Booking Your Colosseum Tickets

Including Arena Floor Access

A trip to Rome just isn't complete without visiting the magnificent Colosseum.

When I started looking for tickets, I was overwhelmed by all the options available,

making it hard to decide which one was best.

I ultimately booked the full experience ticket, which included access to the Arena floor.

Here, I'll share my booking process and review of the visit.

1. Colosseum Official Site Booking & Ticket Types

While searching for tickets to Rome's attractions, I found the Colosseum's official website to be remarkably user-friendly.

You can and should book your Colosseum tickets directly through the official site, and it's essential to do so well in advance.

The official ticketing website is at the address below:

That's the correct link, but it sometimes shows 'waiting...' when embedded in blogs.

Once on the official site, navigate to 'INDIVIDUALS' to choose your ticket options. You'll find quite a few!

To visit the Colosseum, you'll need to select from five different ticket types:

There are two basic 24-hour tickets, priced at around ~$19 USD each,

And then three premium options, which include access to the underground, the Arena floor, or the upper levels, respectively.

All five ticket types include entry to both the Colosseum and the Roman Forum archaeological area.

A quick note on how tickets work:

You'll choose a specific entry time for the Colosseum, but you can enter the Roman Forum anytime within your ticket's validity.

Most tickets become available for purchase 30 days in advance. Be aware that all entry times aren't released simultaneously; they open sequentially according to Rome local time.

So, if you want a ticket for an 11:00 AM entry, that specific time slot will only become available 30 days prior at 11:00 AM Rome time.

I opted for the FULL EXPERIENCE TICKET WITH ENTRY TO THE ARENA OF THE COLOSSEUM.

This allowed me to step onto the Arena floor, and I'll delve more into that experience below.

*Note: This specific ticket typically opens one week in advance, not 30 days.

If you're eager to explore the underground, I highly recommend logging on exactly 30 days before your desired visit date to secure those tickets. I hesitated and missed out, which is why I ended up with the Arena ticket instead!

2. Entering the Colosseum

Even with a timed entry ticket, expect to wait in line for a bit. It's a good idea to arrive a little earlier than your scheduled time, and don't forget to bring your passport!

The entry process can be a bit slow due to ticket and ID checks, which sometimes feels less than efficient.

After a security check, follow the signs up the stairs to enter, where you'll first encounter a massive cross.

I paused there for a moment, listening intently to my audio guide. It was incredibly informative!

Instead of a morning city tour, I relied on the audio guide for explanations. I did, however, take a separate night tour to see the city lit up.

To get there, you'll need to have your ticket checked again, as it has a separate entrance.

I paused for a moment at a spot with excellent views of the Arch of Constantine and the Roman Forum, finishing up some audio guide explanations.

Then, I made my way down towards the Arena, getting as close as possible to the underground area. I took photos from the opposite side of the Arena, where the space is narrower and quite crowded! Haha.

If you don't go down into the underground, you can still catch a glimpse of it, similar to what you see in the right-hand photo, and honestly, it's not drastically different from what you see from the Arena.

3. Colosseum Arena Access: Recommended or Not?

From the Arena floor, the view of the underground area isn't vastly different from seeing it from the main viewing levels.

However, the Arena itself offers a much wider space to stand, and you get to experience the Colosseum from a more central, 'stage-like' perspective. This can lead to broader, more encompassing photos.

But I wouldn't say Arena access is an absolute must-do.

So, unless you have a specific desire to see the underground area like I did, I'd recommend booking the standard 24-hour ticket, which covers both the Colosseum and Roman Forum for around ~$19 USD.

While individual visiting times vary, my husband and I spent about 2 hours exploring the Colosseum.

We took our time, listened to the audio guide for detailed explanations, and snapped plenty of photos, which added to our visit duration.

You could probably rush through in about an hour without the explanations, but honestly...

The true essence of the Colosseum lies in understanding the Roman architectural genius, and without that context, you might as well just view it from the outside.

After our tour, we headed to a fantastic photo spot and took many pictures. I highly recommend this location!
