in late September,
and spent most of my time there enjoying sunny weather.

It was great for swimming, and I even visited Ba Na Hills,
though there were moments when the rain poured down.
Let me share some tips on how to best enjoy your trip during Da Nang's September and October weather, and the wet season.

The Wet Season and Typhoon Season Are Different

Da Nang's wet season typically starts in September,
with rainfall increasing in October.
October is the wettest month in Da Nang,
and typhoons can occur frequently.
In fact, a major typhoon called Bualoi struck central Vietnam around late September last year,
and I arrived right after it had passed.

However, it doesn't rain continuously throughout September and October.
During my stay, I only experienced about 5 rainy days, perhaps?
It was mostly short, heavy downpours that quickly stopped, like tropical squalls.

According to AccuWeather, September's daytime high was around 34 degrees Celsius,
with nighttime lows around 26 degrees Celsius.
During the hottest parts of the day, I mostly swam,
or visited spa massage shops and cafes.

I stayed until early October,
and it still felt distinctly 'hot'.
Even stepping outside for a short while would make me sweat profusely,
so it's perfect for truly experiencing Southeast Asian weather, right? Haha!
However, while it's the wet season, a typhoon is a different matter altogether,
so always make sure to check for flight cancellations or typhoon news.
I personally checked the official airline website frequently,
right up until the day before departure.
Planning a Trip to Ba Na Hills?

During my wet season trip to Da Nang, Vietnam,
one unexpected highlight was Ba Na Hills.
It was raining lightly in the city,
but my local driver assured me it would be fine.

He said that as long as there wasn't a strong typhoon-like wind, the weather up in the mountains
could be different and perfectly fine for exploring.
Being a bit of a skeptic, I was nervous the whole way up,
but I was genuinely surprised when it didn't rain, just as the driver said!

While it was cloudy and not a bright, clear sky,
the slightly misty scenery had its own mysterious charm.
And it was definitely cooler up there!

For Ba Na Hills, I opted for a private tour,
with a driver waiting for me.
Since the weather can be quite unpredictable,
it was a good idea to set a time, enjoy, and then head back down.

That day, we were scheduled to move to our next hotel,
and we could safely store our luggage in the car,
making it perfect for saving time on a hotel transfer day.

What to Wear and Accommodation Tips

September and October are typically warm months,
so short sleeves were perfectly fine for the whole family.
However, Ba Na Hills can get a bit chilly, so you'll want to pack a light shirt or
a windbreaker.

The swimming pool was definitely usable, but
on rainy days, the water felt a bit cool.
It wasn't a freezing cold kind of chill, though, and
even during the rainy season, we absolutely swam on sunny days.

For accommodations in both Hoi An and Da Nang, we prioritized places with swimming pools,
and if you're traveling with kids, it's an absolute must!
Since the weather is hot, even a short swim
helps cool down your body temperature.

The Belle Maison Parosand Hotel, our accommodation near Da Nang's My Khe Beach,
was great for swimming even when it rained.
I booked Belle Maison Parosand through Trip.com,
and here's a price comparison table for 3 people on the same dates.
I wanted to swim with a My Khe Beach view,
and I chose this hotel because I loved the configuration of a king bed and a bunk bed.

If you're planning a family trip to Da Nang in September or October,
it's not a time you absolutely can't go.
However, you should definitely consider the variable of 'typhoons',
and I continuously checked the typhoon's path myself.

On clear days, we enjoyed riding the lantern boats in Hoi An and
exploring the Old Town.
Even though it was the rainy season for our trip to Da Nang and Hoi An,
we still managed to swim and relax quite a bit.

Before you set off, make sure to check the latest typhoon information.
Since it's still quite warm,
it's a great idea to head up Ba Na Hills and enjoy a cool half-day.
If you can, try to book a hotel with a swimming pool
and treat yourself to a delightful 'hocance' (hotel vacation).
