Whenever I visit a new place, a night market is an absolute must-see! So, naturally, arriving in Da Lat meant a trip to the Da Lat Night Market was at the top of my list.
First things first: the crowd. Wow. And just to be clear, this was even before I officially entered the Da Lat Night Market itself!
I'd heard that Da Lat is a popular travel destination for Vietnamese locals, and seeing the hotels packed with domestic tourists certainly confirmed that impression.
You'll even see vendors selling warm fur hats. My initial thought was, "Aren't we in Southeast Asia? Even with the higher altitude, who wears these?" But as I strolled through the Da Lat Night Market, I actually spotted quite a few people sporting them. I even saw some folks in light puffer jackets! While Da Lat's weather isn't exactly freezing, it can get surprisingly chilly, especially in the evenings.
Once I finally made it inside, the crowds were simply immense! Right from the entrance, you'll find countless stalls selling Banh Trang Nuong, often called "Vietnamese pizza."
This is what it looks like, and they whip it up incredibly fast! They sell out almost as quickly as they make them.
I also bought some roasted sweet potatoes because they looked so delicious... but for some reason, they just didn't hit the spot. They tasted completely different from the roasted sweet potatoes I'm used to. I'm not sure if it's a different variety of sweet potato or if I just picked a bad vendor (I suspect it's the former), but either way, I wasn't impressed. And let's be real, one Banh Trang Nuong, while tasty, feels more like a snack than a meal, so I was still hungry!
As you continue further into the market, one side is dedicated to food stalls, while the other sells clothing and other goods. Since I wasn't looking for clothes, I mostly focused on the food section. The crowds, of course, remained relentless!
Eventually, my hunger got the better of me in the food section. I decided it was time to eat first and explore more later. Being both starving and tired, I threw caution to the wind and just picked the very first restaurant I saw! Usually, I'd meticulously scout out all the options before making a decision, but not tonight!
The spot had a truly local vibe, offering a diverse menu.
The main dishes were hotpot and various grilled items. As a huge meat lover, I naturally opted for the grill. I know you shouldn't order when you're ravenous, but I did it anyway! I ordered chicken, beef, and pork – all of them!
I had no idea how much food that would be! The portions for each type of meat were truly generous...
It felt like I was grilling endlessly! I also ordered an egg soup-like appetizer to start.
And here's the salad that came with it. As you might guess from the visuals, the flavors were authentically local. The grilled meat's seasoning wasn't what I was accustomed to either; it was... an unfamiliar taste, perhaps not quite what I was expecting.
I didn't take a picture of it, but on the way back, I bought some yogurt to enjoy at my accommodation. There were two types: a plain yogurt, which was delicious, and another that was half yogurt, half purplish mixture. I expected the purple part to be something like blueberry jam, but it turned out to be... a rice-like consistency. I'm not sure why it's eaten that way, but it wasn't really my style, so I didn't finish it.

You'll find the market easily at this address; it's hard to miss as you wander by. Honestly, because I was so incredibly hungry, I was more focused on eating than soaking in the atmosphere, so I didn't feel a huge sense of excitement. It's also possible that having visited Hanoi Night Market and Sapa Night Market back-to-back right before this trip might have tempered my enthusiasm. There were many stalls selling Banh Trang Nuong right from the entrance of the night market, and they were made quickly upon order. However, one Banh Trang Nuong wasn't enough to fill me up; it felt more like eating a single snack.
The roasted sweet potatoes looked delicious but didn't taste good in reality. Among the two types of yogurt, the regular one was tasty, but the purple, rice-like yogurt wasn't to my liking, so I left it unfinished.
